RIP Hannu the man that made an Audi fly

I am ashamed of how little I knew of him outside his last name and his Quattro. Learned a lot from DirtFish about him and I'm grateful they took the time. Thanks for sharing memories of this Legendary Gentleman.

Apart from witnessing Hannu at full chat through many forest stages, my abiding memory of the man comes from the 1986 Welsh International rally when I stood at the stage start in Hafren forest and the news had come through about Henri Toivenen's death in Corsica. It obviously affected Hannu deeply, as he stood by the car and talked with Arne Hertz the emotion was there for all to see. He went on to win the event in the legendary Quattro but his humanity showed that here was a true legend, a gentleman. The world has lost a true great.

Well done on a lovely tribute to a great man and rally driver. I met him briefly on the Scottish where I was helping as a volunteer, as I walked passed him and a group of others I tripped and fell, (looking at them not where I was going) he was the only one who moved to help me up. This concern for others was evident throughout his life.

Saw him and walter rohle blast through Clumber park in their Quattro S1 e2's and it is a experience that I will never forget, beyond incredible 🤔👍❤

He was one of the greatest rallye driver´s in the history! I was lucky to met him during the Eifel Rallye Festival! Rest In Peace Mister Audi 😢

Me and my wife we were at Goodwood a few years ago, and Hannu was there. He just got out the car and came up to us, and signed something for my wife. Someone nearby said "I have just seen someone rolling down Goodwood Hill in a rally car!" and Hannu just turned around to them like "That was me!" No emotions, just straight. My wife she had to laugh, but he didn't mind. He was really a gentleman and we will miss you Hannu rest in peace!

My memories of Hannu must be in the forests of Wales with the Escorts during the mid to late 70s. He was a true genius behind the wheel, which I am pleased to say I witnessed many times. RIP Hannu Mikkola World champion 🏆 A nice tribute thanks for sharing

He was the first rally driver that I was aware of, and possibly the first driver I ever saw in competition as my first event as a spectator was the 1983 RAC Rally and I think he was first car through. Tremendous driver and definitely a legend. RIP.

For me, He was simply the greatest Rally driver of all time, others may have won more titles but he was a class act all round, so many huge names around on the scene in his career and he stands above them all for me. Rip Hannu, king of the Lombard Rac.

One of my memories was Hannu with the iconic Eaton Yale Escort RS1800 on the RAC but that was before I was lucky enough to watch Hannu several times in the 80's on the RAC amazing driver especially his Quattro years - RIP Hannu a true gentleman

I’m old enough to have seen him in Africa during the Bandana Rallye in Ivory Coast with the Mercedes 500.... Two drivers, Mikkola and Waldegard.... 2 masters. Mikkola was the fastest of them, king of improvisation. Later I saw him in Monte Carlo in St Bonnet le Froid with the Audi Quattro S1. The Gentleman and the Beast! RIP Champion!!!!

I marshalled.on the Lombard RAC rally in the Late 1970s ,this guy was very much at the top of his profession ,in the RS1800 Escort . Then later in the early 1980s with Audi . RIP the Great One .

I did tech in the Olympus in 1985. I don't remember if Hannu was there, but it was the best days of FIA pro Rally, and that was because of Drivers such as Hannu.
