Special requested video of how to play "Happy Birthday"- the most requested song in history- 100 ways. Here's my personal first 10 ways, starting with the most simple to more complex. Only 90 ways more to go. With your help, I'll add more ways to the list, and maybe reach 100 before "I check out" (this of course is just a joke). If you're reading this and it's your birthday today, this is dedicated to you! Score available here: www.kenthewitt....

It's awesome to see all the techniques you've been teaching applied to a single tune. I think this is a great way to get out of ruts where one plays a song the same way every time. I am going to challenge myself to do this with other tunes as well.

If one is playing the I - IV - V chords than the melody is a rare phenomena in that it doesn't end on the one. But if you think of it in of it's numbers it's way more confusing - it's 112143, 112154, 1186432, b7, b7, 6454. See it ends on the 4. Theoretically it's 556598 etc. And those 5's are underscored so it's below the tonic if you're thinking if it in its key that is determined by it's resolution to this. Anyway I use this song to teach but use the I-IV-V and have been looking for someone to talk with about this
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 6 лет назад
The opening phrase is 556587 starting on the 5th of the tonic chord and ending on the 3rd of the dominant chord. It does use the I-IV-V chords. Most melodies end on the tonic chord and tonic note. Check out my video on ear training for beginners for better understanding.

Ken...Great idea covering the world's most popular tune and btw, you are doing great work with your piano videos. I learn so much from them. I especially loved the "5. Jazz Reharmonization w/Rootless upper Extensions version". Beautiful voicings...perhaps a more 'reflective' B'day LOVE IT!!. How "bout an "Erroll Garner" version? I bet you must have that one already.
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 7 лет назад
Thanks, Gene. I appreciate your taking the time to watch and comment. I love Erroll Garner, like Monk... trying to imitate them sometimes sounds "lame", or contrived. But I have played Garner concepts on certain tunes and I enjoy that style. If you want to know who did the best "imitation" of Garner ...check out George Shearing...also one of my favorites. So I will put your suggestion on the list.

Hi Kent - Here's an idea for some new variations for playing Happy Birthday. First let me say that last year I saw Bella Fleck and the Flecktones holiday show at the Fairfield University Quick Center. They played the 12 days of Christmas with each day in a different key and time signature. It was amazing! So with that said, perhaps you could play Happy Birthday in a variety of time signatures for each of your existing 10 style variations? 10 styles x 10 time sigs will give you an even 100.

Right...I'm just applying same ideas to any song I would play...however, this is challenging because the song is simple...and we don't want to come off too ostentatious.

Amazing voicings -- wish I knew some of them... I know a few, but not THAT many. How long have you been playing? Is that Ahmad Jamal doing your intro?
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 7 лет назад
That's my trio playing Ahmad Jamal's version of Music, Music, Music. I've been playing as long as I can remember...but I can't remember that long ago.

greetings from nepal. i was wondering if the esoteric mode goes with the barry harris thing where a chord is leading to different resolutions. :) hope the horses come back!! i really enjoy your style of teaching
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 7 лет назад
Thanks about the horses...they always come home! Approach chords are often tritone substitutes or diminished chords which are more about what Barry is talking about. I'll have to break down that part of the lesson for you at sometime in the future. Thanks for the encouragement!

Would you please explain how to practice speed in 1/4 note, triplet and 1/8,1/16 note or maybe 1/32 for improvisation in swing feel and also special trick in arpegio like Chick Korea does or Herbie Hancock does for example...thank you !

I may do that if enough people request it. I'm glad you did. I just have to come up with more ideas. do you have any?
@ErGoyoTV
@ErGoyoTV 7 лет назад
So nice. Maybe stride is becoming a lost art... but you really flow in it (version 7 at 8:35). Were 100 respective transcripts also part of the original request? I hope not.

@KentHewittpiano88 7 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. The 100 part is sort of a comic view on the subject...not to be taken seriously...however it has resulted in a plethora of suggestions ...so I guess that's a good thing! I'm glad you guys are helping me out...seriously!

Dear Kent Is it possible to buy this arrangement?
@maesyoutube
@maesyoutube 7 лет назад
maybe you could do something like a jazz waltz happy birthday (which could be hard to fit the melody in ;) I think that may be cool.
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 7 лет назад
John, thanks! Yes it's a good suggestion because a bright jazz waltz rhythmically would stretch one bar into 2 or elongate the melody line.

Kent, I really enjoy your videos. I had an idea for a version. Why not try a Ragtime version of Happy Birthday. I've been trying to play a Ragtime arrangement of it since I was 8, I'm almost 19 now, and I still can't figure one out. Keep doing what you're doing, amazing arrangements and lessons!

Very beautiful....just some small errors in the score..in no 4..the first 2 chords have F as the melody..it should be C . And one chord should be D/ Eb not D/F.
