Hank Williams' First Recordings (Aug./Sept. 1938)-Fan It / Alexander's Ragtime Band

In 2010, an old friend of Hank Williams, and former local Alabama DJ, "Uncle" Bob Helton rediscovered an acteate recording he made in his kitchen, of Hank, months after Hank formed his first set of The Drifting Cowboys at the age of 14. While many the world over know of his country songs, Hank was more influenced, as a child, by the blues music he heard on the Montgomery streets, along with whatever songs became popular on the radio and in movies. In this case, Hank chose first to record a double-entendre Blues song called "Fan It", originally made popular by Blues singer Frankie "Half-Pint" Jaxon and recently, at the time, regained popularity via western swing groups like Milton Brown and His Musical Brownies. For the other side, Hank recorded an old popular song called "Alexander's Ragtime Band", which regained popularity from a Bing Crosby movie, of said title, that was released in 1938. This video is a culmination of both sides of the acetate record. These rare recordings are available, separate, on Time Life's 3-CD set, Hank Williams: The Legend Begins. Enjoy!

Hank was the best and will never be replaced..he suffered all his life with his back condition from birth, that probably drove him to drinking. So young and talented to pass onto Heaven. Hope my Mom and Dad have front seats up in Heaven where he is performing.

I tuned a lady's piano in Garland , Alabama in the mid-1980's. She had a photograph of the singing class that she taught when Hank was just a little kid. He was in the photo. She could say that she taught Hank Williams how to sing. Move over Rufus Payne. Ha ha. (Her daughter has the photograph now. The last I heard she was living in Evergreen, Alabama.) Piano tuning took me to wonderful places.

I think its just great as it is......much of the power of scratchy recordings is that they are the real deal......no electronic wizardry coming between the performer and his audience..............look up the story of Joe Meek a man who used his kitchen and bathroom as studios to record some of the biggest hits in music history including "Telstar"......today's "Country Music" is smooth, bland and charmless with zero soul....real music died a long time ago. Its great to hear how it was again....

And to everyone who thinks Hank was just a country singer... no, he was an entertainer. He sang mainly country songs, but listen closely and you will hear, blues, jazz, folk and whatever else was popular in his time. Hank liked to listen to Dixieland jazz - Don Helms said so in interviews, and he listened to anything that was popular on the radio too. He was an entertainer who mainly sang country music but wasn't afraid to sing other genres too when he felt like it. That is why he outstripped the likes of Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, and all the other big country music names of the 1950s - he went beyond country and gave the people what they really wanted to hear. :-)

"While many the world over know of his country songs, Hank was more influenced, as a child, by the blues music he heard on the Montgomery streets" Tell me about it. I never got into this guy until last year when i got Spotify and the first thing that struck me after listening to a bunch of his songs is he was more a blues musician than a country one. All the songs about being lonesome, or women leaving him, even a song about suicide by throwing himself in a river, that's hardcore blues man. Don't get me wrong, he wrote a lot of great country standards, but to me he leaned more towards blues.

I read where Hank apparently went through a lot of guitars. Evidently girls always flocked to him. So when their boyfriend came up wanting to fight him, he'd just wack them on the head with the guitar and leave. I think that's hilarious... 🤣

Williams knew what he wanted to do from a very early age. Although his family wasn't dirt poor (father Lon worked for the railroad; his mother Lillie ran a boardinghouse), Hank performed wherever he could. He sold peanuts, too.

Yeah. Strangely, since you've mentioned it, as much as Hank worshipped Roy Acuff at the time, he didn't chose any of Roy's songs as his first to record. Still, he didn't make a bad choice. I was lucky to have ran across an original 78 of "Fan It" by Frankie "Half-Pint" Jaxon for dirt cheap (two dollars) a few months ago. Hank either heard it on the Montgomery streets, or from Western Swing artist Milton Brown on radio, as the original is very different.

That's the way the records was back then. The old 78 3/8 inch thickness to them. They were great to listen too. My mom had them and a wind up Victoria too I use to listen to Hank and opera on it mom had others but those 2 was my favorite one plus Mozart too she on on 78 speed records don't have none to day brother broke it all up in to pieces it still worked too mom came home and was mad as a hornet at him and daddy. So that ended that. Then I got a old record player from a lady I worked for and it had the 78 speed on it so I was back hearing my records as I called them. After I left home they was put in the attic the brother got the house he tore it down and took everything to the dump I guess I never got anything from mom and dad's house. But that is ok he has to pay for it in the long run because he knows he did me wrong along with 2 other sisters. They are gone now too but he is still kicking I guess I haven't seen or heard from him since our brother passed in 2007 haven spoke to him. But these old songs bring back memories of long ago for me some happy and some not so happy but God granted me this time on earth to live in peace and joy as much as we can now days. So that's what I'm trying to do.
