I remember seeing this in the theaters. The moment when Hannibal first speaks to Clarice got a very loud and audible collective gasp out of the audience. That's how you know you've got yourself an iconic villain.

I read that in the end of the book, Hannibal and Clarice became lovers and disappeared together. So glad they left that part out of the movie! I feel like it would’ve taken Clarice completely out of character. Yes, she and Lecter formed an unlikely bond, but I think she still has enough morals not to run off with a cannibalistic serial killer.

Ryan O I think it would have been better if they just had one moment of affection and then he fled. It would ruin the character of Clarice if she did fall for him.

Actually, Lecter used drugs to fuck with her head until she basically came out all Stockholmed up if I remember correctly. So it doesn't 'ruin' Starlings character. It just makes Lecter an even more despicable character though it's always hard not to reserve some respect for his manners and class. Frankly I enjoyed the book more than the film. It was rather impactful and telling to me. Part of the reason I enjoyed the series to begin with is that Lecter is equal parts disgusting and classy and it makes for a hell of an internal conundrum for a reader who only feels one way or the other about him depending on the situation. It makes for strong character contrast. I prefered the book's ending because it brings us back to the realization that he is a cold calculated sociopath instead of this wierd "oh he's not so bad" bullshit which you feel stupid for having forced on you in an unmeasured and unrealistic way. The book seems more consistent with it. But meh what do I know.

I like that starling learns something from Lecter. The smell was a great idea. Also I like the brain eating part. Think about it, if you ended it with Lecter saving starling that's kind of lame. I feel the brain eating still shows that Lecter is still Lecter and he isn't the hero that saves starling.
@Brutalyte616
@Brutalyte616 6 лет назад
I will say the film has a more 'realistic' ending, or as realistic as Lecter choosing to cut off his own hand instead of Starling's can be considered to be, but I've always found the novel to be more endearing, and there's at least some justification for it. There's a progressive build-up over the course of the story with Starling getting fed up with all the bullshit going on in her life, particularly regarding her career, and she's obviously developed a fixation with Lecter in her attempts to catch him. There was also the matter of Lecter using a combination of hypnotism, psychology, and drugs to warp her mind for the rather esoteric purpose of turning her into a replacement for his sister, and _that_ was why she was so amiable towards becoming his lover, though it's not expressly stated that she joined in on any killings he may or may not have committed; she might have just accepted it as a quirk of Lecter's, or she could have reined in his murderous tendencies to some extent. Call me a sucker for crazy couples if you want, because I totally am, but I still find it to be the better ending because of how plausible the plot twist actually is.
@Brutalyte616
@Brutalyte616 5 лет назад
@Digicraftmon the Crystal Gem Never, because she cut off Lecter's manipulation and managed to exploit his own vulnerabilities, breaking down the metaphorical wall between them. Lecter no longer feels the need to manipulate her any more than a teasing spouse, and Starling is so sick of everyone else's bullshit that she considers being in a relationship with Lecter preferable to her old life. What cements this is the scene at the end of the book where Barney is at an opera(I think...) with his girlfriend(again, I think...) months after the fact, where he sees both Starling and Lecter in the audience, who recognize him and wave at him. Barney then promptly shits his pants and tells his lady friend they could use a new place to live sooner rather than later.

Great review. I agree with most of it, but strongly disagree with a few things. I sort of agree with the cry at the beginning. They made the mistake of casting Julianne Moore, whose known for her hysterical crying and freaking out. She shouldn't play a character like clarice. But then again, she just had to rinse a mothers blood off of a screaming baby's face. I'd say her crying might even be a sign of growth. Because starling's greatest fear in the first book/film was being ordinary. She played the doe eyed southern bell cause she needed to, but she was secretly obsessed with being stronger and more successful than everyone else. Btw. This film has problems but Anthony Hopkins is fucking untouchable. This is a man who played a goofy cliche in that stupid Thor movie and made me feel like I'm watching Lawrence of Arabia. Even in his roles in terrible films (and there are very few) he knows how to enthrall an audience.

I’m struggling to find it, but I remember seeing a behind-the-scenes video of how difficult it was to get the boars to look ferocious while eating the men, or rather gelatin-skinned mannequins with food on them. They just kept nibbling it off. They decided to stuff them with food to get a more tearing and thrashing kind of eating, but it looked more like they were playing with a toy. This was years ago and I cannot find the source for it (I think it was an Animal Planet series about stunts animals do in movies and television) but it’s amusing to me how they edit and adapt to make a scene work with animals as the main focus. If anyone knows about this, help me out so I don’t look more like an idiot.

