I don't actually have the numbers in front of me, but you're potentially forgetting about Professional x64 Edition's altered limitations. I remember using it for shits and giggles on my main rig, which at the time consisted of an i7 3770k, 16GB RAM and a GTX 970, and I didn't notice any issues with core count or RAM.

In March 2010 I installed and activated Windows XP Home in a Virtualbox VM. I still use that XP almost daily as Jukebox to play the wma copies of my CDs and LPs with WoW and TrueBass effects :) Windows XP survived 2 Virtualbox owners; 3 desktops; 4 CPUs (Pentium 4 HT; Phenom X3 8600; Phenom II X4 B97 and Ryzen 3 2200G). I use it with 1 core; 1GB of memory and I use Firefox ESR 52.9 browser and for me all works fine. Say once per year I use Google Sketchup 8.0 and Microsoft Office 2003 for existing old documents, like drawings of the house or my last CV from 2010. I run the XP-VM from a nvme-SSD.

In my experience, XP on SSDs is a great experience. far better than a HDD. I use a cheap SSD for the OS and a 2TB HDD and works like a dream. Full of games of XP era and compatible W98 software too :)

XP doesn't implement TRIM, so there's no limiting or batching of writes, and there's no wear leveling or communication between the SSD and the OS about what actual cells are being written. Hard drive failures are almost always mechanical and nearly random. SSDs fail electrically. Each memory location will have a ballpark number of writes before the circuit degrades to the point it's no longer usable (usually see this as 'write endurance' and seems to be between 10k and 35k writes before the cell gives up the ghost, with the higher end of the range for 3D nands and the lower end for regular flash nands). Modern OSs and drives communicate about that via TRIM and will do things that preserve drive life. It limits the number of writes and makes an effort to spread those writes around to different memory cells so it doesn't just repeatedly hammer the same cells over and over again. In an age where a 128 gig SSD is legitimately like 10 bucks this may or may not matter, I'm not going to say it's bad or you shouldn't do it. Just want people to know that you should expect drive failures earlier then you would on a modern OS so keep a backup image updated regular and keep a spare drive hanging around in the drawer.

@@PineappleForFun I understand the cons, of course. But the casual use of retro-gaming, the speed and the prices of SSD make for me the difference. Anyways, thanks for the deep explanation :)

Compared to xp, I wonder what limitations will exist for legacy windows 10 users after support ends in 2025? Its odd to think my current experience right now has limitations compared to my future PC even though now everything seems completely fine.

It'll be like 7 there'll be 3rd parties, slowly drop off over two years. Windows 7 starting next year won't be able to run a Modern browser or Steam.

Windows 7 would probably be your best bet on a system like that. Unless the ram is very limited, then Windows XP would be a better option

XP Vista all easy to install in Virtualbox but outside virtual environment many things fail badly. I have seen hundreds of videos on RU-vid installing Windows XP on the modern PC’s, all of them are installing in virtualbox or another virtual alternatives. Many applications work in such virtual environments but fail outside in real setups. After seeing this I have successful installed XPSP3 and Vista in virtualbox on my AMD Athlon 220GE with Radeon Vega Graphics 3.40 GHz PC but failed outside using USB’s, DVD’s and CD’s

Why not windows XP 64 bit?
@adventuresinnostalgia
@adventuresinnostalgia 10 месяцев назад
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is very different from Windows XP Pro/Home. It's actually closer to a workstation version of Server 2003. Way back when, Windows NT and W2K had a server version and workstation version very much focused on business. Which makes sense because businesses generally have both servers and workstations. Then there was Windows 98/ME on the consumer side which was more focused on home users. Windows XP _kind of sort of_ merged those two channels until 64bit processors were mainstream. XP Pro/Home was not designed to ever be a 64 bit operating system but Server 2003 was. If you strip out all of the features that make it a server operating system you basically have a desktop operating system... Right? So, the concepts in this series don't equally apply to Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Windows XP is my childhood it looks way better than Windows 10 in honest criticism everything's right there in the start menu and not scattered if I woke up in my childhood to relive those moments I would. I'm running experiments even if it's a USED Windows XP laptop to re experience my childhood. I remember the computer lab in my Elementary School had Windows XP and all the kids we would play games on it on a free game website before the teacher came in. I love the original background as well with the green hill and blue sky it feels like a warm welcoming after you boot it up nice and colorful. If I wanted a casual computer laptop wise it would definitely be Windows XP or desktop the older computers actually did feel like they were better than newer generation techology. I bought a used desktop with Windows 7 already on it and got very lucky finding it it would be for casual computing or casual games made in the early 2000s probably like The Sims and not heavy gaming. If time travel existed in any format I would definitely want to wake up in my childhood and die happy these were the golden ages of computers. If Microsoft runs out of ideas they can always rollback to Windows XP and start the cycle all over again.
