Harbor Freight's electric hoist is a good deal for the money but not designed to be mounted to a gantry crane. In this video I explain how I built a mount using trolleys that allowed it to be used with the Jeg's Gantry Crane that I recently purchased.

I have not yet built a trolley system. Only in my mind. So I have been looking for some "How-to" videos. I have watched many videos where they struggle with the winch tilting when mounted from ONE trolley. I got to thinking to use two trolleys and make an adapter plate. Then I came across your video which verifies my way of thinking. Yours is even more simplified. Awesome video and information. I now know how I want to build mine when I can finally get to. Thank you for posting.👍

This is the best solution I’ve found for mounting these winches to trolleys. I just made mine like this yesterday and it’s working amazingly - thanks!

Thanks for this informative video. I have a gantry with the chain hoist been wanting an electric hoist you came up with a superb solution for the Harbor Freight electric hoist. Many thanks. 👍👍

Thanks for the info. The hardest part was finding something to cut the 1-1/16” holes LOL. But it’s up and working great!! I did this by myself and that hoist was heavy. I used straps to pull it up a few inches at a time until it got to the top.

I agree this is the best way to hang such hoist. Have made one myself a couple of years ago, first tried with 1 trolley because i ony had 1. Didnt work. then i build something similair. Only diffrence is i had a piece of square tube laying around wich fitted perfectly in the original brackets of the hoist. Drilled 2 holes in the square tube to fit the axles of the dolly's and welded plates for strength around the holes. That thing was indestructable. i had it installed on a 6m I-beam and that i beam was also hanging by 4 dolly's on i-beam either side.

Neat idea, I could've used that thing when I pulled the motor from my pickup. The Ford diesel 7.3 weighs in at 1100 pounds. I used an engine hoist and two other people besides me to wrestle it out of the truck and put in the replacement motor. One big heavy SOB engine.
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone 3 года назад
This definitely would've helped! That is a heavy engine for sure. Once you have a gantry crane, you constantly think of things to lift, lol.

Crazy they make you do all that, and buy 2 trolleys. Was thinking about getting 1 of these to mount on my shed's ridge trolley and keep the old budgit free to bring to jobs, but guess not

Great video, making an electric hoist even more versatile. Did you use the bolts that came with the hoist or perhaps use stronger ones, since I would guess the weakest "link" in that design would be those bolts/nuts. Thanks for sharing.
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone 2 года назад
I ended using the hardware that came with the hoist. The brackets were thrown in the scrap metal pile, but I did use the bolts that were supplied.

Looks great. Would it be better to also put a spacer in the space between the two pieces of angle iron so that the attaching rod doesn't start to loosen?

Not a bad idea, or even some locktite.

I found this very helpful I've tried connecting my Harbor freight electric hoist to my gantry crane with chain and the interesting observation is the twisting of the spool causes the cable to rub against the automatic shut off stopping the motor relatively frequently with a few clamps I got it to work just fine but I'm curious under heavy load if you wouldn't have some twisting take place in the sense of one of the sides wheels lifting off the beam slightly as the load shifts from the twisting of the spooling of the cable being loaded a lot more than the other if it makes any sense to you lol
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone Год назад
I think i understand what you are getting at. My hoist doesn't wiggle side to side since it's tight enough against the rails. In other words, there isn't enough play for the wheels to lift off the beam. With the right amount of spacers added, I was able to avoid this problem.

I'm looking to buy a similar setup so I can remove my h3t pickup bed due to a rusty frame but my bed now probably weights about 1000 pounds due to overland build out rooftop tent drawer in bed bed rack , I don't want to dissemble anything so im looking to see what options are available

Great video, does the hoist stay outside? If so how do you protect it from the elements?
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone 2 года назад
It does stay outside for now. I wrap it up with a tarp and spray the frame with fluid film. So far so good. I'll be talking a more about this during my live stream this weekend, Episode 50. Hope you can check it out.

This is great! Is that 3" angle with 3/16 thickness? Thanks for the help!
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone Год назад
To be honest, I had the chunk of angle laying around in my scrap bin and never even measured it, but it's got to be at least close to that!
@marcos22571
@marcos22571 3 года назад
Can it lift your trucks engine from the bay? And also that angle iron is called 3 inch angle iron. There's 1 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch and 4 inch angle iron.
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone 3 года назад
Thanks for clarifying the name of the angle iron. The crane and hoist combo is more than capable of lifting the engine, and that is part of the plan down the line. BTW, I plan to discuss your comment during my live stream tonight, episode 41. Hopefully you can check it out. Thanks!

At 2:31 I would have thought you would have spaced the brackets out wider so that the holes were mounted closer to the vertical section of the angle iron. That way you wouldn't use as many inside spacers and there would be much less moment on the mounting bolts, with the vertical section of the angle iron and the roller plate nearly touching (could even weld AND bolt it this way). In this configuration you are not lifting by the bolts in tension but in quite a lot of bending moment. I think that you have much reduced capacity in this configuration. You really can't just simply take the ratings of each part and call it 1 Ton if you have modified it heavily and have have not tested it to destruction with load monitoring. Don't get me wrong, this is a great looking upgrade and a job well done, I am just not sure that your numbers are where you think they are.
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone Год назад
You could be on to something, but I also believe the spacers are helping in preventing the bolt from bending. With enough spacers, it's as much tension the other way too.
@ryanfreeman125
@ryanfreeman125 Год назад
@@GettinJunkDone I don't really think the spacers are doing anything. The spacers length is determined by the distance of the mounting holes on the angle iron. Since there isn't an inside spacers it's just freely sitting there. And still that is additional moment on the horizontal bar as well as the two mounting bolts. No question, it would be stronger (possibly rated to actual capacity) if you move those out.
@GettinJunkDone
@GettinJunkDone Год назад
I see what you mean now. I'm going to leave it as is, I don't think that a bolt/ fastener of that size will fail. I appreciate your input!