The Silence Of The Lambs was a great film in its own right. Great characters, compelling story and great filming. Hannibal although being somewhat predictable was still enjoyable and memorable in its own right. Hannibal Rising was bland and silly. And the Hannibal TV series was compelling and shocking enough to end the legacy of Hannibal Lecter in a satisfying end.

I actually love the book. It isn't my favourite of the main trilogy of the books but I do really love it. I think that the movie is very 50/50. Like any Ridley Scott movie, the film looks gorgeous and is shot incredibly well. I love the score by Hans Zimmer I think it was. I even like Hopkins in the movie despite the fact he's definitely not as great as he was in The Silence Of The Lambs. I love Gary Oldman as Mason Verger, though I think the character was definitely handled better in the book and arguably the TV show. Oldman gave a slimy, despicable, if at times a little comical performance. I find the absence of certain characters (mainly Jack Crawford) and storylines from the book to be detrimental to the movie. Another problem I have with the movie is the recasting of Jodie Foster with Julianne Moor. Jodie Foster was irreplaceable in the role of Clarice Starling, so I suppose Julianne Moor is the best choice and she does a decent job of filling in for Foster. Though it does take me out of the movie, as it feels like I'm watching Julianne Moor, not Clarice Starling. Also the end of the movie, it's mediocre and clichéd. And that's coming from someone who loves the book.
@DeadManSinging1

Foster didn't return because she thought the book was awful and that the ending ruined her character - And she was right. It was the same reason the director didn't return either.

The tv show does the best Verger. Michael Pitt is fantastic in the role. He steals the show in the 4 scant episodes he's in before he left/they replaced him. He's still completely weird and out of left field, but I believe that he could be a real person instead of just a cartoon cut-out villain.

I'm curious why didn't you review the television show as well. I'd be quite interested in hearing your thoughts. Thank you for your consideration. 😀
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 7 лет назад
Well I still want to look at the tv show, but it was simply just the case that 3 season of a tv show would take take me a hell of a long time complete, But i will say that although its perhaps sacrilege, I prefer Mikkelsen's version of lecter over Hopkins although they are distinct and different enough that comparison is irrelevant.
@krychickspp2745
@krychickspp2745 7 лет назад
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I was thinking now that the show's been cancelled for two years if you'd maybe do one video concerning the series overall, definitely less work than reviewing 39 episodes, to be sure. I must say, I enjoyed Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal more than that of Anthony Hopkins, sacrilege as it may be, though that may simply be because while I'm a great fan of Hopkins in general, I'm also fan of Mikkelsen outside of his role as Lecter, and we were afforded a deeper look into his mind over a much longer period of time than we were in the films. Thanks again for the reply and keep up the good work. 😀

10:20 In "Silence" Lecter kills Miggs because he had been "rude" towards Starling. So the idea that he has a thing for manners and all that wasn't added in Hannibal. He has always been characterized as a highly sophisticated man who could effortlessly mingle with highly cultured people. You could also argue that killing someone doesn't have the same meaning to Lecter as eating someone. Thus, Hannibal's actions should probably be viewed and analyzed individually. For instance: Hannibal casually dispatches the pickpocket in Florence because he's an imminent threat to him. No drama, no theatrics, just a quick, precise stab to the leg. He talks Miggs into killing himself to punish him for rudeness (and to amuse himself I guess) and - in the book - he uses Krendler in a bizarre form of therapy intended to "cure" Starling (or to further traumatize her ... depending on your viewpoint). He also kills Pazzi not just because he has become a threat, but also to show off his own knowledge of Florentine history and probably because he couldn't resist the potential for "historic irony" in this particular manner of killing him.

Now I remembered why I didn't like the movie. The ending with the kid. That didn't need to be there, he doesn't have anything against children. I did however like how Hannibal didn't kill the other guy like we all wanted to because it shows how little he cared about him that he was willing to let somebody else do it and he'll take the credit and then to further add insult to injury, Hannibal turns his back to him before anything happened to him. That I liked, very subtle.

Granted I haven't read the novel, but I feel the book's ending was better. Not everything ends with a happy ending and there are a lot of experiences that can change a person overall throughout the years. In regards to the actual film, the problem may have been hiring Ridley Scott versus the director of Silence of the Lambs, or just another competent director in general. I'm not too big of an expert, but hearing Ridley Scott directing something like this didn't really sound like a good idea even on paper.

