Celebrating 100 days sugar free today. Also stopped alcohol and refined carbs at the same time. First month was difficult but now I feel like a new person. Lost 50 lbs and regained my energy and mind clarity. The only thing I retained is eating 3 small pieces of extra dark chocolate after dinner. Best gift I have ever given myself. Life is good!

If your eating “sugar free” dark chocolate it’s not a treat. Real unsweetened chocolate is disgusting. If you are eating sweetened dark chocolate then your not sugar free!😊

I had given sugar up several times in my life as I knew it made my immune system problems much worse. But it never worked in the long run. Then, I slowly began changing my diet in other ways (eating organic, not eating processed/fast foods). As I did this, I noticed that my craving for sugary foods lessened and lessened. Then, a couple of years ago, I decided to give up flour and sugar. I allowed myself to backslide once in a while, but these cravings, too, began to disappear. I feel so much better, am doing more exercise and walking and have lost over the 2 year period about 16 pounds so that I now weigh what I did in my 30s-early 40s. BTW, I'm 80 years old. So, if I can do it, anyone can do it.

@@sandhillmom2 hi dear❣️ I gave up sugar( in pretty much every form) stuff like bread( gluten ) corn and corn products, I ate popcorn a lot, now no, anything not “ keto” basically… Dr. Eric Berg has lists of inflammatory foods… as does Becky and several others on RU-vid… check out also foods to avoid for arthritis… I’d gotten hydraluric injections and it worked after 2 months, 7-8 months no pain, then the pain would return… and cortisone did nothing. I just tried “one more thing” and I believe , for whatever stage of arthritis I’m in, that what I’m doing is working … and I was in brutal pain in my right knee a lot… I’m also losing the “ pandemic” pounds I’d put on during covid isolation. It’s just working as that’s all I’m doing that I can pinpoint and that’s a deliberate effort… so far so good… sending you love, peace, and health♥️‼️☮️🕉😍

For years I've struggled with belly fat and being bloated. I've been checking my diet (basically less fat) and regularly go to the gym spending an hour minimum there. A few months ago I came across an article about the "evils" of sugar and decided to cut it off from my diet. In just a month I lost 2kgs in weight and 2 inches off my waist! All those years trying to figure out what's wrong with me why despite everything* I don't lose weight, it's sugar all along!

I am 70 years old and have ditched the sugar for 5years now and my health has improved 95%, but I must admit the craving is still there, it is only my willpower and nature that keeps me going, I suppose it is being like an alcoholic that must be aware of temptation every day. and at the moment I am in the middle of a 120 hour fast, willpower gets me through.

I'm with you--I'm mostly off sugar, but when I do have a "treat", I don't find it too sweet, and it is easy to have more. However, I have seen the cravings diminish and been able to serve a dessert and watch others eat it without feeling tempted. Wondering if I'm eating too much fruit. And I started drinking Propel electrolyte, which has non-sugar sweetener in it. I will start focusing more again on positive whole-foods. My thrifty soul finds it difficult not to use up all the "free food" we get.

I quit sugar 30 days ago, including gluten and the greatest surprise was cellulite I had for over 10 years vanished in a month! 💃🏾 Motivation or what? never going back + All my skin issues and food intolerances cleared up too due to a gut issue. Sugar is one of the main causes of inflammation

I quit all sugars and sweeteners almost 7 years ago. I originally planned to allow myself treats for birthdays or holidays, but one time of having a dessert made me change my mind. I felt so much better after about three days that I didn't want to suffer the negative physical feelings from eating sweets again. I had been a sugar addict for years but now I never want to go back, not even a little bit.

I have an anecdotal example - having been invited to my friend’s mom’s thanksgiving dinner age 13, I’ve been a big fan of American dishes ever since. As the internet opened up, I have been able to access so many American recipes from here in England. I almost always halve the amount of sugar in the recipes, if I follow them correctly, we find them unbearably sweet. I also noticed that sugar features as an ingredient in many savoury recipes. Well done to every one who has cut out or reduced sugar. Thank you for all your informative and supportive videos, Dr

🥰 The sugar cravings do indeed go away when you’re serious about not keeping it in your diet. There’s wonderful fruits and recipes without sugar or sugar substitutes. (sugar substitutes keep your sugar cravings there so I don’t use them. Plus those chemicals are very unhealthy.) There’s lots of recipes online. You will reach your goals faster without sugar. So many health benefits when you cut sugar out. My weight is back to normal, blood pressure is normal, no more pre-diabetes. I have more energy. Feeling so much better! I've been keto and mostly omad for the past 2 years and currently turned to 4 days keto 3 days carnivore. Anyways lost about 100 lbs with many help improvements that came with it. However I tried sugar maybe half a dozen times so far and each time initially it was a turn off, but if I persistent on with sugar, it became addictive again. We have to be honest, sugar is dangerous for us kind. Wonderfull motivational and informative vids Doc. 👍

