With the older versions of Minecraft where you could find a lot at Y 15 from branch mining, I would use an iron pick for the branching tunnels until it broke and use my enchanted pick on any ore i found. Then turned around and started a new tunnel with a new iron pick. I based my distances on how long an iron pick lasted. It was a decent system. Still trying to figure out the best mining methods for 1.18 and newer.

Him talking about the slow falling potion and me who recently beat the dragon after not doing it since before the end cities existed and only bringing a single golden apple (i had armor and weapons but it wasn't op stuff just decent enchanted diamond, I feel pretty proud I was still able to do it without dying all these years later
