A live, semi-improvised synth jam performed entirely on hardware.
The quest for a live setup continues. My last setup was versatile and powerful, but felt too big and complicated for actually setting up in a live venue. (Though who knows, maybe I'll go back to it!) As such, I decided to strip things down to the essentials, and try a few new ideas.
The essentials: The Octatrack and Minitaur. The Octatrack gives me stereo sample playing/mangling with time-stretch, eight separate tracks of sequencing for other hardware, a mixer for other audio in, effects, and performance macros (scenes). The Minitaur gives me the bass sound; there's just nothing else that can compare, let alone in such a compact package.
The new ideas: The Audiothingies Micromonsta 2 and eurorack drums. The Micromonsta 2 is a bitimbral digital synth with a tiny footprint, lots of options on filter and modulation, effects, and more. I must confess, though, that I struggled to make a sound I loved with it on the first pass, though it may just require some further exploration. The eurorack drum skiff is a modification of the setup I used for two live albums this year, repurposed exclusively for drum sounds. It's got plenty of hands-on control, glitchiness I can tweak, and a fast sequencer. However, it took more fussing than I'd like to get it set up where I wanted it. Ultimately I'm not sure if either the Micromonsta 2 or eurorack drums will stick around, but they were super fun for this jam.
Elektron Octatrack MkII - sampler, MIDI sequencer, mixer, effects
Moog Minitaur - bass
Audiothingies Micromonsta 2 - pad and melody double
Eurorack skiff:
- Prok Drums (kick, snare, hats, clap) - drum sounds
- ALM Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout - clock, LFO, euclidean, etc.
- ALM Busy Circuits mmMIDI - MIDI to CV converter
- Mutable Instruments Grids - drum sequencing
- Intellijel Mixup - mixing
- Happy Nerding FX Aid XL - drum compression
- Qu-Bit Data Bender - glitch business
- Intellijel FSR 1U - CV control of snare fills
- Endorphin.es Golden Master 1U - compression and EQ
- Intellijel Mixer 1U - final mix output
Kenton MIDI Thru - splitting MIDI output from Octatrack to devices
Octatrack samples created in the box, using various synths and samples from Reason 12, Native Instruments, and Arturia
Performed live and recorded to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.
Thanks for listening.

Great, as always. And finally some love for the Micromonsta 2. For me, by far the best Minisynth and it beats also a couple of way bigger and more expensive synths i.m.o.

Packs a lot of punch into a small (and sturdily built!) box. I'm struggling with getting my ideal sounds out of it, but I love the brassy sound of it when it's subdued. Looking forward to exploring it more!

@@JayHosking what would be its competition in terms of portability, and polyphony? dreadbox nymphes? boutique JU-06a?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking Год назад
@@tendingtropic7778 Great question. Nymphes is really awesome, I like the oscillators and filter more, but doesn't have the stereo effects or bi-timbrality. JU-06a sounds great but the filter fader doesn't feel right to me, has too few voices, and again needs some reverb. It's not nearly as small and portable but I'm going to try the MiniFreak. The MC-101 also might be a great choice. And there are a bunch of other desktop options I've considered, too (Virus TI2 module, Sequential Tetra, etc.) but definitely in a higher price range.

Yes dude! Awesome jam. I am curious tho - how would you rate the bass station 2 vs a minitaur? Mainly for bass duty, but also a s a companion to the Octatrack
@JayHosking
@JayHosking Год назад
I'm sure the BS2 is awesome for bass, as many others who make great music turn to it. Personally, I find I like the BS2 a little more in the mid and upper range. The size of the BS2 is great, small but not too small, big enough but not too big. I am partial to the Minitaur over everything but the BS2 is an awesome synth.

Hello again, Jay. I just wanted to tell you I just cut out coffee, as well as caffeine from other sources. It supposedly gives you more energy and better sleep in the long run. I can't attest to that, though, but it's only been two weeks off, and I wasn't a heavy consumer in the first place. Is that anything that you would try, or is coffee too important a part of your routine?
@2MinuteWarning
@2MinuteWarning Год назад
Amazing performance Jay! Great setup indeed for a live performance, even if I understand that you'll probably make some changes 😉 For the Minitaur, are you planning to send Program Changes to switch sounds between the different tracks you'll be playing?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking Год назад
Likely not. The Minitaur is small enough that I'll just change things like filter or envelope or attack/release on the fly if needed. I'm not sure I've ever used the Minitaur presets! And thanks so much!

This is amazing man. I have a question about some of your jams here - do you ever or ever intend to pull stuff back out to play these after recording the videos? All of your jams are such varied setups that it feels like they must be one and done 'record it and out the window' projects? thats my best guess at least. for some reason my brain won't let me write stuff in this way because 'what if I need or want to recreate/perform it, etc'. Any tips or advice in general for how you approach this stuff? Just go forth and conquer? YOLO?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking Год назад
Great observation. I sometimes think of my music like making ice sculptures, capturing a recording of a transient piece of art. I find it thrilling that the configuration won't come together again, and it makes me try to get the best version I can perform before it "melts". That said, I'm in the process of constructing a live set, including some older material and some newer material. None of the older stuff was made with this in mind, so it will take a bit of reconstruction and reinterpretation, but everything in the Octatrack can be repurposed for it. Still, I think there's a joy in allowing yourself to capture ephemeral moments, and it's definitely where a lot of my inspiration comes from. Hope that helps, and thanks for the kind words.
