Harden Creek Slot Cars LLC Track Review of Tyco Electric Racing's "Racin' Hoppers"

Racin' Hoppers was a 1988 Tyco Electric Racing set. It is reasonably interesting with the track humps and bumps. The cardboard cut-out scenery doubles as track supports. This actually works well. For a set this age, the parts were in very good condition including the cars. Fresh tires on one car added a lot of enjoyment to running the track since the original factory rear tires were dried out and cracked to crud.

Man, I've always wanted this set. I remember going into the toy store and just looking at the box art! Man, those were the days!🥰

Really awesome to see you back! Called you about a month or so ago about getting some controllers. I know you’re covered up something fierce but you took enough time to talk to me about some problems I was having and some really good advice! I’ve actually got one of these kind of sets and I’m going to use it as a separate set just for fun. Really glad you have these cars and told about the problems there in so I can watch out for it.

Thank you so much for posting this. I bought a lot of these very tracks years ago and am finally going to bust them out. As I figured, we gotta do a little work with the wheels, as well as getting those motors warmed up a bit. :)

I remember having that track from Tyco. It was my favorite car track since I was a child. At that time I was 11 years old. I remember getting it for Christmas. Unfortunately, one of the carts did not have the part where it is fixed to the track. It looks like a pen tip. So I could only use one of the carts at a time. A few years ago I saw those new carts sold separately on Ebay. I would have liked it to be bigger so the carts could run at their maximum speed. A pity that cart tracks of this type no longer appear.

I have a collection of these and other Tyco and, spot-on, this line was patterned after the RC lines (Racin' Hoppers, Racin' Quads, Racin' Bandits, and carded Racin' Outlaws -- they made the hopper with belts run on actual belts!) -- these sets are some of the most fun because of the hill tracks: the incline matches a Tyco loop segment, but the "crown" track was use less often, as the chassis must be equipped with the tall version of the pickup shoe on a 440 or 440-wide chassy, or be one of the rare motorcycle/quad/Banshee variations, to not stall at the peak of the crown. Both Turbo Train variations use the tall shoes, the last one being on a 440-wide. Years later, Mattel's Harry Potter Quidditch set used a 440-wide, as did the Jeremy McGrath "sliding" dirt bikes. I've popped lots of new and old bodies on, and popped neodymium magnets in a couple of chassis for a laugh. The Dark Knight tumblers make great hill cars, and the very early dirt bikes run great (that set came a little earlier and had hill and flat variations, including a set of stunt ramps and jumps that lay over the lane). The Disney Cars (movie) sets had some sand track that is completely Tyco native, and one had a sand-to-black transition sections. The Quidditch set has blue track, with all the hills and crowns, and an absolutely bonkers Golden Snitch release mechanism. The Jeremy McGrath set has a darker brown "dirt" color, awesome inner and outer skirts for the curve tracks, a skirted "bump" track and an ignorable jump track (its a repeat from an older Tyco set that doesn't work great with those bikes, and I leave it out). Love these sets! Mattel has used the Tyco tooling long since Tyco went under ... with lane-isolated power and the old style controllers, these sets can still run consistently.

Great to see a new video, Terry. Hope to see more. If you need suggestions, would love to see you put out a bench video or two to put together a monster Viper road racer. Saw the new flexible colored chassis. Look really nice.

Great vid/memories! (I'm jealous of how nice your cardboard set is! 😎) FYI: on *Hopper body removal* - you can totally remove the body. They aren't glued, flattened, or pressed in, just pushed in snugly. 1. You need a tiny pair of flat-tipped pliers 2. Push the front body/springs down just enough so the pin heads stick out 3. Grab the head with pliers and gently twisty motion & pull up (might put a little oil on it if it's stubborn) 4. Repeat for the rear, recommend doing this with a rag or something wrapped around the car while you do so, so you don't lose your pins and springs I -just- repaired 4 of these last night and figured this out, good luck!

I had this set in high school and had a blast playing with it. I still have the cars but am unable to use them on my other tracks, as the pick up shoes are worn and I can't find replacements. I remember my cousin and I playing with this set and listening to Death Angel's Frolic through the park album, I think it was, all of the time.

I remember my track running counter clockwise. So, now Im wondering if my memory is just incorrect or is there a polarity change from the power plugs? Either way, great video for me and many. Nastalgic at the greatest level!

This is the only track I know of with hills. I bought two sets recently just for the hill portions to use in an upcoming diorama. Do you know of any other? and also did you ever try regular type cars on this? [non turbo hoppers]

Have you tried lifelike T car? Might give you a bit more power with standard power supply and good tires. Might be fun…
