Great hunt. Way off topic here: I have a 40 farm in upstate NY with a mix of ag and hw. 8-10 yrs ago after the corn was harvested in late September, food was the limiting factor in all of the surrounding area. Food plots were planted and attracted many deer to my property. Fast forward to today, with advancement of of farming techniques with cover crops and field rotations into clover and other green fields, food doesn't appear to be limited. My property provides great cover in the middle and in the upland areas in the hills. However, on the bottom creek land of the property is a well managed 2 acre food plot that is very hard to hunt and basically a square opening that doesn't really attract mature bucks. My thought is to convert this back to natural habitat next spring for a five year trial. I believe this will create more movement and a sense of security for mature deer. We cannot burn in NY, other than letting it go wild, what all else would you suggest. A friend advised me to plant it in corn and just let it go for the next five years. Thought being the stalks would provide a bit of a backbone and the native grasses would take over in the next couple of years. Would planting fescue grass or other grasses at the co-op be beneficial? Any advise would be great!
