Road trip and review of the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV. As the electric vehicle infrastructure continues to improve, we take the latest EV for a decent cruise up to Mount Panorama at Bathurst, where both Stu and Mark have tasted success over the years in their respective fields. Come along for the ride and see what this conversation-starting EV is like. Like it or not, it certain gets people staring.

Really enjoyable review. The efficiency is excellent. Why anyone would put the 20" wheels on beats me, It really hits the range and does nothing for the ride quality. As for looks I think it grows on you. When form follows function you can't really go wrong.

@@inCARnationAustralia Mine is the Epiq with 20 inch wheels, so the shortest range of the 3. I live on the great dividing range, so lots of hills which affect range. Highway with hills: 100kph 280 to 295 miles 450 to 475 kms. Eco mode 2WD Highway on the flat: 100kph between 315 to 350 miles. Eco mode 2WD ,no hvac. When planning I work on 250miles on the highway. In my city we always use a trip to Sydney to gauge range in a petrol car which will need one petrol stop. The Ioniq 6 will need 1 charge stop, so that’s as good as an equivalent petrol car. The car is better than expected, I look for excuses to drive it. I hope an update will remove the bongs, but it’s training me like a cat to get use to them. I’m resisting. Hope this helps.

The Tesla base model in Canada is the same price as the base RWD Ioniq 6 (big batt) and financing is better for the Hyundai. That being said, if you get the AWD Ioniq 6 with 18" wheels you get tons of performance and a range that seems to equal that of the RWD Ioniq. Our 18" AWD I6 here in Canada is easily getting 320+ highway and mountain miles along with a combined city/highway north of 350+. It costs 3k more than the base LFP batt RWD Tesla (made in China) and has MUCH better performance and range.
@inCARnationAustralia

That's very interesting. Thanks for sharing. Clearly Hyundai have taken a different strategy here. No wonder they're only expecting sales < 5% of Tesla levels.

To stop the charging, you can lower the charging limit below SOC. The sound alarms for speed limits are EU requirement from 2024. The Australian charging network seems to be abysmal, greetings from Germany.
@Fr.Spicer

One comment. Drag coefficent does not match the Tesla. Though simmilar, the Tesla Model 3 has a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.23. The Ioniq 6 base modle with 18 inch wheels is 0.22 With digital mirrors it is 0.21 With larger wheels it goes down to .24. These small points but they add up to big savings.

Ha, had to laugh about your accent, which sounds alright to me. The nav lady lives in Toowoomba ( grew up in Mackay ) and was selected in the US for her easy to understand accent. Yep, surprised me too. My Ioniq 6 Epiq is brilliant, better than expected.
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Год назад
That's really interesting about the nav lady. It's funny how, when she can't understand me, she asked me to put the window up even though she should have known it was already up (as she has the power to open and close it). For some cathartic payback I'd just like to ring her up and say 'command not understood' to whatever she says.

@@inCARnationAustralia I never use voice commands even on the picture phone. So I tried her out on the windows and it worked perfectly. Then I tried a very hard to find private airfield in the country and she got it straight away, but I think you need to use your sexy voice.

Hi Stu and Mark. Always enjoy your videos. This is a another great one. You’ve driven the GV60 too. Which one do you prefer or buy ? Steve
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Год назад
Hi Steve. Stu here. I much preferred the GV60 because it only comes in AWD with mega grunt and I loved that Hanuama Mint colour. But it's in a completely different price bracket. $117k versus $76k on the road. Value for money wise, the IONIQ 6 is smarter. But the GV60 was very special, and made you as the driver feel special too, with significantly better user interface even though it had basically the same display screens. We are fans of sedans rather than SUVs, but that was one very special SUV. Even though the 'magic sphere' was an eye-rollingly chintzy gimmick, I still laughed.

@stevegrice7350 Год назад
@@inCARnationAustralia Hi Stu - thanks for your thoughts. I am biased as I have a GV 60 (Advanced) - 9 months and 17k later - really happy. You nailed it in your comments on the Ionic 6 - effortless. So true. Watching you and Mark up at Bathurst, it looked great - the only thing missing was the engine note. But you are also right - 90% of the time using your car you want performance, quietness, and no fuss - I honestly believe electric cars make you feel more relaxed due to lack of vibration and noise - but this is not everyone's cup of tea. Yes the GV is quite a bit more expensive than the Ionic 6 but perhaps not in the top trim of the Ionic 6 ? . - I am lucky I can run mine thorough my business. Quick side note - my monthly payments on the GV60 are $300 more a month than my previous Lexus NX300 - BUT when I had the Lexus I was spending over $300-$350 a month on fuel - so I'm probably ahead in the GV60 ! On a quick note - hope you go through the electrification of the 928 - I'd love to know how that video you showed of the Tesla with the V8 growl was done ! And your video tricks are great- how did you do the yellow Mustang hand pick up thing ? And the restyling of the Ionic 6 removing the 2nd spoiler and changing the wheels, and same colouring the lower sill - agree - it looks much better ! A car I'd like you and Mark to try - an oddball choice - but I kinda like it - is the new Ora Cat - maybe a good city car ? I think it looks pretty funky. Cheap but hopefully cheerful and a bit of fun. (A bit like the MGZS the older folk had on your trip to Bathurst). Keep up the great work. Steve

8:51 - lane keeping is a bit of a nuisance but really just an 'electronic vibraline'. To really stay in the lane on long drives on freeways and most main roads, hit the half-steering wheel button on the left of the wheel - Lane Following. It just WORKS! I should not have to tell you guys this

Consider a smiles per mile (km) score. While many EVs are now looking a sensible economic & comfort choice, I still don’t see much fun for enthusiast drivers. Maybe we need a sensible car, and a fun ICE car just for times that suit

@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Год назад
I found it clunky to use when setting a destination, but the HUD and turn instructions good. As I remember, it wasn't aware of Tesla charging locations that supported non-Tesla charging but I could be wrong about that. The car supports Apple Carplay and Android Auto although we didn't test it. So one would hope using Google or Apple maps would give more traffic-aware functionality on the centre screens. And of course apps like Plugshare, A Better Route Planner, etc.

Thanks for the video, I liked the laidback review. Just as an FYI, Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto are not included with any model of the Ioniq 6. They only work via the USB port next to the wireless charging dock. Also, The Tesla Model 3 doesn't have the features the Ioniq 6 comes with as standard - even on the base model. To get them close-to-par it would be at least $10k extra on the Tesla (I'm ignoring the pipe-dream that is auto-pilot). The Tesla is still slightly cheaper, but the design decisions they made are a bit of a turn-off personally - I only just recently learnt how to drive (at 46) and the idea of not having my speed right in front of me is frankly terrifying.
