Jeff Furr you can get or make a "stinger" hitch. it's like your regular 2" square reciever ball setup but the square tube is longer. I use one on my pickup for pulling short tongued trailers. it basically puts your trailer ball farther back from the reciever.

We love to take this thing camping, it really fits our family's needs and it's usually a conversation piece wherever we take it. Jeff Furr Agree! But 1st... Great job as you can tell by comments! Appeals to car guys, DIY guys, camping guys and even those tiny home guys. I had a pop up that was given to me and all chewed up, so I knocked off the top and used it as a trailer, but most important about that you could pick off the jacks mentioned above and possibly even the canopy crank system that you hook your drill to crank it open your top. +ScubaMathis great idea with the pop up, I have a friend that has a pop up that's in need of a lot of TLC. I've tried to get it to use the parts for my trailer or to rebuild it if it isn't to bad. He won't let go of it though, it's been there in the same spot for at least five years, maybe one day.

After putting about three months of thought into the build, I decided a teardrop wasn’t really the best idea at that time since we have five kids and they go where we go. I decided to stick with tent camping and the trailer turned into the gear hauler you see. The Furrminator the guy at the top is what I'm wanting to build. I'm wanting to use it as a normal camper for my wife & I. But I also plan on equipping it as a sort of bugout camper. Jeff Furr did you fuse any of the curcuits? you didnt say nor did i see any.

very VERY simple fix for that vent... to keep the water out... just put one of those dryer vents like on the outside of a house over it... The hood will keep the rain rolling down and you could even attach it so that your vent is high enough inside of the hood that rain would stay out even on the highway.

Get you an inexpensive trailer to haul your gear, fix it up to fit your needs and take off. Your boys would probably love tent camping more than an RV anyway. Nice work Jeff. "A country boy can survive." If the electrical grid ever goes down and you need to bug out somewhere you will be in good shape. The ones posting negative comments will be SOL. I'm thinking about buying one of these and was wondering if you kept track of what everything you put on there weighs and how much was left for cargo. My biggest concern is the axle and the hubs and tires. I want to haul three 55 gal rain barrels for emergency water and fuel, but I love the solar/electrical set up you've got on the front. Very ingenious.

Have the same trailer. 55mph is news to me, don't remember seeing anything about that in the paperwork. Thank you. Wow all those trips back and forth from S. Florida to NC @ 70.

I agree. The thinking is excellent and the craftsmanship is very tidy indeed. Your woodworking and metal skills are very good and the results are sturdy and eye-pleasing. You should be very proud. May I make some suggestions? 1) If you put your water inlet box in the corner of your front electrical box, you could run the water pipe from the inlet connector to the tank under the floor of the trailer. That would eliminate the framing box on the inside wall and give you a more unobstructed wall. I would build a water-resistant box inside the electrical compartment and drill a few drain holes (with screen to keep the dirt dawbers out) -- that way, if there was a water leak, it would just fall on the ground and not be a problem inside the compartment. 2) Similarly, I'd use threaded flat nuts (the kind where the threaded tube goes inside a drilled hole in the wood) for places like the inside fasteners for your spare tire. As above, that would keep the wall as flat and unobstructed inside as possible. 3) You could put a piece of 1/2 inch plywood with hinges on the outside of the lid. Raise the lid as you do now, then flip the 4 foot wide panel over your counters etc. That would make a solid roof over your work area, food prep, storage, snacks, etc. A tarp is good but in my experience, a solid roof/sunshield is much better. You could do support legs that go from the ground (probably need screw adjustment feet) to the counters and then up to the roof. You could add a place for a small work/conveniece light over your food prep and dish washing area. (You'd need a little creative thought for the best way to mount and access your "roof rack" but that should be pretty simple). 4) I'd replace your electrical inlet socket. To power your unit as it is, you'd need a cord with a male-connector plug on both ends. I'd eBay or check camping gear websites for a connector unit. They have a water-proof cover and inside is a three-prong connector. You just open the cover and push your power cord onto the connector pins. I'd also have some stress reliever attachment there, too. That way, even if someone tripped over your cord and dislodged it, there wouldn't be live plug pins there for someone to touch by accident. Camping is often on damp grass and similar areas and we really ought to be in favor of everything electric being as safe as possible. 5) I didn't see exactly how you switch between "shore power" electricity (120V) and power from the inverter. What you could do is have a regular "outdoor" socket mounted on the inside wall in the electrical compartment. Run the wire from the inlet socket inside of the compartment to that. Then have a plug on the main wire to your interior socket. If you have good electrical power coming through your "shore connection", plug the main wire into the socket. If you want to run 120V from the inverter, plug the main wire into the inverter socket. Of course, you can also plug a battery charger into the outdoor socket so your battery is being charged while you're using power from the "shore cord". Doing it this way would give you safe and isolated use of your 120V electrical feed and allow you to charge the battery when you have external 120V power available at a campsite. 6) On the subject of safety, I think I'd try to find a mini-breaker box (like a "Square-D" box) and run my 120V circuits through it. That breaker box would be inside the electrical compartment; if you don't have one, you'd be depending on the breaker for the "shore power" supply and if you had something go wrong with what you have plugged into your 120V socket in the trailer, you might not get a breaker that far away to trip quickly enough to provide good safety. But all this is icing on the cake -- it's a great job (although I'd encourage you to think about the electrical safety aspects) and you ought to be really proud of your work. stanley makes a fold away bracket supports for that side mount table top. i used them on my step van fer years as a fold up work bench on the side they were about 40.00 a set of two , lift up the top fold the diagional brace up inward slips in joints to fold down . simplely used 1 pc.. 13 ply 3/4 marine plywood 2' x 6 ' . the hinges are the inexpensive method fer sure. just a little added set up time. fantastic job all around. congrates

***** True, but the fact that this trailer has sides that gives it a whole lot more strength. Not sure that he is even close to a ton of weight total on this trailer. Just when you change the diameter of the tire the bearings and the tire are going to last a lot longer. I believe because of the cost of tires these trailer manufacturers skimp on axles and tires to save money and rate them solely on axle capacities. Of course if something breaks and kills someone the trailer manufacturer is no longer liable but the person doing the modifications is. As soon as he built the enclosure on this trailer the warranty and liability is shifted to the owner and it is up to the insurance company and the state whether or not they will insure it or license it. A good corporate lawyer could prove the manufacturer is not responsible just because you put larger bolts to hold the license plate on than what came with the trailer or upgraded the lights to LED.
