I get what you're saying, but there are degrees of fandom. If you rounded up a hundred people who say "I like Star Wars" and then asked if they knew what May 4th meant, not everyone would raise their hands. It's like the people who "like Marvel" when they really just mean the MCU, versus people like Sheldon who knows every incarnation of Spiderman comics.

@@bl3343 True, but the references made in the show are all very surface level. And they treat these surface level references like they're super nerdy. Like, they talk about Darth Vader and the Empire a lot. They never mention lesser known characters like Darth Bane or even just stuff from the novels. Also for the record, I have not met a single person who liked Star Wars and didn't know what May the 4th meant. Hell, I've met plenty of non-Star Wars fans who knew what it meant.

@@TheIllusiveMan11 I don't know when this particular episode came out, but May the Forth be with you has definitely grown in popularity. I would describe myself as a casual Star Wars fan (movies, shows, and some of the video games and books), and I don't think I knew about the holiday until 2015 or 2016.

It's sadly one of the downside when the show became more and more popular and they wanted to include the viewers more ("omg I get that reference, I'm such a nerd!") They basically toned it done to Star Wars, Star Trek and Marvel/DC. Remember when they made it out to be the biggest nerdy thing ever when the 7th Star Wars movie came out? My mother watched that on release day and she isn't even hugely into Star Wars...

I think it's because it blended Sci Fi, Fantasy, and philosophy in ways no one had seen before. Also, great characters and quotable lines. That said, it's ok to not like something popular. People would look at me funny when I said "I don't get Game of Thrones".

At least she didn't call Star Wars dopy like Amy.
