In this edition of the Workbench we will look at fixing up Tyco 440x2 cars in several steps or 'stages'. Each stage builds on the previous stage. The 5 stages discussed certainly are not fixed or limited. It is simply to give the hobbyist some basic formulas to target.

Thank you for everything that you do. I have a new passion for this it brings me back to being a kid in the 70's and having my first slot car set. Learning more about this and experimenting with it will keep me interested... thank you!!

Always liked the old school tyco. For some of us old school builders, we still like the challenge of building the old tyco chassis. Nothing like running as good or better with a 40$ tyco setup as to an 80$ Storm with mods👍👍👍 Thanks so much for the video and all the great parts for these chassis😃

Hopped up a 440X2 wide chassis >> Viper 3.5 ohm armature, Viper Pro-8 traction magnets (in low downforce setup) and Gel Claws tires... Racing 87' of track in 5.33 seconds (scale 713 MPH) down to some 6" curves so not all just straight! Power supply 19.5VDC / 3A. All for about $28....

Woo hoo! A new workbench vid! I always look forward to these. Love the idea of making speed demons out of derpy cars. Any chance that Mattel might want to get rid of their slot car tooling since they don't seem to be in the game anymore? Wouldn't that be cool if HCSlots could continue producing Tyco chassis? Mattel probably wants way too much $$$ to sell off their slot car stuff but it would be so cool if HCSlots could do that.

Actually I did contact Mattel about the situation. They don't care to have any meaningful conversation. Money does not appear to make any difference. Big corporations do not care what we care about.

Had a grey widepan (not sure of the arm) I used an indy front cobalt motor and traction magnets (not sure of the stage just bought then off a friend) and a pair of orange foam tires on green wheels to put on the stock axle, sorry can't remember the brand, this was in the late 90's i think. We had an L shipped track in the back of the raceway and it'd just obliterate everything, wasn't fast on the straights, but it'd kill in the corners. This was with a '57 chevy body, no telling how quick it would have been with a vette or viper body

Do I need to keep the little plastic cover that is on the underneath covering the engine? Is it even needed?

I'm wanting to build a 440X2 for strictly drag racing. I have a few 4ohm armatures I would like to use. Will the stock motor magnets be strong enough to push the hotter armature?
@riggenracer
@riggenracer 5 лет назад
You could try our Level 8 poly motor magnets. Gearing after that will be the next challenge. Use the Wizzard pickup shoe springs, 006 motor brush springs and brushes. You might try .007 motor brush springs after the .006. I've found Tycos using factory brush barrels don't like stiff brush springs. Some guys put .008s or .009s in and the cars run slower. Also in the web cart I have the Slottech Super Tough gears. 8/21 or 8/22 could work depending on your track length. Rear silicon sponge tires most likely will run better that slip-ons .

Will these magnet upgrades work on a tyco magnum? I have a couple with the Indy bodies. Super fun to run. Thanks and great work as usual!
@riggenracer
@riggenracer 5 лет назад
The 440 Magnum has a bar style traction magnet. So x2 style traction magnets will not work. Very few vendors ever did hop up bar magnets for a Magnum. Every once in a while one or two may surface on ebay. But they do not appear to be a standard stock item from anyone.

I don't think there is any way humanly possible to explain this more clearly, thank you. Variety is the spice for me personally, and I most definitely enjoy the varied degrees of performance related to Tycos, and other makes/models as well. I like the method of staging too because by saying which stage you are describing it communicates the basic mods done and the realm in which it operates. As always, thank you for taking the time and effort to go to this degree. NURZRACHIT

Awesome video Sir, What size rear tires would you use on these type of set ups. TYIA- JC

How about pinning the pickup tabs & rear axle? Some screws in the rear bulkheads? Brass bushings? Tycos take a lot of work! That is why your new Viper chassis is better. Buy one with a pinned rear, snap the car together and go! I don’t have the patience for a Tyco.

Do you find stage 1 to make the stock arm run hot? I had to run stock rears with the pro 8 traction mags or the car got 150 degrees with super tires.

Also reverse zapping the traction mags is a great free modification

Who owns the patent for the TYCO chassis?
@riggenracer

There is no patent in place for Tyco. Tyco sold out to Mattel years ago and Mattel folded up HO slot cars 4 or 5 ears ago.

If you would put links to these parts in the description you could sell them. If you don't sell them then you could make a little money from affiliate links to Amazon or other sellers.
