Ray should be recognized globally for his performance, energy, bass tone, and overall influence on the band's sound. A total killer on bass, in the same league as C. Squire, Greg Lake, Mont Campbell among other giants.
as an innovator and composers, RS should be mentioned with Jaco .anyone know why he preferred the P over the J? The music certainly warranted the latter
Happy Birthday Ray and RIP. We miss you so much. You were a true Giant and a brilliant musician and song writer. God bless you and your brothers and band mates always.
Sorry, just tapping a "thumbs up" button here ain't enough. This man has had a profound influence on my life. And I'm a keyboard player. Happiest of and healthiest of all birthdays, sir!
Damn, just got the news that Ray has passed away. A GG fanboy from back in the day, it was my pleasure to meet Ray when he was working on video games and I was with QSound Labs. An absolute sweetheart of a guy, just as you'd expect, and obviously a monster talent. RIP Ray, we won't forget.
everyone leaves sooner or later, but precious few can leave us a legacy as profound, subtle and powerful as Ray has done. rest in peace, you elegant monster.
RIP Ray Shulman, what terrible terrible news. Such an incredible musician- bass, violin, trumpet, guitar, vocals... what a blow to the world of music, he will be missed.
Underrated imo. He's definitely up there with Geddy and Squire.....maybe even more. Never saw Squire or Geddy pick up a violin or trumpet to play/finish a tune.
Much under-rated, as was the rest I’d the band. One of the best bassists ever. Very few real rivals as a complete multi-skilled musician. Happy birthday Ray!
Some of the greatest concerts I've ever seen were GG shows...and Ray's incredible bass sound always came through better than almost anyone else I saw. Great multi-instrumentalist and singer in one of the greatest bands of all time. Oh to have a time machine and see Ray and the boys again at the Shrine in L.A. circa 1977. Happy BD, Ray!
Rest In Peace, Ray Shulman. We have the recordings that show what a wonderful musician you were. Thanks for the joy that you brought to us all. Long live Gentle Giant! God speed Ray.
A most Happy Birthday to you Ray Shulman. You are a bass playing wizard - not to mention a very talented multi instrumentalist. Your approach to bass is very unique and very tasty. I have learned several of your licks over the years. Just wonderful stuff. Happy Birthday and Happy Life to you.
His music has made me very happy for some time so much that it has really hurt me that he is no longer with us but I will always remember him with a bass, playing a violin and singing at the same time... 😢❤️
Happy Birthday, Sir! The joy you and Gentle Giant brought me in the 70s and beyond cannot be expressed! Saw GG in Toronto back then. Day after the show I ran into Kerry browsing records at Sam the Record Man - what a thrill!
Incredible: Bass, Violin, Trumpet, Acoustic guitar, Bass drum!, and Vocals. Ray is one in a few million. Rest in Peace, Ray....you've really left your mark on the history of music.
Happy birthday Ray, and many happy returns! You had a great influence on my life; I made my living with a Fender bass for almost 30 years. And played more than a dozen other instruments besides.. I'm really glad you're still around and hope your life is going better than mine is...
Happy birthday Ray..What you have achieved in music in incredible. Your bass lines are so original.. Saw you in Basel in 77, was very impressed... 45 years after, I'm a lot more impressed ! You still are my main influence on bass. Thank you !
Happy Birthday indeed.....and the world has as yet not seen anything like "Gentle giant" ever again......50 (!!!!) years on......Wow....what talent....
I don't think it's OTT to say Ray was one of the greatest virtuoso multi instrumentalist exponents of the last 50 years in progressive music his talent shines through those GG recordings like a beacon of light illuminating the 1970s through the decades of also-ran pretenders we see lauded these days , RIP Ray you left your mark !
Happy Birthday! You're the Man! Thanks for everything. Still listen to you guys at least once every couple of weeks or so. That's more than everyone but Radiohead. Sounding, not looking still the same after all these years - changing only in My memories not clear, One final thing. The song "Three Friends" on the album "Three Friends" is still the most beautiful music that I've ever heard. I've listened to it more than any song other song, and I still can't believe how perfect that it is.
Happy Birthday Ray! And Thank You for all the Music you helped to create and that is now a positive part of the lives of so many people around the world. Long life to you, Ray!
Happy birthday, Ray! You're bass playing has always been a great source of inspiration -- along with your overall breadth of talent on so many other instruments!
One of the most inspired, talented and fearless multi instrumentalist and composer of the rock scene of the 70s. Not a simple rock star but a Musician who managed to share overwhelming creativity in a band context. Much respect to the boy. A big hug from Italy.