But once the reason for that goal was over (I’d been cast in the musical Mamma Mia and had to wear a sparkly spandex jumpsuit onstage! I am a recent cancer survivor. My sugar addiction got worse after I finished treatment. I am on oral maintenance meds, which led to weight gain. The treatment also put me into menopause. Sugar addiction is very formidable. I do not want a recurrence of cancer, and I felt I would eventually become diabetic. I became concerned about my pancreas as well. Today is day one. I'm on day 5, got an annoying headache this morning and had to take 1000mg of tylenol. I cut off completely on Sugar, wheat, grains and dairy and processed foods. Only taking some carbs from Potatoes, sweet potatoes and Quinoa in small quantities. Not easy. I suffer from IBS, body pain is down to 70% less, I no longer feel my legs and lower back stiff when I wake up, have more energy when I walk and exercise but I feel like my body is complaining and fighting against. Been having difficulties to sleep at night since I started, I know it will pass but it's hard. Been with random mild headaches since started. Doing Paleo Diet. For some unknown reason I'm eating a lot less now, feel full with a few bites and no longer feel sleepy after lunch. Taking fresh fruits when I feel cravings.

I never considered equating sugar with drugs or alcohol until I tried giving it up. Experienced horrific withdrawal efx although they were short in duration. However I have not found sugar to be unpleasant tasting since, so I'm still able to consume it when I want. Big difference is I now recognize that I'm actually poisoning rather than treating myself and that's enough to maintain very low levels of consumption. Still working on total elimination, but have reduced intake significantly. Great video!!

I was a full-blown sugar addict. 5 years after having quit, now I do not like the taste of sugar. I have no temptations … ever. In fact, I cannot even tolerate the sweetness of even the keto acceptable fruits, ie berries. And when I very occasionally make a keto muffin I use about half the sugar recommended in the recipe. Never would believe this could happen. At the same time I know if I went back to sugar I could easily return to being an addict. I honestly believe, for me, If i go back to doing what i’ve always done, I will get the same results I have always done. Personally I get a great deal of satisfaction from no longer being addicted to sweets as I am no longer supporting those who want to keep us addicted in order to keep lining their pockets.

I’m amazed at how level my appetite is now and how cravings are near non existent. I’m at the two month mark and I’m about to increase the time between having a dessert from once a week to once every two weeks. I find this remarkable considering the amount of saturated fat I consume... proving that dietary cholesterol has nothing to do with blood cholesterol. This is the easiest ADF cycle I have been on, now that I’ve cut sugar and processed food. My body does not have crazy cravings anymore. It’s easy to fast. I plan to continue ADF for about 90 days.

Just for encouragement for others I wiil say I gave up sugar before the four major sugar holidays- Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter and find I don't crave it anymore. I had gotten to where I didn't like fruit and veggies and now enjoy them very much. You will be so happy to do the same and can do it. Thank you Dr. Gillaspy for helping me to go the keto route.

I am on my journey of a low carb and low sugar way of life... All the things you talk about are true, It's odd because every once in a while I still have a desire for a sweet treat and if I do... I just don't enjoy it as much as before.

I must be different than most people. I have been low-carb for 3 months and have lost 22 pounds, and I feel great. However, I haven’t lost my desire for sugar in the least and fully plan on introducing sweet treats again into my diet at some point (just one every day or three). Life is too sad without sugar for me and refuse to eliminate it forever. I believe you CAN find a balance.

Some can. I eat them on holiday and birthday. I love fruit, berries, pineapple, oranges etc. I still love the memory of certain things but the desire to have them is less. I also find a bite of a candy bar is enough when before I wanted more.

I can't have cheat days, even if it's only once every few months. One scoop of ice cream or piece of cake and I'll go on a sugar binge that lasts for weeks. It's like the saying for alcoholics that 'you can't just have one drink'. I've heard about the test with mice where they chose sugar over cocaine so it really does seem like a drug.

I don't keep snacks in the house, because I can't help myself if it's there. I'm on keto, but last time I had a cheat day I had some Doritos, and I finished the whole bag. I could literally feel my brain telling me keep eating, it was like I was hypnotized.. That doesn't happen with real food. After that, I'm gonna just stop the cheat days.

biggest problem for me is giving up processed foods. `My wife would never go for it but we are retired and I could cook eggs for her and she would probably like that, but we would have to separate foods I could do it, I lost 50lbs for a back operation. I stayed away from sugar that long. I wag hungry and my wife gave me a banana.. Seriously I bit into that thing and a real rush went through my body. It took 10 minutes to savor that banana. Even sugar in fruit is addicting. I would like to slowly break that sweet habit, it would take time but by the end of the year it could happen. Wonderful channel. Thank you

Dr. Becky, this is spot on. I used to love having Peanut Butter M&Ms, those are way too sweet now. I've also greatly reduced my alcohol consumption, I've only had 5 beers since the beginning of January, but I had a beer last weekend, and I could really taste the alcohol in the beer. Not sure if I was imagining it or if it works the same as sugar.

I gave up alcohol about a year ago, had a sip of wine the other day and all I could taste was alcohol, didn’t enjoy at all! Makes it easier to abstain for sure. I gave up all sweet tasting food 4 days ago and hoping for the same results. The alcohol experiment gives me hope that I will not enjoy sugary foods after getting over the cravings/addiction.

