I ran for 10 years,quitting in 95. I wish I had taken up hang-gliding,but living on the prairies,I had no significant hills or coastline to fly from. Maybe in my next life...
You can aerotow hang gliders with a tug plane, get up to altitude, release and free fly. There's also surface towing from a winch or platform launching behind a pickup truck. Paragliders and hang gliders fly all the time in flat areas like Florida and Texas.
