A look at how to fence with the bayonet from one of Alfred Hutton's earlier works on swordplay, along with a brief discussion of militarism in the period. Great for military enthusiast, historians and steampunk adventurers.
The Matt Easton video I mentioned can be found at • Highlanders with cold ...
Transcript for the treaties can be found at www.fioredeiliberi.org/topics/..., on the scholar gladiatoria website.

Love bayonet fencing, pls do some more advanced movies in the subject. Have to say that the lower left block seems so useless because you just bring the point up to your face.

Great video! May I ask what's the fundamental difference between bayonet and spear with similar length? Can this system be used on both systems interchangeably?? If people fight bayonets using spear or polearm treatises, would it be ineffective??

The japanese art of jukendo (bayonet fencing) developed from a combination of sojutsu (spear art) and western bayonet methods [mostly French bayonet fencing]. So in essence it is safe to assume that yes, with the added benefit of also using it like a club!

How many different types of manuals do they have for European style fencing? Are there a main group of works that have more following? I want to get into this but do not know where to start
@SwordAndWaistcoat

+BrownBessOwner The number of manuals depends on the period. Certainly by the 19th century though there is no shortage of manuals. I'd recommend Swordsman: A manual of defence against an uncivilised enemy by Alfred Hutton (www.naval-military-press.com/swordsman-a-manual-of-fence-and-the-defence-against-an-uncivilised-enemy.html) as a starting point. There's also a really good list of manuals at www.fioredeiliberi.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=ab7c74fa2a87238733522ea3897d432b. Are you interested in a specific weapon, period or culture?

Tim Is Green Good question but i'm a total green horn to European bayonet fencing. I don't know what weapons, periods, or cultures there are to choose from.

Just keep in mind that being a good fencer will make learning other systems much easier to pick up. If you start with one system and then discover another that you prefer switching will not be hampered. Cultures wise you're looking at modern nations for most of the period of bayonet fencing. Gear wise you want a pretty standard HEMA kit for protection (histfenc.com/). For the weapon you can make a fencing musket if you're crafty and have the tools, or you can buy a Mokuju (www.woodenswords.com/Mokuju_Bayonet_Trainer_65_3_166cm_p/bayonet-65.3.htm) although they are not as good. If you're a brown bess fan then you could always start with a system from the 1800's British military and go from there. In this case Hutton is a great place to start (www.fioredeiliberi.org/topics/sources/bayonetfencing_swordpractice-Hutton_1882.doc).

bayonet fencing looks interesting, but one mayor problem I face is the impossibility of getting a proper training rifle, how can I do it myself one?
@BioBanshee
@BioBanshee 7 лет назад
There are training and simple plywood "rifles" on sites like Amazon. Otherwise, you can probably build one from plywood.
@tatumergo3931
@tatumergo3931 Месяц назад
For God's sake not from plywood.... try poplar or japanese oak instead! You could always buy a japanese jukendo bayonet stick from Tozendo and then modified it for a spring bayonet. Purple heart also use to make one, I don't know if they still do.

Paul Reck The bayonets are Epee blades, they're made using this method ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SgEKkZFzDso.html

+Tim Is Green He has since made a follow up video where he recants using the eppe blade. he says it bends weird, especially from parrys from the other blade. He recommends using a rapier blade. Have you had the same issue with the blade? Why not use a fencing foil blade?
@SwordAndWaistcoat
@SwordAndWaistcoat 8 лет назад
Foil blades are too thin and light to really work. I don't parr with the blade much but I have noticed it flexing and blows come through with the epee blades. Would certainly agree that rapier blades or similar are better.

Mid to late 19th century? Considering that Cpt. Alfred Hutton was a veteran of the Crimean war and first Boer war, or at least was serving during that period. It would suggest that on average in the different European armies of the time, it was correct for the size. About the height of the average man.