From the thought that is would be impossible to give up sugar to no sugar fairly easily. No cravings for sugar (or carbs) now. During the holidays (Italian family) I had no desire for pasta, bread or pastries, or even sugar in my espresso. I have no problem having sweets in my home. I am not at all tempted. It has been eight months now. I lost 51 pounds. My arthritis is way much better. I feel great.

I used to think that people who came off sugar and said that they eventually found it disgusting, or that they felt better, were trying to convince themselves (I know - very cynical). I was drinking a 7-11 tank of Dr Pepper/Coke a day PLUS eating sugared cereal and whatever else I wanted. When I went past the age of 50 and my blood sugar started moving to nearly 100 (and my doctor told me not to worry about diabetes because everyone gets it to some degree), I said "no way" and went cold turkey. I was a zombie for almost 2 weeks. That was nearly 10 years ago and now whenever I eat something sweet I feel like the roof of my mouth is about to explode. I was totally wrong - foods taste so much different and better. Tea without sugar is wonderful. Life is so much better. I wrote the above without viewing the video all the way through - it took me years before I would even politely eat anything with sugar in order to avoid hurting someone's feelings. I said "no," and I found that, eventually, people/family members respected it, and after a while, they wouldn't even offer it to me. And I was fine with that. I do very rarely now eat at a function now, but I couldn't always do that. I am so happy I did it, even though it was a challenge for the first few years.

Same. I’m happy to comment on Dr. Becky’s posts to give her a boost. I’m sugar free 99% of the time. I still use stevia and erythritol a little bit in coffee and such. I do notice a couple things: 1. If I do cave and have real sugar, my hearts starts racing and pounding and 2: if I make myself a keto treat like a keto mug cinnamon roll, I start craving sugar again.

It seems to me, that when giving up other substances that go very well with the substance you're trying to kick, it seems to be easier. Such as coffee that goes well with cookies or donuts. Tobacco usage that goes well with the alcohol of choice. etc.

The positive encouragement is a good thing. But to be clear, these stories of not having an issue with sugar after some period of time isn’t true for everyone. I went keto and cut sugar and lost 60 Pounds and I wanted sugar every day. I finally caved. I gained all 60 pounds back. Then I started again. Keto. No sugar. Not even keto “treats” and I lost 125 pounds. I wanted sugar every single day. I eventually caved. And I have gained every 125 of those pounds back. I’m Not here to discourage anyone from cutting out sugar. But I am here to discount this notion that once sugar is out then it’s no problem.

Hello dr Becky. I have been watching your channel for awhile now and very grateful for taking so much of your time to put all these info for us. I am on my 3rd week of keto and before that I gave up all refined sugar, including all syrups like honey, agave etc but I was still eating high carbs, like pasta, rice, beans, buckwheat and all the fruits even tho the fruit I barely ate but at least 2 bananas a week . I love that on keto I don’t feel hungry or crave any carbs 99% of the time. The problem is I started felling like I will pass out even tho I don’t feel hungry at all and I have no choice but to eat and today it was so bad that I had to ask someone for a candy otherwise I would definitely pass out and I was outside and didn’t want to embarrass myself. And it was the first sugar I had in 6 weeks. What do you recommend in my situation , I really don’t want to go back to eating carbs, but maybe do you think I should slowly go to keto? I mean I never had problems with fainting before keto and I realize that is because I went 20g or less carbs overnight before eating like maybe 200-300 carbs to prior and maybe my body is not quite ready for that. And if yes, what kind of carbs are better to include into my keto? the less refined the better of course. Thank you! P.s I do clean keto, lots of leafy greens, vegetables and 95% organic, grass fed, pasteurized produce. And lots of good quality oils, like organic olive oil, grass fed butter, organic heavy whipping cream, organic mct oil with each of my meal And I take electrolytes from dr Berg so I don’t know what else to do

Did this for 3 months or so once when I had a lot of weight to lose. Once that weight had gone I have always found it really hard, as the motivation and desire/need to get rid of dangerously excess weight was no longer there. If I lived alone it would be so easy as I just wouldn't buy any bad stuff, but no one can expect other people to give it up too, who live in the same house. That's just not fair.

Am I not the norm? I quit sugar and other than the first few days, I haven’t found it difficult. If I do get a craving, I eat something salty, such as pistachios. I carry macadamia nuts or almonds, and baby bel cheese with me in my purse and gym bag. Maybe watching so many videos on the detrimental effects of sugar helps me see it as not a treat at all!! I do make keto desserts every once in a while, with monk fruit. Mostly for my diabetic husband. I’m pre diabetic. My fasting glucose has gone down from 120 to the 80s in about 4 months. I quit wheat and alcohol as well. Low carb but not going for ketosis. I call my diet “kinda keto”. Im doing time restricted eating. I’m hoping my senior years continue to be healthy and active!!

at 70 I have avoided sugar and wheat for several decades. Everyone tells me I am good for my age, and I can run and lift weights like someone half my age. and have never been on medications When you get past 60 health is priority 1. Like booze drugs and cigs, it is a quite nice hit, but the long term effects are so much better I will easily live healthy and fit to 100
