Some said it in other comments, there are code violations in some these "tricks". Examples include messing with the volume of an electrical outlet box, tinning electrical connections, and not properly fitting PVC piping (this is dependent on what the pipe is for, e.g. fresh water, waste water, or air). The purpose of the any code is to prevent fire and health issues over the life span of the building.

At the 7:41 mark, the box wrench used to torque the screwdriver is the one I would use the most. I have always used a crescent wrench on the square part of the shaft on slotted screwdriver but since the Phillips screwdrivers I use have a round shaft the crescent wrench would not work on the shaft but your box wrench idea would work.

Pretty sure soldering splices in a wiring box (4:08), at least in the US, is a pretty bad code violation. Use wire nuts or Wago style connectors for this.
@TwistedPersona
@TwistedPersona 2 года назад
@Anthony Boyette @Anthony Boyette keep in mind this is coming from a non-electrician, but I would think the solder artificially increases the diameter of the cluster. I could see the wires becoming loose in the wire nut if the solder were to melt. Wago connectors are intended for a single lead per terminal, so that would flat not work. I believe NEC specifies that any hardware must be used per manufacturer's specification, but I can't remember where it said that. Beyond all of that, a soldered connection would make it a bit harder to replace a bad switch or outlet down the road.

That’s why you just cut a block a bit larger than your hanger and use as a guide, (+1/4”). Don’t need to move the whole joist to make a mark. Also, joist hangers don’t need to be super tight the joist, loads being carried down not horizontally.

Alot of this was horrible. I would definitely get yelled at by my boss doing crap, time and material wasting like this. Alot of it is very simple. Like the tape to get the rounded edge of the flooring. I 6 in length of tape is enough, or a paper and pen lol. Not wasting 20 peices of tap and 20 min to get 1 cut.

And the guy with a wrench and screw driver lol. Most screw drivers have a spot on the center where handle meets metal to hold a wrench, being made for a wrench so you can still hold the handle. The guy had his thumb over the spot so couldnt tell if his screw driver had a spot for a wrench.

The "trick" at 3:08 absolutely will not work. If you have ever built a deck and bothered to measure the joists you will find that they all vary in height by quite a bit. Nail in the joists, flush on top, then come back and add your joist hangers.
@udavidism
@udavidism 3 года назад
@@sirmixalot3332 Yes, you are not supposed to put screws in joist hangers but that was not my point. You cannot install joist hangers in advance because every joist is a different height, some will be too low and others will stick up too high.

@sirmixalot3332
@sirmixalot3332 3 года назад
Udavidism I was not ‘correcting’ you. I wasnt directing my comment towards you but to those who may not know any better. I was simply emphasizing to use appropriate nails rather than screws. Your comment was accurate but the importance of using proper nails will be missed by the less experienced. Having a flat surface without a lot of height variance is important but building something that wont catastrophicly fail is more important imo. Isaiah- screws have little shear strength compared to proper sized nails. Screws are hard, so the heads do not strip, but also brittle. Nails are malleable being of a softer material and will not fail the shear forces inherently present in joist hangers. A lot of collective weight is being supported by those hangers only factoring the weight of the building itself (dead load). Once there are people and weather added to that (snow, ice, etc., aka ‘live load’) the demand or weight expressed on those hangers has risen exponentially. Decks and roofs can fail for many different reasons this being one of those reasons. Not just any nail or hanger will suffice. First of all those nails ought to be galvanized to prevent deterioration and of adequate size. Don’t go using 6d nails for example. 8d-10d tiko nails to joist and rim board with 16d toenails thru common joist into rim joist/rim board/beam is often typical. The nail holes/placement is already established on the hanger. The hangers should also be of adequate size in relation to joist height. Easy enough to verify through Simpson. When 15 people are hanging out on that deck for a bbq those screws will likely fail. Just my 2¢
@udavidism
@udavidism 3 года назад
@@Isaiahroetcisoender All joist hangers and any metal hardware designed to reinforce joints or connections must be nailed in every hole by joist hanger nails made specifically for that job. Joist hanger nails are required by building codes and inspectors will look for them.
