Richard, I want to send you my sincerest thank you for this video. This is the first time I have EVER commented on a RU-vid video, and this tutorial is now the reason why. My external hard drive suddenly stopped mounting on my laptop (and a backup laptop too). My whole life from 2016 to now was on it, and the thought of losing it all sent me into a depressed tailspin. So much so that it was literally making me nauseous. I tried downloading recovery software, which was scanning the hard drive for hours, yet found nothing. I was at a complete loss for what to do so searched on RU-vid and found this video. Following your tutorial fixed the problem completely and I could not be happier. You do not know how grateful I am for you posting this. Thank you very much. I hope you have a great rest of 2021.

Glad you got it sorted. You should ALWAYS have a backup of your hard drives. Especially stuff that we care about and never want to loose. It sucks because you have to buy 2 hard drives for the use of one but it is always best to have a mirror of your hard drives

Richard. I love you. I have called so many experts, Apple 2x, etc, plus a million other things and your video got my drive to mount . PRAISE BE TO YOU. I CANNOT THANK YOU ENUF. I was skeptical at first, especially with the comments seeming that it's too good to be true. My hard drive stopped mounting two days ago but wow, after doing this it's all mounted and I can access all of my files now!! Thank you so much Richard :)

I really need some help. After the first bit when I type in disk until list it doesn't let me put any more commands? Why is that? Like the bit where it should say macbook pro:~....

Thanks a ton. Hard drive that disconnected by accident (pulled out) would not mount. I went to first aid as you suggest and saw it there, it gave me hope, and it fixed it. As an aside, it would not mount but it was gurgling (working) it's an older HDD. I guess it was trying to repair itself. So for anyone who this happens to, don't despair, let that gurgling work out. That, plus first aid in disc utility will mount it. Sometimes 10 minutes later.

U ARE LEGEND. IT WORKS. LACIE DRIVES. I have used this twice now. LaCie drive stopped mounting when my mac book pro died unexpectedly. for lacie drives you must input ExFAT instead of hfs. thank u again

Help needed! My friend has an iMac 2013 and after a power failure it doesn’t boot, after running disk utility it reports the HDD is unformatted and smart error. I can’t run First Aid even if I select the disc, the disc also report a size of 4.14GB, actual size is 1TB. Tried to install Homebrew and testdisk from the Terminal to recover the partition but it throws up a syntax error. Can I run testdisk from a USB drive? Or anything else I can do to recover the partition?

Hi Richard, thank you for your video. I have an APFS SSD and I have been able to get the end as shown your video (using APFS instead of HFS). It also shows that the external ssd has been mounted properly as shown in your video. However, the drive still does not show up on the Finder.

However, the drive still does not show up on the Finder or in Disc utilities.

Thanks for the help, (it didn't work for me, I'm gonna try again in recovery and reformat my drive), but I jsut wanted to suggest saying what you write in terminal rather than saying what you are not writing example- you said: disk utility but you wrote: diskutil

Thanks man. I tried this but no joy. The same external hard drive works on my old mac but wont show up on the new mac. Tried the force mount via terminal but no success. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Might be the partition type different and if thats the case, you will need to use old mac os, transfer the data from ext hdd to any other external or internet (depends on data) move it and then you will need to format that external drive in exFAT and then transfer it back to it, then it should work for both mac os and windows as well.

Just write you’re passcode, it won’t echo but the terminal will process it as if u had written something

Hi Richard I have a Q: after following all steps and last thing I put was sudo fsck_HFS /dev/disk3s2 = it came up saying "Can't open /dev/rdisk3s2: Resource busy" ---- any ideas on how to fix this?

I called a few places but the prices was a few hundred and said they “might be able” to get it back- sometimes when i plug it in i get it to work and then i transfer as much data as i can but like the whole drive is full unfortunately so just taking it little by little :/ I don’t know anything about the codes and stuff in Terminal or Disk Utility (i tried it but didn’t seem to work for me unless i didn’t do everything right) sending you good luck!! & if you figure anything out let me know haha

@@LouisaKristina haha okay, i’ll keep trying. sad thing is, this is a hard drive that i had payed 1800 dollars for because my hard drive i had before this did a similar thing so i paid 1800 dollars to get it fixed but only got like 20% of my stuff back and he gave it to me on this hard drive which is now also not working. i’ve only had this hard drive for 2 months. i have no luck lol.

Hey Richard, a little late to the party after the first step I get a GPT partitioning scheme is required? what does that mean exactly ? Also my PC will open the hard drive but my mac will not, it opens and then says loading on the mac. I would transfer everything but that will take months. any help?

Hi Richard. Have tried the terminal commands you suggest. Am getting _Unable to verify this whole disk: a GUID Partition Table Partitioning Scheme is Required._ Then tried verifying _part_ of the disk: disk2s1, but then it says “A whole disk must be specified”. 🙄 🥴

Hello sir, thank you for the video. My problem is that I have a mojave ssd 1TB drive that I thought I could just plug into a new mac. But while it shows up in the disk utility as greyed out, it does work with the original macbook pro. It seems as if it has been altered from HFS journaled to APFS and won't mount. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If they have data stored already on that drive and it switched formats, you may have lost the data. If you never had anything but trying to mount the drive. Go format the drive back to HFS. RU-vid should have videos if you need help. It is short but write detailed. Please let me know if you need help with anything else.

still having issues with this 1. could you let mw know what i would need to do in order to get the mount point to mount. my error is repairin file system volume is already unmounted performing fsck_exfat-y-x/dev/disk1s1 checking volume checking main boot regionthe voluime could not be verified completely file system check exit code is 1 restoring the original state found as unmounted file system verify or repair failed operation failed... would would be process for this..?

Hi Richard, I loved the explanation. I have a different issue with two of my WD external HDD's. I can't find answers anywhere so maybe you can help me. My HDD's mount fine, and work fine on Windows, but whenever I use them on my iMac, everything is there at first, but after a few minutes of use they turn to '0' bytes and I can't use them or see any files on them. I have to eject the HDD and plug it back in, all the files are there, and then the same thing happens again. Often when I open a folder and go into it, when I click back out of the folder everything disappears. None of the RU-vid videos I've watched answer my problem, so if you can help me, I will be grateful forever :)

What do I do to fix an invalid B-tree node size? at the sudo fsck_HFS ... command the output says: ... **Checking journaled HFS Plus volume. Invalid B-tree node size (3,0) **the volume could not be verified completely
