Follow up is - pride of ownership varies depending on the individual person. Some just don't care. I'd much rather spend $20 - 25 on a pair of American Made pliers than save the money on a pair of cheaper Chinese pliers and then spend the remainder on a McDonalds meal that is unhealthy and be with me only for a few hours! lol

Was in Harbor Freight two days ago. After looking at many of the Quinn & Doyle Needle Nose plier line up I saw too many defects to interest me in purchasing either one. Misaligned tips, jaws of Needle Nose two different dimensions, poor grinding of the working edges, handles that squeezed together too easily, over all poor quality. I suppose that they would get a job done but I won't own those type of low quality! Looked at Snap-0n and while their quality was superb - their prices were CRAZY! I wound up with buying a few Channel Lock versions and two Knipex versions. YES - more expensive but they are as near perfect as one can get in a hand tool.

Those orange Pittsburgh pliers suck, not even useable for anything even slightly resistant. Doyle and Quinn work well

Quinn diagnols great bang for the buck.. seem to stay Sharp relatively longer than comparably priced brands,or even stuff twice the price..

I had both Quinn and Doyle and I have to say that I preferred the Quinn not just because I love royal blue lol but mainly because they were more affordable and performed the same as the Doyle. Even when I would lend my tools to my coworker who favored kobalt he was impressed by the quality. I ended selling my Doyle's to a co-worker except the diagonal cutters which I gave to my wife for crafting.

Yeah whatever, I have the same setup. Channellock at home, Quinn and plenty of Pittsburgh in the truck. Good stuff. While the Doyle may be nice, I agree completely that if you're willing to spend that much then a few dollars more gets you Channellock. Doyle is a little too pricey for a new (foreign) brand.

Better I'd say. I recently had to return 3 pairs of Klein's due to floppy handles, gapped and misaligned blades. No issue with the Doyle's.

I bought a set of Quin 3 / 8" socket set in SAE and Metric and they are made in Taiwan. I saw a torque test on a Quinn 1 / 4" ratchet and it broke at 72 ft lbs, where the Pittsburgh broke at 52 ft lbs, I was pretty impressed and I don't remember the name of the 3rd Tool but it was an apparently higher end and it broke at 78 ft lbs.

I bought a pair of slipjoints,I use Channel locks because even Craftsman or other brands feel like junk in my hand,like if I use these I'm gonna tear something up either the pliers or whatever I'm working on,however I will say the Doyles actually feel nice especially for a 6 dollar pair of pliers,kinda shocked actually
@mdlee52
@mdlee52 6 лет назад
I've already got so many different pairs of slip joints I can hardly justify buying more, but maybe when my orange handled Pittsburgh slip joints give out I'll take them into Harbor Freight and see what I can warranty them for.

I gotta agree with your assessment on Quinn vs Doyle vs Channelock. I bought a pair of the Doyle needlenose pliers a while back out of curiosity, and they are great. Straight and tight, I really like them. But next time I'll save the money and buy Quinn, or spend a couple more bucks and buy the Channelocks. The same can be said for several of HF's new brands. Hercules for example, for a few more dollars you can get a Milwaukee or Dewalt. I have no idea if I will be able to buy a replacement Hercules 18v battery 5 years down the road, but I know I will be able to find a battery for a Milwaukee or Dewalt.

Air quality level and the future set of many of their tools is improving all of the time. If you are happy with what you have, then you have no need to go to Harbor Freight. But if you're looking for some increasingly nice stuff for a very low price it would probably be good to check them out. Be sure to text me when you put the video out, I don't want to miss it!
@Marcel_Germann

Sometimes reliability is more important than the price. The tools you use in your car for example. If your car fails and you stand on the side of the road, lifetime warranty for failed tools is a nice thing, but a functional tool would be much nicer. You're still stranded, with a broken tool and a broken car.
@mdlee52
@mdlee52 6 лет назад
And that's why I upgraded to this stuff, it's much better and definitely reliable.

Dollars a wrench it was to good a deal to pass up on, turns out i really like them. At 15. Dollars for a 5pc set I just couldn't pass it up, the new quin look great at least new to me

Could you explain the origin and meaning of "jump the shark"?
@mdlee52
@mdlee52 6 лет назад
It's a reference from the TV show Happy Days. At some point in the show, Fonzie is water skiing and he encounters a shark. He jumps the shark. People who followed that show said that it's totally went downhill after that scene. Jumping the Shark means you are over-reaching.

