The University Council has elected to bestow this honour on Hannah Gadsby for her outstanding work of as an international ambassador for the lives of all LGBTIQ+ people world-wide, and her profound impact on contemporary popular culture, especially given her Tasmanian upbringing and the unique interweaving of Tasmania into her work and stories.
In 1998 Ms Hannah Gadsby studied at the University of Tasmania. She is now an internationally renowned comedian, actor, and ‘closet art scholar.’ Her ground-breaking stand-up show, Nanette, ran for 18 months through 2017 and 2018 to sold-out houses across Australia and in London, Edinburgh, New York and Los Angeles. It won the 2017 Best Comedy Show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and, when it was launched on Netflix in June 2018, became the most widely discussed comedy special in years. In it, Gadsby deconstructs stand-up comedy from the inside out, while simultaneously shining an unflinching light upon homophobia, sexism, violence, and misogyny - all pertaining to her own lived experience.
Analyses and commentary on the show and on the impact Gadsby had and continues to have on informing national and international conversations on such matters have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Slate, The New Republic, The Guardian and Rolling Stone, among others. Truly Hannah Gadsby can be described as an international ambassador for the lives of all LGBTIQ+ people world-wide. But of crucial importance for Gadsby’s work is the fact that she was born in Smithton and grew up in regional Tasmania. Never does she let her audience forget that she is Tasmanian while she single-handedly changes the art form that is comedy, to enact a profound impact on contemporary popular culture.
In 2014 ABC TV aired a three-part series called Hannah Gadsby’s Oz. Drawing on her studies in art history, in this series Gadsby travelled across Australia “on a mission to debunk the myths of the Australian identity as defined by Australian art.” She was in search of a more inclusive national identity, which proved elusive. Nonetheless, along the way Gadsby gently yet incisively revealed to the viewers, in her words, “a dream Oz; a forgery made up of myth and ignorance.”
In all her work, Hannah is intent on helping to humanise the human race, which means helping all of us to acknowledge painful truths while never giving up on the possibility of healing - and whether that healing comes from laughter or from anger is an open question.
By the authority vested in my office, I admit you to the degree of Doctor of Literature honoris causa.

Her book "Ten Steps to Nanette" is a masterpiece of thought provoking stories all leading to her dramatic show "Nanette". Who she is, how she came to write "Nanette" and how it sits in Australia and particularly Tasmania's story is all woven through the astonishing way she sees, feels, hears and breathes. An absolutely compelling read.

That is THE most inspiring speech i have ever heard. As a person who is healing from lifetime of trauma, I relate to Hanna’s desire to be kind. I have often had my trauma spill out at the worst moments and I have struggled with my therapist on how to deal with so much. But by asking myself who I want to be… prompts thinking that allows me to consider all options in the moment. Takes me away from where I am now, and affords me the ability to consider being kind to myself. Bloody hell!!! This is life changing. I’m 52, had 5 intensive years of therapy and have made good and steady progress, but I think Hannah might have just given me the most useful tool I could ever have hoped for. If you ever read this Hannah, THANK YOU. thanks you soooooo very much. Yes, alive people can write good too. 😂🥰😂🥰

Blew me away…..I’m 56…20 years ago I said to my partner as we were having that ‘ on my gravestone I want written convo…….’ ……..She was kind…. The roller coaster ride of Nanette took me to the edge…and then gently brought me back……..this speech is inspiring and normalising(subjectively speaking), and as powerful as Minchins. ”10 life lessons’(word porn). In fact more so, with dignity and humanity, Hannah forges the path for one way… inclusivism (did I just make up that word?) yet ‘inclusivity’ doesn’t seem to cut it

I wish I heard this when I was 17- not 57! Trauma has shaped and destroyed me over and over, healing has come late and I carry so much pain and regret. I just try to make everyone I meet feel like they are in a bubble of happiness, and it is working wonders! .

Hannah's voice is one that we need to hear, and what she says is both deeply meaningful, and tolerant - or kind, as she might put it - at the same time. My wife just finished reading Nanette, and we have been close watchers of Hannah Gadsby for a number of years now. Long may she hold the stage!

Thank you, Hannah. This is such a thoughtful speech that I am now going to share it with many friends. I'm in the LGBTIQ+ community, as well as a woman, as well as a Christian (with a great deal of skepticism), as well as a former academic. With all of this, your speech resonated in me in many ways, including the trauma of rejection and the quest to find out who I want to be. In fact, the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting unemployment have forced me to face the question you raise, and for that I am grateful. Thank you, thank you. You are a brave, honest, thoughtful, open, and brilliant woman, and I am grateful for you.

"Too often those that used the most violent language were given a bigger platform than they deserved. And that's how homophobia was politicized and weaponized in Tasmania. And it was a trick. The trick being the harvesting of hate amongst a depressed, low socioeconomic demographic who were already struggling against intergenerational poverty, welfare dependency and a criminally low literacy level. And instead of making legitimate investments in the northwest what was whipped up was a vulnerable community into a frenzy against a marginalized community within that community, manufacturing as it happened an artificial identity of proud homophobia." wow

My favorite Renaissance Woman! Being that she’s THE one and only Renaissance Woman. Where has the RW series gone? I want more … WE want more. If only old Mrs. Weaver, who called us people, had even been slightly similar to Hannah. One class she addressed us as “people” 28 times in 45 minutes. As in, “People, this is a painting by ZzhOhtoh, who painted Hannah Gadsby’s favorite nativity scene … “ Ah, if only Mrs. Weaver had been even a tiny bit like Ms. Gadsby.

Brilliant! Only those of us who live outside of the norm seem able to see the the chains creating by norming. We are all more enriched by all who are different. Which actually means everyone. But not everyone has been pressed to find their unique expression in the world -- that which only they can contribute. And many have struggled to express their uniqueness, and the world has been dimmer for it. Let this be the generation who helps turn that around . . .
