Chilean Guavas are my absolute favourite berries, so I want to grow as many as possible!
Last year I took a few cuttings and after an initial 50% success rate (after one month), I took a few more!
Now that we are nearing the end of Winter (yay!), I thought I'd do another update to show just how well they have done. The beautiful variegated ones are starting to shoot out gorgeous new pink foliage. It's so exciting!
Here is the video from when I took the cuttings last year in case you'd like to see it: • Chilean Guava Propagat...

Very nice! I didn't realise they could be propagated so easily by cuttings, I'll have to give this a go.

I definitely think it's worth it. You can't have too many Chilean Guavas🙂

I'm glad that all worked well for you, you can't beat free plants. I just got a Chilean guava plant Burbank cultivar and a Luma Apiculata, I'm ready for some of that great tasting fruit, I don't know how long I will have to wait, I should ask the people I got them from for a ballpark time.
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard Год назад
Yes, the waiting time really varies. It seems the seed grown ones take forever, but either way, they'll definitely be worth the wait. They really are the most delicious berries. I planted my Luma Apiculata out last year after babying it the previous year, but it died when the temperature dropped to -8C°. Such a shame! I should have keep it potted up and out of the cold.

Apparently, they were (the UK's) Queen Victoria's favourite fruit and they were grown in Cornwall or Devon (furthest south part of the country) to make jam for her.

I heard that too😄😀. Love historical facts like that and I must say Her Majesty had great taste. It seems that the berries are regaining popularity now, as the plants are quite easy to find for sale. I'm just surprised that they aren't cultivated like blueberries.

Yes I've found they are a bit hit and miss on rooting. My outdoors one have all been badly damaged 🙄🙄

This Winter has been hard on them. My big Ka-Pow I planted out in November looks to have a bit of damage om some of the foliage; but it still looks better than the Bella Berry one did after a Winter in the greenhouse last year.

What season do you take the cuttings? Im in the southern hemisphere (nz)
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard Год назад
I took cuttings a few times last year to see what would work and the ones that I took in November had a 100% success-rate. November is the end of our Autumn. I overwintered them in an unheated greenhouse and they are shooting out loads of new growth now.They are very hardy, but don't like cold winds or prolonged cold weather. I have taken to wrapping up the ones outside when we have snow and frost after they got a bit damaged on their tips during a freezing couple of days.
