My review of the Hanwei Hutton sabre (casiberia.com/p.... Generally speaking it's a good sword for the price. It works well for 19th century British military sabre and makes a decent light weight substitute for a broadsword or backsword if you're looking for something cheap to use. The blade move well and is relatively bouting safe, though the shell is going to need frequent repairs. Also make sure you buy from somewhere with a decent returns policy because they are prone to breaking sometimes.

I would be interested to see what kind of cut a sharp version of one of these lighter sabre's could deliver

I like my Regenyei Matt Easton sabre. Peter was happy to shorten it for me by a couple of inches, making it a close match in terms of handling to the 1846 naval officers sabre in my collection, although the grip is shaped a bit differently, being less rounded and slightly longer than the original to accommodate gloves. The rolled tip and folded edges on the guard (which make it stiffer) seem to address the issues that the Hutton sabre has. It is a bit stiffer in the blade though so that should be kept in mind when giving point.

You seem to dislike the cheaper basket-hilted sword? What do you think of the hanwei basket-hilted broadsword?

Too heavy and rather poorly balanced, and not really worth getting. You're far better off either getting a hanwei Hutton sabre if you're on a tight budget or buying from darkwood armoury (www.darkwoodarmory.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_6) if you can afford a little something extra.

Tim Is Green Would you say the darkwood armoury basket-hilts have significantly better weight, balance and are strong and durable enough that the extra is worth it? I'm afraid to invest that amount in a sword to be used in free sparring.

They are certainly better in terms of weight and balance than anything else I've encountered. Also they are modular and pommels can be screwed on and off to perfect balance. Durability wise I have seen some problems, though most Darkwood broadsword I encountered have lasted many years.
