Pancake lenses are treated as the golden standard for VR. You don't get the golden standard of VR for $299.

My plan is getting the quest 3s and sharing it with my brother, pass down the quest 2 to my younger sister and then save up to get the quest 3 myself

Quest 2 actually launched with 64GB, I was one of the early adopters.

That said, I have watched a few of your most recent videos this week and i feel like you are spot on with it. The pace, the insight and content. imho does the Q3S make little sense. The current Q3 (smallest storage) didn't even had enough space to have Asgard's Wrath installed. So why would I want to have a HMD with even less storage? (and also less features). For PCVR? Valve did exactly the opposite by increasing features and moving completely to PCVR. So it is exactly the opposite of Q3S (also in terms of price). I doubt there are many casual gamers that would buy Q3S just to try VR without having set expectations. One of the main pluses of Quest HMD is the big store, which will become of quite limited use with Q3S, or who will un-/install all the time because there is not enough space for more than 1-3 games?! Q3S is most 'useful' for standalone AR. Except it loses a couple of Q3 features that would improve the experience. So that's also not the target consumer group. I have heard of people buying used Q3 headsets. I guess their price is in the range of Q3S, just with full features. And let's not forget the Q3(S) are at about the tech level (from consumer pov) of two years ago when Pico 4 was released. Something like Q3S I would had expected last year but not this year. Unfortunately all other HMD releases this year were more or the less disappointing. My last hope is Google/Samsung/Qualcomm to move the market forward. Meta, Apple, Sony... all plan to release HMD with lower specs. That's the oppisite of progress. Other vendors (Valve, Pimax) think PCVR users only sit in a chair connected by finger thick cables. The only good release was Pico 4 Ultra. Just too bad they didn't add some tweaks like increased FOV, resolution or OLED instead of LCD.

The BIG news from all this imo is the price drop for a 512GB Quest 3. Logically a $100 increase for more storage "&" the better lenses/form factor makes me wonder why anyone would be stupid enough to go with a Quest 3s 🤷‍♂️

I only have the 64 GB quest 2 but I don't use it that much in standalone. So I don't care if I'm waiting for a VR headset with pancake lenses on a $299.99 USD. So i don't need to upgrade. Would be nice for there was a thing like a quest 3s+ that has pancake lenses starting at 399.99 for 128 gb

Even though Fresnel lens aren't as good as pancake, pancake lens are really expensive, and they need a much brighter screen, so its not like its an easy decision to make to add them in.

Bluetooth is gross. No thanks. Hardwired is the only way.

The shape brings me back to the Oculus go times Anyway i'm happy they went with a quest 3s and not a new quest since many of us have the Quest 3, the Quest 2 took a while to be surpassed from another meta headset (the quest pro doesn't count), so i hope the quest 3 will last a while before the Quest 4 arrives

This gonna be the definitive headset, especially at the price. I can't wait to grab one with the Batman game with it. But I'm mostly all in with mixed reality 😁

04:45 Good vid, but this is not entirely true. There will be an upgrade in visuals due to hardware if going from Q2 to Q3s when playing titles that can run on both machines. Ab-so-lutely. The Quest 2 doesn't run any game even near it's actual screen-resolution (neither does Q3 - there's a LOT of headroom there, but that's besides the point). If you play a game on Q2 that also has a Q3 version and you play it on the latter, it'll look much better and still run at a higher resolution than the Q2 version simply due to having more horsepower. You must've noticed this when running Q2 games on Q3 when it just launched and there weren't any real Quest 3 patches out yet - it ran better and looked better due to the game running at higher framerates and resolution. The fact that the screen of the Q3 has a higher resolution, at that point, did nothing else outside of further minimising the screendoor effect. I'm willing to bet a lot the fact that it'll still look better due to running higher resolutions (and framerates) since it can run the Q3 versions of games. Bit of a ramble, but I hope you get what I'm saying.

I just wish I had a smaller, lighter Quest 2 with better lenses whats the deal with the headphone jack removal!?! that kills rhythm games unless you use the built in speakers or have an adaptor

Can't say exactly why, but the quality of your content/videos has improved significantly since last year or so. Probably the structure.. nevertheless nice job. 👏Must have been an exhausting couple of weeks with all the events in the XR industry. Wish you the best for your future endeavors. :)

There really wasn't anything at all for VR at this years Connect. I was really disappointed that they didn't show any R&D for a VR headset with a similar compact form factor like Orion. They have all the tech and knowledge to do it, such a missed opportunity to not show anything like previous years. Surely the current chunky generation of Quests isn't what we're still going to have in 5-10 years time?

Easy.. Companies have teamed up and picked up parts of outdated technology and assembled glasses. You can imagine how many such parts are left that they don't sell.

I dunno, I paid 1500 for the FE Immersed Visor (the main thing i do with my Quest 2 is work.. though some PCVR) I'm having trouble justifying the weight of Meta and Apple's offerings

Meta should offer VR HMD’s without the controllers at a lower price. That way Quest w users can upgrade for less by bringing their old controllers

Question would it be possible for 3rd party companies to make pancake lenses that can adapt for quest 3s? (I am sure this may remove the value proposition and the extra money can just be spent on quest 3)

So if I want to buy the original Quest 3, I must wait until October 15th to see the price reduction for the 512 Gb model?