XD As for the movie, I heard it had faceless over-the-top Gary Oldman as the bad guy, and thought it would be stupid and hilarious. Then I watched it... and it was just boring and stupid. I kind of did a double take when I ended up loving this story line when the TV show did its spin on it.

I doubt you'll see this on an older video but...the 4 course instrument behind you in the video, banjo? or 4 course mandolin? or you know bass? It's been driving me nuts the whole time because I have a modified neapolitan mandolin with an almost identical tuning set. ( I play a single strung mandolin; I have ligament damage in my hand that made double courses incredibly painful.) Anyway thanks in advance, and thanks for your channel, I don't sleep a lot and your reviews have been a real sanity saver.

The instruments are a bass guitar and a banjo it might just look weird because they were sitting on the same stand one in front of the other, also i see all new comments it doesn't matter how old the video is so don't worry about that, thanks for watching I really appreciate your support.

For those who don't know, the big screen Mason Verger was played by the brilliant British actor Gary Oldman.

I actually quite love this sequel and disagree with many of your points. Could discuss them in another post. Also, it shows how a film can be better than the source material.

Barney living a middle class lifestyle is smart. Remember he's still an employee at an asylum which probably doesn't pay a lot. If Barney started spending lavishly people would start snooping around his finances. And could possibly be fired from the place he's stealing the items from hence his side hustle would be ruined

The Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane was closed by the time of the film's events. I don't recall if it's explicit in the film, but it's in the book and there's a deleted scene where Clarice visits it in its abandoned state. So he could easily take Mason's money and live good.

They should have just adapted the ending. There's multiple things that feel like they're building to it, so to drop it makes the whole thing feel like it just copped out and leaves some storylines left deflated.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I find the film to be a celebration to Lecter's character. It may not have been as thought provoking as Lambs were, nontheless it was captivating to watch. The scenery and ambiance nicely contrasts the gruesomness which is delightful. It's quite different from Lambs but not necessarily to its detriment. It's less analytic and more impulsive I guess you can say. Anyway, I enjoy your work a lot. Insightful stuff, keep it up :)

I read the book Hannibal before seeing the movie. I was hoping they would change the movie so it didn't end with Mr and Mrs Lets Murder People walking off into the sunset. But after I saw the movie I had managed to forget the ending to the book, but I remembered it at the 24:50 mark of the review though (That didn't really matter though as the review would have made me remember eventually). However the world still has a lot of alcohol and drugs left so here's to forgetting the book's ending for a second time lol.

Just a point that you seem to be missing on the Lector killing the rude. It was never stated that he doesnt KILL the normal people but that he will only EAT the rude. So yes he will indeed kill whoever gets in his way but he will only set up and eat people that particularly irritate his sensibilites

Yes...the added scene from the original, where he bites the nurses face, was so unnecessary, and done poorly. His pulse wasn't supposed to go above 85, yet, they have him being restrained by 2 men, chopping his teeth wildly, while make amplified growling sounds....lmao. Too many call back for a 2000s sequel, thats the crap they do nowadays.

You said the only way a person is taken off the FBI 10 Most Wanted List is if they are caught or have been confirmed as being killed. There is a third condition you were not aware of. The FBI and the U.S. Marshalls remove a person from the list when said individual reaches the age of 99.

Many years ago I was employed at a call center that took care of orders for a company called Stonewall Kitchen; we were told by the company owners/presidents a secret we were not supposed to tell anyone. The skillets used in the brain cooking scene was purchased from their company. The wooden box they came in had to be hidden so the logo was not shown. Of course, there was juicier secrets about Martha Stewart's attitude and behavior but I always thought this was was more interesting. Wanted to share :)

I think you're missing the subtle plot point there are two protagonists/antagonists pair's Hannibal/Mason Clarice/Ray Liota Mason was infatuated with Hannibal approach him sexually and was left physically scared so he's out for revenge,Ray Liota's character approach Clarice sexually and was emotional scared from it and that's why takes chance he can get even with her and the reason why she's responsible by default she was in charge as the special agent in charge she would been held accountable because as leader she would get part blame/accolade for all the officers there dickhead or not so the premise of how she got the mark to start the movie is legitimate.I think you may not had payed attention do to your bias about the book,plus the movie did a shit job at conveying the characters motives
