Harbor Freight's Tasmanian Devil: the 52cc Auger PowerHead

Today I take an in-depth look at Harbor Freight's 52cc Auger PowerHead with 6-inch bit (Item# 63022). I'm very pleased with the unit so far. However, warranty is only 90 days and I hope it holds up--at this point I have no reason not to believe that it will.
I paid $160 before tax and shipping.

This thing is great. I never knew these things existed until today I got the flier from Harbor Freight. All these years I suffered digging manually with a shovel the hard as rock dirt here in Southern California, and not a good job of it. Now I know what to use when I need to dig a hole in order to plant some trees.

I just bored 13 post holes 2-feet deep in compacted bank run gravel and it handled it like a champ. Can't imaging having to use a post hole digger like I used to.

I ended up getting the HD Powermate and it worked great in this Georgia clay/dirt!!! Didn't have any trouble getting through any soil and it even pulled up 4" and smaller rocks with no problem.
@Vicos

Based on my experience with my new tiller, PowerMate seems to make good products. Good to have someone out there doing since the old American favorites -- like Murray, MTD, Snapper, and Cub Cadet -- went the all profits, low quality route, IMO.

The reason for keeping a full tank of fuel for storage is for the reason you mentioned (preventing water condensation in the tank). That is the reason a fuel stabilizer is recommended. A fuel stabilizer, like Sta-Bil, will keep the gasoline from gumming up the fuel lines and carb. Fuel can be stored in excess of 1 year using Sta-Bil.

You may have an easier time if you raise it up about every 8 inches of depth. This helps clear the loose dirt in the auger.

Oh how I envy you guys that have soil easy enough to dig through you can use one of these! On my property here in Colorado I get down 4 inches and hit solid sandstone. I had to rent a jackhammer to dig the rest of the way as even the breaker bar was bouncing off of it.

Looks like it runs well, but something tells me it would have a hell of a time in North Jersey, where there’s packed rock in the ground
@FishFind3000
@FishFind3000 7 лет назад
Only thing I don't like is that it's a pain to start since there's no decompression valve. And that the trigger is out in the open so when you want to go for max depth you will be pinning the trigger at full throttle so hope you don't bind up and have it run away.
@pipeboy98
@pipeboy98 7 лет назад
ever since the ethanol ate the inside of my good stihl chainsaw, I don't buy it for anything small motor driven. the lawnmowers, weed whippers, chainsaws, log splitter, ice auger, generator....everything starts on the first or second pull when I put the premium without ethanol in it. I'm not a motor guy, but I fill up the tank and put stabil in the gas and wait to start it up next season. works flawlessly
@Vicos
@Vicos 7 лет назад
Hi pipeboy98, Yep, that is a good strategy. I started using stabilizer in recent years; unfortunately, I didn't use it in the early years. There is one marina around here that sells ethanol-free gas. I gave him a call to see if he would sell it to me. He said sure if he was there and had time, but finished saying, "I'm not a gas station."

I tried harbor freight auger. It dug great, however the exhaust port got red hot inside it, and it started spitting little sparks once hot, and it started popping noises like it was running lean or something. Plus the black hose seal coming out of fuel tank leaked bad. Conclusion, ticking time bomb.

I was given one of these by a friend who got frustrated trying to make post holes in his yard. It was too late for him to take it back and I had the handy Bobcat auger and bits. Believe it or not this thing ended up as a gas powered drill for fence work. It is totally useless as you said for drilling post holes in coral rock.

I have one as well. It's a. East. When you need to dig any holes and especially in clay. It works best with two people one on each handle and put some down pressure and it will dig great in hard soil like solid clay.

As far as the first thing, you'll have to thank the folks over at Saturday Night Live for glorifying and forever embedding that phrase in my head through many, many episodes of the lifting guys, and Arnie of course. I no longer use it. Your suggestion makes sense in theory, however in practice, the feedback from the machine as it was digging indicated to me that the majority of the work it was doing was in trying to break through the hard earth it was encountering, not as much trying to lift the dirt it had already broken loose. The soil near the house is compacted clay and the whole house sits on a vein of bank run gravel, plus this is where all of the construction vehicles moved about. Not sure if I showed the area where I dug the holes for the new garden, but that is several feet of bank run gravel that was compacted by a tamping roller, the size they use to build highways...very compacted. The house was shaking when they were packing the pad. The machine had some problems in a few spots, but it eventually broke through and gave me nice 2-feet deep holes. Appreciate you watching and providing feedback. If I get back to future videos, I'll be sure to improve over this one :)

03:09 Have noticed a lot of the user manuals from that part of the world don't translate too well. Is it possible that the Manuel was suppose to read "Run the unit for 15 - 20 mins every such an such weeks or months"??? Not every 15 - 20 mins....just saying. I know its for building fences but can you dig under a sidewalk with that thing? Or will it shutoff?? Can you lay it on its side to tunnel under a slab??? Great video and great review.

@Vicos
@Vicos 7 лет назад
Hi Jeff. I didn't see any extension available. I just dug a bunch of holes for a garden fence and I easily got down 24+ inches. For a french drain, depending on how big it is, might want to look at renting a small excavator.

Good review. How close to an obstruction can you drill? I will be using it to set some posts for a retaining wall.
@Vicos
@Vicos 6 лет назад
I can't really give you a good answer. The top end is pretty compact, so... Just beware that if you have hard material to penetrate, the bit is going to wander a bit before it penetrates. Had this issue trying to bore thru compacted bank run gravel.
@briantreacy1171
@briantreacy1171 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. Could you share the measurement from the center of the shaft to the outside of the frame? This will give me an idea ( along with the wandering).
@briantreacy1171
@briantreacy1171 6 лет назад
I went to AF to measure and it is about 6" from the center of the shaft . I ended up buying one but with about 8" clearance to the embankment I end up getting beat up with every root or rock I hit. Also, the muffler is facing the embankment so there is limited airflow to clear the smoke. 4 down, 11 to go.

It's a 6-inch auger, not 4-inch. But, in any case, you can't really do what you suggest with good results, plus you might break something. Better to buy a machine with the auger size you need. I have seen a few units with 8-inch augers.
