Teardown video is such a lifesaver for us guys that wind up with boxes of parts from somebody else's abandoned projects. Now I can see a couple bits I'm still missing, and I have a clue what I'm looking for. Thanks mate!
You'll see it in upcoming videos Samsung Galaxy Note 5 of all things. Works with my lighting, good color, no focusing issues, plenty of zoom and an external mic jack so great audio and uploads wireless to my laptop for editing.
Your scribes and dovetail cutters have done very well - deservedly. The freedom on those dogs seemed real critical.... whole thing is a clever design. Nice result from the tweaks. The collets opening so well could probably be useful to take some metric sizes... the 1/4 looks like it could close down for a 6mm.
That was fun. The wife growled that I needed to load dishwasher. I responded- I'm helping Randy wait a minute. House temp dropped a few degrees and eerie silence fell over the house. Good work Randy. Nice to watch the pile of punches grow and change as you went along. So it isn't just at my shop the pile of tools grows on simple jobs. _Dan_
Pierre, Phil and Robert will be happy to see their hammer has been well used. Neat to see how collet closers work. You must be getting frustrated with having to fix every one of them though.
I really should make use of my collet set up, but I don't know, might be more trouble than it's worth for me. Excellent video as always, and as always, thanks.
Hit it a lick, Harder, Harder! LOL - I save my wife's peanut butter jars to use in the shop for small items. Bouillon cube jars work great also.. LOL - I love the Hard Arkansas stones. - Repairs are always needed, being able to do your own repairs, is wonderful. - My left wrist is in a cast, but I was still able, using a come-along and 5/8" round bar, to lift my lathe off the furniture dollies and put it in position today by myself. It felt good to get that done. Next is to position the Burke MVN, that's Mondays job. - I sent an email about shipping cost for 3 items. Love the 'stache, I had to trim mine for surgery, 2 weeks ago.
Got my dovetail cutter and scribe today. Beautiful tools, almost hate to use the dovetail cutter. You sir are a Machinist, and a Gentleman!! Real men of Honor are fewer and farther between these days, glad to know you.
Randy you get that medical "examination" table... now it has big electrical things mounted too it.. you aren't secretly Dr. Frankenstein are you? LOL. Btw, beautiful work!
Randy, I know this is an old video but around 35 mins you mention spring washers for the closer gimbal saying you replaced them .. I've been looking for those .. do you have a lead on part number or where you may have bought yours in what size / strength / thickness? thanks!
Randy, i have a Spirit capstan lathe. A very nice Italian machine. When i bough mine the collet closer was sticking. Mine was due to rust from soluble oil drying out. It was never cleaned or lubed on a regular basis. Grrr One thing i have found is to lube every month with thin synthetic oil. The additives in the oil stay on the parts and they work real sweet. Keep the vids coming as i look forward to my weekly dose of tool porn. :-)
My machine was supplied new to a school, where i bought it from. I don't think it was ever lubed, must have been a bad teacher. lol Its disheartening when you buy a machine and it does not work as it should and you have to do a lot of work to make it work properly. So i'm glad to see yours is fixed and running good. i use 10/40 synthetic oil. I usually have a can or two around as its used in the motorbikes.
I have a DV-59 in very good condition but I have belt noise. I noticed your Hardinge is extremely quit. Any hints that aren't in my Hardinge manual? I'm guessing belt tension is the issue but I'm not sure how to get it right.
