What's the difference between a victim and a wise person? A victim goes through pain and never moves on from the emotional impact. A wise person goes through the same pain but instead learns the lesson and moves on stronger than before. You have to decide what sort of a person do you want to be. We all make ton of mistakes growing up, believe me. A TON. Some people never learn from it and instead they keep dwelling on the emotional aftermath years after those days get over. They never get wiser. And then there are people that do go through a phase of pain and regret but then soon enough, they build resilience and move on. They learn from the experience. The choice is yours, my friend, as to what sort of a person you'd want to be. Either way, pain is a constant.
No big deal, brother. The way to get rid of old memories is by focusing on making new ones. It's a widely used concept in psychotherapy. If something from the past is keeping you in downward loop, the more you engage with it with the hope to get rid of it, the more importance you give to it (according to how brain interprets). Your brain very quickly equates where your attention goes to what's important. So if you're paying attention to past memories, your brain will deem it to be very important. And so, your brain will then give you more and more depressive memories to play with. Conversely, if you just Acknowledge past as past without trying to control it or avoid it, and instead focus on DOING things every day that adds value to your life, your brain will interpret your new behavioral pattern to be super important. Guess what? Your brain will give you more and more reasons and motivation to focus on the bright side. This is how you rise, brother. It's all about attention and effort.
