These are such wonderful evergreen berry bushes.
They were surprisingly easy to propagate too - I love making free copies of my plants to fill the garden and give as gifts.
Here's the video of when I took the cuttings just about 8 months ago now. I'm so happy they are doing so well: • Chilean Guava Propagat...

Love these fruit, I got them in the summer where I lived but it was up against a wall… I think mine will be much later now. I think the flambo is my favourite flavour.
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard Год назад
Yes, I think the fact that these ones are in such a protected spot in front of a white wall has brought the flowers on early. The poor KaPow I planted into the garden only has tight little flowerbuds, but that's more than I expected after it was so damaged by the freezing Winter.
@tropicalsat52n86
@tropicalsat52n86 Год назад
@@backyardsnackyardyou are right, a white wall will make a massive difference in creating a micro climate. I don’t think it was psychosomatic the fact that I told you they taste like cola and you tasted cola too… I honestly think they do. You inspired me to take cuttings of these guys and have loads of them… I might create a hedge of them
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard Год назад
@@tropicalsat52n86 I agree - they really tasted like that. I can't wait to eat more of them. I am so going to cover them as soon as they are pollinated because the birds are already far too keen on emptying out the flowerpots. I really hope you do make a hedge; it would be amazing!!

Hello Dani👋 🥰 I wish your channel will grow bigger and bigger, and I wish you the best in life with many health, success, and happiness. May I ask what website you order your Chilean Guava at, please, and what kind of soil do they like? Grow them in the full sun or shade? I had one many years ago, but in the U.S.A., California is so hard to grow these. I love your garden! Thank you so much🙏🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️
@backyardsnackyard

Thank you so much for your super sweet comments. You are so kind. I bought the Bella Berry one online from a company called 3fatpigs.co.uk (love the cute name) and the variegated one "Flambeau" from amazon. They grow really fast. I just grow them in regular compost and fed them some Fish Blood and Bone as well as Epsom Salts in the Spring, but nothing since. These ones seem happy at the moment in full sun, but I am keeping them well watered as they can dry out so quickly in those pots and we have been blessed with wonderful warm weather for a month now. I hope that helps and that you get to enjoy some of your own. They really are the best tasting berries to grow in my opinion😀

Wow, yours are covered in flowers! I noticed one of my new Kapow plants is flowering already. Your cuttings are doing so well too, did you use any rooting hormone when you took them?
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard Год назад
Oh, I'm so pleased you'll get to taste them this year. They are so good! Yes, I dipped the cuttings in rooting hormone. The ones I took earlier in the Summer only had about a 50% success rate, which I think was down to the fact that it was so hot last Summer so they dried out, because the ones I took in October had a much higher success rate.
@PeterEntwistle
@PeterEntwistle Год назад
@@backyardsnackyard I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I get some to try 🤞. I trimmed my flambeau and put them in a pot a few months ago, but I don’t think any took, I didn’t use any hormone though.
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard Год назад
@@PeterEntwistle I don't know how long mine took before they rooted...if yours haven't dried out maybe they're biding their time...I would have thought a few months ago would have been an ideal time to take cuttings, as they were still dormant.
@PeterEntwistle
@PeterEntwistle Год назад
@@backyardsnackyard Yeah, I think mine have all dried out. I'll have to try it again soon but I'll probably wait until the chance of flowers forming has passed as I wouldn't want to cut off any growth before it started flowering.

Hi Dani. Are you having any leaves issue on your chilean guava this winter time?
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard 7 месяцев назад
The one that I planted in an unprotected spot in the garden has suffered what looks like wind or cold burn on the tips of some of the leaves. I don't want to dig it up, but maybe I should. It is obviously not in a good spot. They really need to be out of cold Winter winds. How are yours doing?
@onebicycle3772
@onebicycle3772 7 месяцев назад
@@backyardsnackyard mine developed some black spots on the leaves and the tips are drying. Do you think they will survive?
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard 7 месяцев назад
@@onebicycle3772 yes, I think they will be okay. It sounds similar to the one I described. I plan to tidy it up by snipping off dead or dried bits in a month or so and then give it a good feed so it can get ready to flower in May🤞

@@backyardsnackyard Does your chilean guava have dark spots on their leaves as well?
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard 7 месяцев назад
@@onebicycle3772 sadly, yes. It's definitely down to the position I planted it in, as the other ones in pots and sheltered from cold winds haven't got a single bit of damage. Half of this one died last year during a deep freeze, but it bounced back and fruited. It just sets them back a bit, so I definitely want to move mine before next Winter.
@onebicycle3772
@onebicycle3772 Год назад
Hi. How do you take care of your chilean guava in winter? Also may I ask what variety have you got?
@backyardsnackyard
@backyardsnackyard Год назад
They are quite hardy, so I leave them outside. I think they need protection from cold winds as the one that was left in a windy spot really suffered when the temperature dropped to -8C°, but the others were completely fine and are full of flowers, as you can see on the video. I plan to use frost blankets on frosty nights next Winter. The ones in full bloom are Bella Berry and Flambeau (the variegated one). Ka Pow has the biggest berries, but was the one that really suffered die back after last Winter. It is in bloom now, though - a bit later than the others. They really are wonderful plants to grow. Do you have some?
