This is the speed test of Chinese Outboard Hangkai 3.5 HP on my 14ft jon boat. The boat + everything inside the boat (including me) is about 450 lbs.
The motor can push the boat about 6mph max when there is no current.

That stalling is the motor momentarily seizing due to excessive friction and heat.

Off is the choke. once the motor is running switch to the ON position to add air and turn choke off . !!!!! Read directions bud !!!! Your not supposed to give it full throttle until your done your one hour break in runs for a total of 10 hours then switch oil to 50-1.

take the propeller off and put grease inside the gearbox and it wont shut off and it will not overheat

With these motors you must put gear oil 90w where the prop is. It’s a good idea to upgrade the spark plug. And make sure the exhaust/pisser gasket is aligned.

I have one of these motors coming in the mail tomorrow. Already have a new CJ8 spark plug, new fuel lines, gear oil, and some other extra little parts on hand. After I check the water pisser, and the gas cap vent, hopefully this thing will serve me for a while.

@@Bowhunter88 It's really not worth the headache, The original one had problems so the seller I purchased it from sent me another one for free. The new one had problems as well, So I reviewed a full refund. I took the good parts from both motors and rebuilt 1 to be in good running condition. I actually just fired it up the other day, started after 3 pulls, had been sitting untouched for 4 months. There are 4 stroke motors on eBay similar to this one in size and price, I'd go for one of those.

@@timkaczmarowski8151no, he is off a bit. He is running that with a lot of weight and drag on a bigger boat. I have that same motor and average 6mph all day. Also mine has never overheated that way. He may be ignored the break in procedures. If your old 1.5hp is doing better than 4mph I would have to see that to believe it.

There is no way this engine is even close to 3.5hp. I would be very surprised if it put out 2hp, and I’m not exaggerating. The actual performance of these engines suggests its actual power output at the prop is likely close to 1.5hp.

I was gifted this motor; have you used one personally to compare? I'm trying to decide if switching to the Suzuki, Tohatsu or Honda would be a significant upgrade or not.

@@vonnnov I decided upon a Minn Kota Endura Max 55 lbs. I thought Gas was a good option, but the Hang Kai is poor and weak, and a Touhatsi or Suzuki or Honda are all expensive, like $1000. I figure the trolling motor and a 100 AH battery should be more than enough, plus it can power a poor man's live well and running lights if you're out at dark. Haven't gotten it yet, so I can't report on it.

I bought a Florida outboards 2.5 HP 2 stroke this past summer and am very pleased with it. When I go out it is always with a rented 14" al boat and one of my sons for a total weight of 450 # for me and my passenger + 150 for the boat, anchors and gear so 600 lbs. total. We take it on lakes between 250 and 1800 acres. In the five times we had it out this past summer it kept getting a little faster each time and by Oct. it was doing 4.1 to 4.4 mph with this load depending on waves and wind measured by GPS. I have a 20 sec. video to show if anyone is interested. The 18 lb. weight is what I like best.

I discovered Florida Outboards recently. I'd saw their 2hp Honda outboard with the air cooled Honda gs35 engine. Checking other sources I found that the gs35 puts out only 1.2hp in reality according to the specs. For $600, and having an Unknown lower unit, certainly not a honda though, and being but 1.2 hp, I kept looking. The other engines, as well as the lower units, were from a company that I wasn't able to research(Bridgestone/Mitsubishi?) nor find reviews about. Fearing in might be chinese, I passed. I hope that you have had nothing but good luck with your engine. Did your motor last ? How about posting a review perhaps ? I did like your post, very informative. btw, I did buy a 2021 3.5 Mercury, days ago, despite reading hundreds of dreadful reviews. Haven't tried it on my Pelican Scorpio yet.

If you only found out about the choke thing being reversed, then you just ran the motor for the first time and haven't even broke it in yet so everything isn't seated

Before 10 hours the motor starting to break. Lol ... This motor was acting from the very beginning that I receive it. After using Mercury 5hp, I realized that hangkai was not made for long lasting

That’s interesting because I had a Tanaka 3hp 2stroke on my 12 ft and I could hit about 8mph or like 15 downstream on the Ohio river on a good day... loud as hell though

I actually have me one of those same motors and got it last year. I only took it out a couple times to get some fine-tuning into it. I wish I had the owners manual though, but the thing seems to be a little beast and taking it out tomorrow see what it does,

Good video. It seemed to me, that the rpm's never did get too high though. Didn't sound the like 4000rpm's or better that some engines run at.

Bruce R I have sold this motor for $100, the motor was too loud, rough, oil leak and hard to start. Too much trouble ... I ended up with a used mercury 5hp now, and I'm very happy with it. If you are thinking to getting one of this motor, I will recommend you to get a used American/Japanese outboard instead.

I almost bought one of those Chinese outboards for my 2005 Alumacraft 1436-LT Jon boat. I ended up buying a new/unused 2012 Mercury (Tohatsu) 6hp 4-stroke outboard at a government auction for just under $600 in late 2015. The Mercury has been perfect on the Jon boat and sips fuel...