I would add to this list Microsoft Flight Simulator and Megaton Rainfall.

Since Meta dropped the price of the Quest 3 I think consumers should go for that instead of the inferior 3S. Will be interesting to see what happens. I also realized the 3 charging prongs are not present on the Quest 3S so u would have to plug and unplug the USBC port and I hate doing that. Just a big NO to the 3S

Stop buying Fresnel headsets, people. You'll thank me later. The Quest 3 is on sale so often in the US, those few extra dollars are worth it. Please don't start with outdated technologies. I'm telling you this from the heart as a VR enthusiast.

She doesn't seem to understand the consumer at all. Meta played this perfect. the quest 2 gained HUGE popularity due to the price. 299....then 199 that's crazy! The only upgrade I really want is performance and Passthough AR from my quest 2. This is the PERFECT mix.

3:24 - The lack of compatibility actually works against you in that statement as if Meta keeps holding games back generationally that then also affects Batman (Rat Time) because if that game doesn't sell well enough it for sure won't be kept compatible to Quest 4 if it isn't possible with players or many other reasons Meta uses to justify not supporting on later hardware like those other great Quest 2 games that didn't make it to Quest 3/3S.

Meh... I thought we moved past the toaster strapped to your head form factor... i don't like anything about quest 3s . and we don't care about games anymore . i care about metaverses where users can bring their own content ...

The biggest feature, pancake lenses has been left out.... this make the whole package worth a big zero! People who do not know about this will freak out when they learn that they have been cheated out of the biggest feature of a quest 3 line of product.

I have the same soft strap that came with my Quest 3, and I think all the complaints about its discomfort and such a grossly over exaggerated. And, honestly, after using the Bobo head strap on my Quest 2 for so long, I actually think the strap that comes in the box with Quest 3 is just far simpler and less hassle and in some ways actually more comfortable to be honest.

Whew. Glad I got my 512GB Quest 3 on eBay with the official case for $560 earlier this year. I would be FURIOUS if I paid full price.

Feel like the Quest 3S price could've been a little lower since they are still using older lens tech, that in theory they already had the production lines still available from the Quest 2 days for those Fresnel lenses $300 is still a bit high compared to some older game consoles, $200 Gamecube ($100 GBA), $250 Wii ($150 DS Phat), $300 Wii U, $300 Switch ($200 Switch Lite, $130 2DS, $130 DS Lite), other console prices were usually much less 'reasonable' by comparison.

Yeah sure. So meta sold the quest 2 up until a few months ago. At like £300. The quest 2 is now obsolete effectively. Don't ever trust meta. The headset won't sell like the quest 2 did. The reason being quest 1 and 2 owners got burned. The quest 2 should have been £100 max last year.

Essentially just MR camera is the main uograde. Rest is passable and low quality. Same bad colors worse clarity no eye tracking, horrible comfort bad FOV

Pretty disappointed with Quest 3S. The quest 3 gets twice the storage and pancake lenses for only $100 more than the 256 GB Quest 3S. There's no way in 2024 I am buying any headset with less than 512 GB storage and fresnel lenses. What a step back!

I think going forward on a budget, the 3S would be the headset to get, but upgrading from the Quest 2 is not really needed unless you want the exclusives and mixed reality with color passthrough. I imagine it's not worth it for the visuals. It's not easy to reach that price point, so I understand fresnel lenses.

Sounds like the 3S is a side grade, not an upgrade from the quest 2. But the Quest 3 selling for $499 is awesome.

Why would a Quest 2 user 'upgrade'? It wouldn't even be an upgrade considering the significantly lower resolution display. And it doesn't even have pancake lenses either. The Quest 3S doesn't exist for anyone. It's just Meta following the toxic scheme that many other companies have been following. Instead of dropping the price so that more people can get it, they instead release a lower end model to justify not dropping the price of the high-end unit. The problem here is that VR just isn't a very established market yet, so this price model just doesn't work. To sell VR they should be working to drop the price of the main unit as much as possible. The high price resulted in lower-than-expected sales for the Q3 and now they're coming out with an overpriced half-assed version that isn't even as good as the Q2 in most ways, but is still costs more isn't the answer. If people want a Quest device that is cheaper, they'll get a Q2 instead. The Q3S is just redundant. Honestly it is pretty frustrating and disappointing to see major companies ruining every opportunity they have to expand the VR market. Sony failed as well with the PSVR2. Should've worked hard to drop that price, but nope they're delusional and think most people are willing to buy it, despite sales saying otherwise. And the Pico 4 Ultra same thing... they canned the 5 which was looking to be great and instead came out with a P4U that's way overpriced for what it is and doesn't provide any incentive to upgrade into for existing P4 users, since the users for most part just won't be willing to pay more than they did for the original P4, but 2 years later and with a marginal-at-best upgrade.

Quest 3 being superior hardware for superior games is over exaggerated. This is still a mobile hardware and games like Hitman Reloaded prove that. Quest is not for high end games. For that you get psvr2
