In this video we check out Cen-Tech's new Amp Clamp only to realize it doesn't do DC Current (the main reason I bought it) and that it makes our CM300 from the previous video out to be inaccurate in addition to being inconsistent. Fwiw, the old, red, freebie meter I had was always consistent and always repeated...maybe we got a lemon in the previous video, but I certainly expected better.
CLIFF NOTES AND PRE-RELEASE UPDATES:
*In a rushed purchase we completely missed the fact that the clamp meter does not do DC Current! That 100% killed my intentions with this tool. The good news, this meter has a home AND we have another video to showcase what my plans for this tool actually were, by way of the proper tool.
*I also misspoke about the clamp meter not doing audible continuity...it will, you just have to hunt between (3) modes to get there.
*The CM300 is good for audible continuity, but has continued to be off significantly vs my Fluke at work and fails to consistently repeat the same reading.
Would have liked to re-do this video, especially since we didn't even clamp anything AC, but I just don't have the time. This is a pretty decent meter and for $5, I would recommend buying it, over the fixed multimeter from the previous video as you will gain an amp clamp and this one performs with consistent repeatability.

--As we continued testing, we saw the CM300 was the only meter to fluctuate, and often times significantly
@17:49 Backlight Showcase
@17:58 Continuity Test
-No audible continuity...would have loved to have that feature
(As mentioned up top, you just have to mode hunt to get to audible continuity)
@19:00 NCV Usage
-Better for the unknown than what you are familiar with...good safety feature regardless
@19:30 Missed Opportunity
-I thought this would auto range down and handle 12V automotive stuff, will have to go a different route for that, but this is a nice addition for household and shop stuff
@21:15 More Meter Testing
-I played around after the video and confirmed everything...the little CM300 varies a lot from one reading to another...just not consistent enough to trust
-Will use the CM300 with a suspicious mind. Like the form factor, ergonomics, aesthetics, and features, but it is not consistent, or accurate enough to be comfortable with
@28:20 Anyone with the Amp Clamp?
@29:45 We Need a Mid-Tier Option
-Reasonably priced, accurate and consistent, durable, feature rich
@32:15 Your Thoughts
-Line between cheap and expensive
@33:40 Conclusion
@34:20 Test Lead Bonus
-Always forget about the caps...just not use to them

When checking Continuity on the Cen-Tech clamp. I think you have to hit the “M” mode button until you see the audible signal so you can hear the beep

Thanks for the budget DMM overview. 👍 I guess for the price, it's hard to beat. When I'm doing higher current/voltage stuff (cat III to IV) I tend to stick with Fluke for safety first, but also accuracy. However, it's good to have some knock arounds in the garage or in the car when traveling as part of a small kit. I often use a clamp around the alternator cable, so DC current is handy for me. But like I always say, I am strictly a DIY'er and when I need some deeper maintenance, I aways default to trusted and trained technicians.

I work in chemical research.. Our pH meters are the same way.. 3 pH meters ..3 different readings...😅

Haha, sounds about right! The blue multimeter from the previous HF haul is at work, but that thing is all over the place reading wise...This one (the clamp) is actually pretty consistent...I have it in the trunk of the Challenger.

I love the Ames 75 dollar meter. Honestly much better than any old Fluke meters- I had an old 87 and it is more accurate and the resistance measurements go up significantly higher. As a commercial/industrial electrician I use it at work all the time- a lot of guys scoff at it but if they have to borrow it they always come back impressed.

Nice! I probably should have gone that route. When I bought these a few months ago, they had just hit the stores. I was in a hurry and assumed the clamp meter would handle DC. It has been pretty good as a multimeter, but the standard one has been a let down in terms of voltage readings. I've only heard good things about Ames. I have been at a dead end for months trying to get case screws for (2) of our old Flukes...they both have the rubber boot, but one of them has a sweet spot and if you aren't holding it there, you don't have good contact with the battery. I'm assuming the calibration place "lost" them and just assumed no one would know with the boot technically holding the back cover in place.

The UT210E would be my choice for parasitic draw measurement via DC clamp. It's popular on youtube as well.

That literally showed up in my mailbox today, lol. Glad you've heard good things about it. I knew this was new and just kind of grabbed it assuming it would do DC...my mistake. I do like it otherwise, but it is used as a standard multimeter 90% of the time.
