The beaming man in the hat that the footage keeps cutting to is none other than W.C. Handy himself, FYI!

I attended several classical music concerts at Lewisohn Stadium in my early teens. I remember the sprawling cement venue as if in a vanished dream. I entered CCNY when I was 25 and never realized it had been the home of that fabled stadium.

Fond memories: As a freshman on the junior varsity fencing trmeam at CCNY in 1963-4, I used to train by running up and down the seating area of Lewisohn Stadium.

Louis Armstrong--God came down and played jazz trumpet. Edmond Hall--not far behind as a soloist.

This was a concert featuring first the Dave Brubeck Quartet and then the Armstrong All Stars. CBS was filming a documentary (Satchmo the Great) and for that purpose there was an "Added Attraction" of Bernstein and the Stadium Symphony playing just this, cameras at the ready. The hardest worker was Alfredo Antonini, who wrote this arrangement.

The 24 bar solo Pops has is one of his best. The way this man was able personalize and add expressions to get each note to sound the way he pleased is a element of his composition skills not many talk about. It’s not just the notes he played, it’s how he played them. This solo, short and sweet, is a perfect example of how to build a solo to a climax.Satchmo was a master of this.
