I remember watching this movie over and over again and I love this scene. Allen reached his zenith as a filmmaker with this one. It's just one great scene after the next. No wasted moments or fillers. It should have swept the Oscars, but Allen's dissent for Hollywood probably prevented him from running the table.

"Where did April come up with that stuff about Adolph Loos and terms like organic form? Well, naturally. She went to Brandeis. But I don't think she knows what she's talking about." As a Brandeis alum, I can assure Holly that we don't know what we're talking about.

Been thinking about this scene a lot since she passed away. So sad. I remember when this came out and how I was impressed with her in this small but memorable performance.

". . . and take an extra Seconal." The man knows how to write a script, and this is film may be his finest. What a career.

Saw this move when I was 29 in 1986. Left Baltimore and moved to Manhatten. Best move ever. (of course it was).

00:24 to 00:27 Carrie Fisher, in character as April, mentions being in Come Back Little Sheba. Meanwhile, in real life, she actually was in Come Back Little Sheba (1977) with Olivier and Joanne Woodward. [Also on You Tube.]

Carrie is great but Diane steals this scene!

She did win best supporting actress.

Diane indeed steals the scene. Carrie Fisher is barely there. According to Sheila Weller's biography, CF's role in "Hannah" was originally much bigger, and Woody Allen had to cut most of her performance (and tweak the plot of the film) because CF was so obviously high in most of her scenes. What there is of Carrie is good, though. Sam Waterston is perfect as the douche canoe who has both women competing for his attention.

Waterston really waited for his moment before getting the catbird seat on Law & Order, but he had alot of work in Allen movies: the boyfriend in "Interiors," the suitor in "September," architect here, Rabbi in "Crimes & Misdemeanors."

For me his most complete movie, my favourite scene of all time is a small scene in this movie when Barbara Hershey is perfection personified .she realises that her affair with Michael Caine is cooling off as the autumn chill sets in as the water laps on the wooden sleeper. , with background music to match her feelings,woody perfectly catches her thoughts and mood as the sun sets on everything around her maybe it's just me but I think it's a brilliant scene

Yeah I agree. There are a couple scenes at that pier, bookending April’s affair with Caine’s character. Time is a major theme of this film (Annie Hall too), with each Thanksgiving reminding the viewer of the inexorable passage of time, and how time alone can transform a fresh relationship into something stale and dead, seemingly all by itself. Change just happens to all of us, whether we like it or not. Allen’s own character is the perfect comic foil to all this human drama.

"What are your favorite buildings, David?" I know April's not supposed to be all that likable, but when I was in university I took some tips from her about how to talk to men (and they worked :\)
@lemorab1

Holly comes across as needy and April doesn't. That gives April the edge with David. All three actors were perfect. Diane Wiest deserved that Oscar. This same actress played the Broadway Diva who dominated everyone in "Bullets over Broadway" not too many years later.

Content searchable about Carrie Fisher: There's also a clip of Carrie Fisher singing as April auditioning on You Tube. Woody Allen Pages website has a few links connected to Carrie Fisher in memoriam. Carrie Fisher has an interview about Hannah and Her Sisters on You Tube. Lastly, in print for Town and Country interviewed by Sarah Paulson, Carrie Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, cites Hannah and Her Sisters as a favorite piece of film of Carrie's. Sarah Paulson agreed. Carrie Fisher also agreed about the great work done by Diane Wiest.

Woody Allen, Kevin Smith, and Quentin Tarantino all have the same quality where they depict people in a way where I'm not sure if they are just tapped into a sub-culture that I am completely unexposed to or if they are writing themselves into every character in their movies. Like why does everyone in a Tarantino movie ramble on about bullshit, why does everyone in a Woody Allen movie know about opera and Cole Porter and random ass old people shit that no working class young woman in the 80s would have known or gave a fuck about?
@pruthvish007
@pruthvish007 3 года назад
Many of the Woody Allen characters are high-society New Yorkers coming from ivy-league schools or rich families. I would imagine talking about opera, classical music, philosophical concepts, foreign cinema, etc is quite common among those folks. Working class girl from small mid-west town wouldn't care about such stuff but the girls catering in such parties would be trying to blend in and would love this sort of attention.

@@pruthvish007 tjat makes a lot of sense. I first found out about Nabokov from Allen's movie Manhattan. I reckon though that today, not a lot of high society types even know about the "random ass old shit" as mentioned above. Today's random ass old shit was just the contemporary way of life of the 60s onward
