You gotta love those Westlake tires. We had one blowout on an interstate in South Carolina a couple of years ago. Never changed a tire on our Grand Design Imagine before that, but figured it out and continued on the journey. Once we were back home, we replaced all of them.
Most of the time when I hear or see blown RV tires that aren't due to damage, it's related to not religiously checking and maintaining the recommended tire pressure or running tires for longer than 5 years. Even if you only put 100 miles a year on them, they still need to be replaced after 5. Even Michelin recommends replacement every 5 years. RV manufacturers like to use the lowest load rating tire they can to be legal, unless it's on a high end unit. I like to go up a rating or two at replacement time because you get a more durable tire. Glad that the only collateral damage was the fender! Have fun out there and thanks for sharing your story!
Hi Stephen. I actually ran mine at 65psi for three years, but I thought since the cold pressure was recommended at 80psi, I would give it a try. Unfortunately, both blew during the first two short trips (less than 100 miles). The quality is just simply horrible.
Steve, on one of our trips to the Outer Banks we had two blow outs, one on the way there (got a spare at a local tire dealer) and one on the way home. After getting home found the third original tire with a broken belt. All tires had less than 1000 miles on them I was meticulous about checking tire pressure. They were not the same manufacture as yours but still made in china. After weighing the camper I decided to upgrade axles and switched to load range E tires. No worries now. Very disappointed in the axle/tire choices by the manufacture but I knew upfront how they were skimping.
Hi Eric. The same company made light truck tires under the brands Westlake, Compass and YKS. There were 255,000 of those recalled.. I hope you didn't have any damage. I think AAA may rethink their policy with me in the future. LOL!
I have the same 2019 rv that came with the West Lakes. I ran those for the first year but replaced all 4 after that, I also added TST507 tire monitoring system that has likely same me money and headaches. One previous trip as I was pulling out of the campground the alarm went off; I had topped the tires off just before I left. I pulled over and again topped off that tire. A couple miles down the road the alarm went off again. I checked the tire pressure with two different tire gauges and both showed low pressure. Changed the tire and made it back home. Took the tire to the shop and we couldn`t find the leak but might have been leaking under the load. I just went ahead and purchased a new tir and will try that on utility trailer.
Hey Captain! Yes, I am happy to get rid of the Westlakes. I am thinking about getting a tire pressure monitor, but unfortunately with the Westlakes, all your would get would be 80 to 0 in one second!
That is why I only run TransEagle ST tires off of Amazon. The 12 ply tires are 1 inch thick sidewalls. 8 to 14 ply tires are available. Most manufacturers put the wrong ply tires on the trailer. It's a simple math but they just cheap out. Stay safe.
We just bought our new RV on September 5th. 2024 Left the dealership got 50 miles down the road and the west lake tire blew. We didn’t even feel it. Another vehicle flagged us down. We stopped and the Rt front tire of the RV unit was shredded. It torn up our fender and lower entry step brace was bent 😡4 days in and no return call from the tire department that handles the warranty 😡
The Westlakes are horrible. I bought four new tires, and since have sold the unit. I now have a 2024 Grand Design Reflection 337 fifth wheel with Goodyear Endurance tires. Hopefully, these will last. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good video most likely the reason they bought these tires was they most likely bought train cars full these and if you get 10-20 % of each tire then they’re is the answer
Hey Tex! Great to hear from you again. Unfortunately, we have become addicted to China's products because of the price. Unfortunately, the quality is terrible on most things.
