I just love that there's more options for Sony shooters when it comes to these super telephoto lenses.
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
I so, so agree!! Huge number of options now at so many different budgets. Now I want to see a few more super telephoto primes that don't break the bank and I am hopeful Sigma will come out with those soon.

Great review, and I do like the original #1 reason for tuning in! Owning the 200-600, not sure I would get this as well, but if I didn't have that Sony lens, this would be an attractive lens. But a real bummer on the short lens foot. Tony & Chelsea showed how it won't even balance on a gimbal head when zoomed out to 600mm

HA - thanks Mark. Yes I think for 200-600 users this is a pass but for someone looking to add additional range it is compelling. They did a good job overall.

I generally like the content of these videos, but the choice to use loud highly compressed "music" several times the intensity of the speaking is not only distracting, but actually annoying.
@photorectoby

I am sorry. I didn't think the music was that much louder.

Please re-edit this! It’s really terrible…. I do appreciate the quality of your content after the heartbeat skipping inducing noise right at the start. I really had to amp my AVR down for the neighbors early in the morning at 8 AM on a Saturday morning. Not everybody is listening through tiny speakers.

That range would have been great on the Katmai trip. Hope we might see it on the X-mount in the future.

Sigma has made some lenses for x mount so it is certainly possible.

I love this review and your humor! I will wait a bit...but love the idea of just 2 lenses.

Thanks for this review, as always Toby! This looks like a great option with the range, 60mm would be nice compared to Sony's 200-600! Definitely something to think about if I didn't already have the Sony.

I’m curious how this lens would perform on a Canon R5 when compared to the Sony? Specifically autofocus being that you need to use an adapter on the Canon.
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
The older Canon/Nikon mount version of this lens has been out for awhile and as I was researching it seems people are pretty happy with the results using it with an adapter on Canon mirrorless. I haven't tried it myself so I can't say - I am always a little nervous about 3rd party lenses, especially ones where fast af is so important and on an adapter. Could always rent and see how it does for you.

Thanks for the insights, really informative. My dilemma in considering this is the weight, this cannot be a travel lense that does it all since it may be difficult to hang it all day and a serious attention grabber too. Own a 20 and a 35-150 hence whether to go for a 150-600 or 100-400 is my doubt, am a daily photographer not a wildlife or an enthusiastic bird photographer. The tamron 18-400 is also on my radar
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
No denying that the 18-400 is going to be the most travel friendly choice of the three but grabbing Sigma's 100-400 gives you only a little overlap and a very good lens for general travel photography. If you are not doing any real wildlife or birds I don't think you need more than 400 so skip the 150-600.

If they can make a 60-600 with apertures this wide, how cool the 150-500 (tamron) and 150-600 (sigma) cant be wider than f5? And the tamron has to be f6.7.. at the almost same physical external size. Feels like they should have been able to be f4.5 too then. And no more than f6.3
@paololarocca7684
@paololarocca7684 Год назад
very compelling option but the fact that Sony does't allow teleconverters on third party lenses in annoying....also the new tamron 50-400 for me is even slightly more compelling for the lower weight ... and price, but they are both new great additions....

Sooooo… technically 10x zoom has been around on Sony E-mount for a long time already. The not-super-but-not-terrible 24-240mm exists. It would be cool if Sigma also produced something like a 20-50mm lens, that would be an amazing companion lens to this 60-600mm.
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
Yes but the way Sigma gets to say this is the first is using the term "Ultra-Telephoto" And you do Have Tamron with their 24-40 f/2.8 and rumors that Sony is bringing something similar to market soon. Those would be great pairings.

Good content. Just the audio between voice and intro is way off. Intro is either too loud or voice too low. Just my opinion though.

PLEASE READ- SAVE SOME BUCKS!!!: Several commenters have stated the price of 105mm filters being prohibitive. Simple solution is buy (or may already own) a 95mm CPL, ND...whichever! Then purchase an inexpensive 105mm-95mm step-down ring, screw your 95mm filter onto it and screw that combo onto the front of your 60-600 OR 150-600mm Sport and there you have it! No vignetting whatsoever at any focal length/aperture setting. I even have the Sigma 105mm Protector filter on the front of this lens, then the 95mm combo and still NO VIGNETTING!