The major difference between the Channellock & the Doyle is the steel that they are made from. The Doyle is nowhere near the quality of the American made Channellock, the Doyle will rust so much quicker because the steel is a cheap sand carbon steel and is not as hard and pure as the Channellock which uses a much better quality forged steel.

Learned the hard way to never buy cheap stuff for emergencies. Thats when you need the most dependable.
@psdaengr911

HF's fit and finish have improved compared to their predecessors.. The materials have not. Cutting edges on the Doyle and Quinn might be better formed and aligned initially than the Pittsburg, but I don't expect them to last. They are still cheap tools. The production machinery may be better but the alloy used hasn't changed and the pieces aren't hardened after grinding. I can see the uneven wear on the new diagonals already. My 40-year-old Diamond diagonals' cutting edges look like new. For occasional use, I'd recommend Quinn hand tools, but for heavy use, the extra cost of Doyle buys better quality (especially with a 20% off coupon) and is a better deal than Channellock, because of the ease of warranty replacement. HF will replace a broken or worn out with a walk in. Channellock doesn't cover wear, and requires sending a tool in question, returned prepaid for inspection. Unless strapped for cash, I'd recommend that the most frequently used hand tools bought from HF be Pittsburg Pro or Doyle. "Better" at HF is directly related to the tool prices. HF brand names are house brands, and as such, there is no identifiable manufacturer behind them. When you see several part numbers in a HF ad for the "same" tool, those aren't just different production runs; they are from different factories. In China and Taiwan, labor is relatively less expensive, materials are not. In any simple hand tool with moving parts the alloys used, whether that components are cast, forged or sintered determines how the material will hold up when those parts are rubbed against each other or the materials that they are used on. A pliers with fully polished chrome plating over the individual parts before assembly will withstand rubbing between those parts better than one that is plated or just polished after assembly. Cutting edges of a forged tool steel alloy will hold up better that a simple carbon steel alloy with only enough vanadium added to allow it to be put on the packaging.

P Schmied you say that and I can fully understand and I see your point however have you tried these Quinn pliers yet? A lot of people keep on talking about Klein tools but I’m telling you through my experience that they will hold up in a professional environment. Try them out and you might be surprised!
@psdaengr911
@psdaengr911 6 лет назад
Todd Osterhout: I've bought them. I've used them the Doyle and major brands. I've seen the gripping surfaces of the Quinn needle nose pliers wear to ineffectiveness in light industrial use. The Doyle are much better, but I've seen their cutting edges chip and dull. To me that says that the quality of the materials, not fit and finish is the life limiting factor. The Quinn tools would be ok for light use but aren't durable reliable enough for heavy or sustained use without stocking spares. I'll buy more Doyle, instead of Channellock because HF is 15 minutes away. HF's cashier will process a replacement in under 5 minutes. A warranty exchange with ChannelLoc, while less frequent, takes days, costs money up front and more time without the tool. It is a huge PITA. Warranty process convenience is why many folks stuck with declining quality Craftsman tools as long as they did.

I use the Valvoline Max Life after doing some research and for 23 dollars a jug I'm convinced you won't find a better oil.Go to Bobistheoilguy and there's all kinds of useful information on oil.Any synthetic with a premium filter will give your vehicle long life.Don't get hung up on brands and scientific things,just make sure your changing it before the oil and additives are spent.There's an online place called Blackstone labs that will send you a container for your oil,you send them a sample and they'll tell you how much life is left in your oil at the mileage intervals your doing.Additives are a waste ,just keep your oil changed.

Man I've been using these pliers for about 2 weeks now and I feel like I'm stealing from harbor freight. Bought the diagonal cutters to replace a channel lock pair that I believe I left somewhere on my truck while I was working on it. Liked them so much I bought the linesman and needle nose. I work in facilities maintenance and use mostly Klein, southwire, knipex, and Irwin hand tools daily...I won't give any of those up for these but it's nice to have a backup set for dirty/greasy jobs or in places where they may get dropped or lost or in my case borrowed, that actually work properly. You are right, next to my other brands I can't really tell a difference in the way they function, only time will tell on the longevity.
