Oops! I found out that there was not enough support on the bed of my truck to support the Harbor Freight mini crane. I had to remove the crane, add a larger baseplate to make it stronger. I hope this video helps.

I am having the same problem in my RAM 2500. Great idea. No welding. ❤great video. Thanks. Very informative! Now to find someone who can add it to my truck!

Yes. This crane is great, but it does put a lot of pressure on the base. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I am looking at some of the cranes on amazon that seem to be a bit beefier than this one, I am also going in to a Ram 2500 (2019)

Just bought one of these cranes and have been pondering how to reinforce my Ford's aluminum sheet metal. I think the only thing you missed with your reinforcing plate is extending it to the side (towards the center of the bed), Your reinforcement is great for fore and aft loads, but in use the crane will swing sideways, so more reinforement there would be helpful. Thanks for the video!

I really like the way you corrected this issue. Most I’ve seen weld cross members under the bed and it gets very involved. This looks like it’s just the ticket for me as all I need it for is to lift my fifth wheel hitch in and out of the bed. Thanks for an excellent upgrade video to the Harbor freight crane!

Thanks, Brian. I think I still need more reinforcement. I am going to install a 4' long piece of angle iron under my truck. What I have now still flexes my bed a bit. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great video, have been wanting a lift like this for a while, didn't know where to get one. If you don't make mistakes than you are not learning, thanx again!

Hey Dave, thanks for watching and commenting. The Harbor Freight crane is a great buy. Just make sure you have plenty of support under your truck bed. The leverage at the bottom of the crane is enough to bend your truck bed if you don't provide enough support.

Great video. We will be getting that lift this week for getting logs into the back of an old GMC. I would wave liked to see how it was bolted on the underside though. How the supports were located. Others than that, we will be reinforcing ours also because of all he rust we get in Western NY! Thanks again!

Hi Ed. Yes, my bed was rusty too. I just used some long angle iron under my bed. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Now that I see what you are doing. I see how this should be mounted now. I probably would have bought a 1/4" to a 3/8" steel plate. However the aluminum will handle anything you put it through. Good job.

@RVSite2Sight 3 года назад
Hi Bennie. I actually tried to buy a 3/8" steel plate, but the fabricator had this piece of aluminum, and it was plenty strong, so I used it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I custom built a frame for under my truck. 10"X10" frame out of 1.5"x3" corner steel welded with the mounting bars welded in and them bolted down. Shakes the whole truck
@RVSite2Sight
@RVSite2Sight 2 года назад
Hey Chaz. Yep. The nice little crane really needs a beefier mounting. Otherwise, it will definitely bend the bed of the truck. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Well after all I still need to put a 1/8" or thicker steel plate. About ripped a hole through my truck bed.

How is this holding up? Any issues with that metal plate bending? I like the setup but was wondering if that plate would handle close to 1,000 lbs? I have a few heavy items 600+ I need to pickup soon and was thinking about getting this crane or the one with a hand winch.
@RVSite2Sight
@RVSite2Sight Год назад
Nick, sorry about the late reply. There is no doubt that this is a great little mini crane. However, the truck bed will need a lot of reinforcement. The crane never left my truck bed bent, but if I added too much weight, I'm sure it would. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@ccr542
@ccr542 9 месяцев назад
Quick question though, did your tailgate close properly after installing that plate? I know on my F250 just the truck bed coating was too thick and caused it to rub but a 3/8” piece of aluminum would definitely keep my gate from closing.

Hi do you have a video showing that this fixed the issue of the bed bending?
@RVSite2Sight
@RVSite2Sight 3 года назад
Hi Kristin. I do not. The crane is advertised to pick up as much as 1000 pounds. I only picked up a 100 pound generator, and I could see the metal on the truck bed flexing. I guess I could have beefed it up under the bed to solve that problem, but my latest video shows what I decided to do. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Looks good but you havent explained whether the fix truly works or not with regards to bed flexing. I really like it and seems sound in mind by hitting both ends of the support for the bed.
@RVSite2Sight

It worked really well. However, since then, I removed it and installed a fifth wheel hitch for my new Reflection 337rls.

I actually have my 5th wheel attached to the truck with this in place without any issues and even towed my 5th wheel this past weekend a few miles. I followed your setup and purchased a 5250 3/8 piece of aluminum plating and basically did the same setup even with the extra notch I didn't need. Oops. I like how mine turned out, but think I too will put he extra 3 bolts into it. Just curious, were you able to /did you still use there angle iron underneath?? Definitely a ROBUST fix to their bed flexing issue, and I did also replace the original bolts with 3/8" longer to accommodate the extra thickness of the plate. Mine I mounted 90 degree turned to get it to tuck under the wall of my bed @@RVSite2Sight

Thanks, been trying to explain how to do this to my husband. My only addition is I want an electric winch added. That'd make my life easier. I might have to pay someone to do this for me. It wasn't his idea, so you know how that goes.

Hey, Tim. It's a 2007, 6.0 Powerstroke Diesel Lariet. It's a little rusty underneath, but the original paint finish on the body. My wife and I love it! I just pulled my 10,000 pound camper through the mountains near Blowing Rock, NC with no struggle at all. We camped at New River State Park. Unfortunately, I have lost some of my video footage, or I would have done a video on it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
