Great video! Honestly I’m not a fan of big bikes and sand. I am really impressed with how easily I can ride the KLR in slow tight terrain. Keep having fun!

@@SwankyCatProductions I went with Dirt Rack front crash bars but the style that is slightly different than yours. They were an easy install and fell extremely stout with a good finish.

I'm a new rider, put nearly 2,500 miles on my KLR since buying it in August, about 2 weeks ago I took it in sand and it dang near killed me, laid it down twice, I may have hurt some tendons/ligaments in my knee/ankle, going about 100 yards through 6"+ deep sand with the Motoz GPS rear tire and Trailmax Mission front tire was exhausting, I didn't have the knowledge to stand up and lean back to help get across. I'm looking forward to spending a little more time in sand working on my ability to handle it once my leg/ankle is feeling better.

Speaking from experience, the KLR is going to be a pain to learn on. I gained a lot of my off road skills on my gen2 but after I bought a second smaller 250 dual sport, I got a lot better a lot faster. Just take it slow and don't underestimate the difficulty a big bike like the KLR poses in sand and mud.

Thanks for the vid. I laid my klr down about a month ago after getting in some soft sand on the stock tires and sustained a couple minor injuries and a little cosmetic damage to the bike. It only has 500 miles on it. Just ordered some d sports and looking forward to seeing how much better they perform.

The reviews are actually very helpful. A lot of us go through the same motions of heavy RU-vid research before commuting our paychecks to the purchase. Having a verified and trusted person, such ad your self, often drives that decision.

This video is both fun to watch (almost riding along with you "on your handlebars") and very informative. You're a skilled motorcyclist, both riding and maintaining/building your machine. It helps me so much to know what to expect as I tackle some of the same modifications that you have made - on my own new KLR! Those 1-inch lowering brackets look interesting to me.... I put something similar on my 2002 Concours and really liked the extra leg room. Have you actually reinstalled them on your KLR and, if so, did you use the hard mount bolts and collars? I've heard that the foot bracket mounting threads on the KLR are somewhat fragile and susceptible to stripping out. So torque is critical. Also, I've been advised to forget putting a centerstand on the KLR because it would stress the foot mount threads every time the bike is lifted onto the stand. I love the convenience of a centerstand on my street bikes but won't do it on my new KLR. THANKS for your skillful videos!

Tee handles are no longer made in the snap on rruck suppliers . Tusk set are a really nice addition to my box. I'm glad to see another video on the footpeg options. My 22 adventure will be mostly road used and I like the stock ones because I have a KLX300 for the dirt side. Good video though. I think Kawi focused on comfort with the extensive rubber mounting even on the bottom of the seat. Dual engine balancers like the Lancer evo aren't cheap either. PORSCHE 944 used them too. So keep up the good work. Thankyou. B

I was just out today getting a little sideways in dirt, sand, and gravel on my KLR. So much fun sliding (minimally) through the twisties and not just gliding over them. I've got bars coming in the mail, and replacement plastics (for my prior oopsies) since I'm vain. :+ ) Personally I don't mind the soft mounts, the deflection isn't too bad; I will however get spiky pegs, maybe spiky with rubber for the best of both worlds.

Honestly it feels lighter than my gen2 did, more stable too. Certainly not any faster since I think the small increase in HP was more than offset by the extra weight but either way I'm very happy... I do also have a TW and T7 so if I want light or fast I've got options haha.

@@SwankyCatProductions Well if memory serves me the 08' was 50lbs heavier than the 06'. Of course the 08' model was just a test platform for the current one. I love my 06' and currently planning on tackling the T.W.A.T trail this fall. Which in doing so should put my steed over the 50k mile mark. It's my "Swiss army commuter". Like you I have an 03' kx250 for tackling the naughty stuff and an 06' royal star venture for the LONG hauls.

@@SwankyCatProductions honestly..I don't like my gen too much on hwy..That's the problem..It lacks power and its buzzy..Its great for light offroad and bombing dirt roads but higher speeds and long rides it sucks..Ill probably keep it but was thinking about upgrading to an Aprilia tuareg 660 twin or a T7..I'm only 5'9 so in my eyes the big adventure bikes are off the table for me.I know they can be ridden by shorter riders but i like being able to touch the ground.. lol..

@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 2 года назад
The KLR would be a suitable substitute but is certainly no Tenere on the road. KLR is a little easier to ride off road though and isn't something I would ever try to talk someone out of. As long as your expectations are set right it's an awesome bike. If you like the color of the ADV I'd say go for it, otherwise you can get much better accessories from the aftermarket and have to deal with ones not fitting due to the (in my opinion) weak crash protection.

Under 500 views? Fucking should be 50k in no time for the quality. I just installed the same crash bars as you and I just realized I’ll need to take them off to put on the charge port. Do you have a plan to install the doohickey or the thermo bob?
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 2 года назад
Haha thanks man I wish! Yeah... I love the bars other than the fact you need to take them off to get at anything. That was one thing I did like a little more about my old gen2. If I decide to keep the bike past 6,000 miles I might think about doing the doohickey. I've already done the thermobob to hopefully avoid any oil burning (can't say for sure that it will help but seems like a good idea).

I had to remove my Tusk D Sport front tire today on my DR650. It was getting very sketchy with little speed. It started out that I would get wobbles at 65-75mph. Today I started getting them all the way down at 55-60mph. I tried air pressures from 18 to 30 psi. I hated going to the bike shop and over paying for a tire but I had to do something. The rear Tusk is good it’s just loud. Has great grip off road and handles asphalt just fine for my driving.

Yeah I can see the front getting out of hand as it wears. Might be ok on a light bike but not the best on the big bores.

Using the correct method (back to the bike) most people can pick up a lot heavier bike than they would think. I pick my Tenere 700 and old gen2 KLR up all the time. Still a good idea to try before you buy if they'll let you though.
