This is a documentary that follows a variety of people in the Ultra orthodox community in Israel, and tells different stories. First of is the Israeli election, in a feud between the sides in the community whether they should vote or not vote, second issue is the issue regarding education and poverty, where two women try to change the enviroment regarding haredi education and family planning, and the third part is about the controversy surrounding the internet in the Haredi world. Should internet be allowed or not?

Let me get this straight. A couple gets married. The man devotes himself to studying the torah all his life. The couple has fifteen kids. Everyone else is expected to provide food for the family. The family recieves welfare for the family. People go to the U.S and other countries to raise money to give to these dead beats There's something wrong here. This is sick. I'm glad I saw this documentary. I would never give money to people like this.

Communities of closedminded, isolated religious scholar-ascetics have existed throughout history, and even flourished for long periods. The difference? They called themselves monasteries, and existed out in the countryside where they could support themselves through subsistence farming without needing much interaction with outsiders (besides trading their agricultural surplus for whatever necessities they couldn't make themselves). No idea why these guys are living in the middle of an urban society that they hate and can't support themselves in. Put the Haredim out in the middle of nowhere and hand them pitchforks, and I think both they and everyone else will be much happier. Hell, even the idyllic, romanticized eastern European shtetls that they themselves pine for were pretty much that.

It's pretty obvious why. In the city its closer to the welfare office. Out in the country side they wouldn't be able to read the Torah all day so how could they farm for themselves/

@Samuel Levy No. A small population of indigenous orthodox Jews have been there longer. The majority came in the late nineteenth through mid twentieth centuries, just like the more secular Jews. The people causing the problems are, for the most part, *not* from that small first group. Also, this isn't only an issue in Jerusalem, though it's more serious there.

She seems to be a truly nice person. I bet she was shamed by other Haredis for being barren, even though it could have been her husband who was sterile. Not to mention that it doesn't matter, she found beautiful words to explain why she does not need pity.

I can't believe how much irrational hostility is directed to these Orthodox who simply don't want the distractions, pornography, trivialities, and other cultural pollution to effect their kids. Millions of new age hipsters have gotten rid of TV and internet. Everyone is committing the exact same intolerance they aim at the Orthodox by lambasting them for not living the modern "right" way ! "Either live like us or you are intolerant and wrong !"

The only real objection is if they cannot be self sufficient and if it's hard for those who grow up in them to leave. Apart from those issues I have no problems with them at all. We have them in London and other parts of the UK and they have always been good neighbours.

+jonathan mcCormack Uh, it's not irrational to be skeptical and critical of a community that, due to its insularity, lack of education, strict segregation of the sexes and intense rules about "morality", is comprised of a majority living in abject poverty, affords zero choice to its children about whether to be a member of the society at large and become educated or not, (unlike the Amish, by the way, who have rumspringa) has rampant child abuse, both sexual and physical and subjugates its women in an incredibly cruel manner.
@jonathanmccormack3607
@jonathanmccormack3607 8 лет назад
The Hassid’s are eminently educated, they study and recite Torah constantly. But you probably mean the type of education thats the “right kind,” makes money, upholds the ideology that values freedom and liberty, and not the “wrong” values of tradition and communal living. I wonder, what choice were you given? Which different communities were you brought to and given a choice to live in? Of course, I wouldn’t want to be irrational and question the value of individual choice, clearly your “morality” is the correct one. Liberty and free choice are “good” and tradition “bad.” Of course separating the sexes and other “wrong morals” have kept the Jewish people alive for 3,000 yrs, but that’s nothing compared to the experience of a brief few decades of life, obviously a person should think for themselves and not rely on centuries of proven wisdom. The child abuse - does it rival the sexual abuse found on American college campuses? One and four college women are sexually assaulted but what what would you have them do ? Live in (gasp) poverty! Raising families?! Devoting themselves to God and honoring their ancestors ?! No, clearly you know what life is really about, what the right values are, and shame on them for disagreeing !

I am a muslim and i agree with your point. I don't understand why the secular community -Im secular my self- keeps pushing communities that don't want to live up to their standards to become more like them. How is that part of tolerance the secular community claims to be part of? yes of we can speak against things wrong in some communities like the treatment of women, and we need to stop spreading false stereotypes on them too. They are not ignorant, stop calling them that, they are just different.

I have watched the other sections of this documentary and found this concluding one very moving indeed, also sad, it is these people's determination that keeps them segregated, it is a Jewish way. I can understand their feelings however i cannot condone the aggression that some are stirring up. The world is not us and them, God would not agree to violence or hatred, neither would God want misery or inequality. There are many things that are wrong in the world , a great many but what is needed is a way forward to combat that, not a degeneration into hatred and alienation....we need to try to understand one another more...Amen.

Committed Christians would consider smoking to be sin but these people appear to be ok with it.
@eauvive3101
@eauvive3101 5 лет назад
Sin means transgression of the Torah. Drinking alcoholic beverages isn't prohibited, as well as smoking. In fact, the Torah condemns the abuse of something, as for instance being drunk or addict, because it makes you loose your self control and thus makes it easy for you to sin (ex : lusting after someone, being violent, insulting people etc).
@eauvive3101
@eauvive3101 5 лет назад
@Guns N' Moses I think you haven't understand my comment at all. Apologies for my language, if it wasn't clear enough. First of all I was reacting to the fact that many Christians consider drinking as sinful. I never said that the Torah prohibits the drinking of alcoholic beverages! On the contrary, if you read, my point is that because sin = transgression of Torah, as alcohol isn't prohibited, then it cannot be considered sin, no pb with that. I think it is stupid to call sin things that are not, while on the other hand certain prescriptions are ignored. Drinking is encouraged (I disagree when you say "commanded" the term is not appropriate) on some occasions as kiddush, havdalah, feasts, marriages, for rejoicing. Or for people who need their hearts to be warmed up, as the sick, those in pain, those who are mourning. You quote passages which talks about wine consumption for people who need comfort, this is quite different as being drunk at a party. Drinking is a pleasure just as eating good food. However to reach the state of drunkeness and loose all self control is not "commanded" because it can easily lead to sin. Excesses can happen, but should we let our péchés mignons dictate us ? Should we excessively eat (kosher) fast food because the Torah doesn't prohibit such type of food? It is best to avoid any sort of excess, be it food, wine, cigars... Both for the health and spiritual consequences that might come out of it. This is why there are rabbinical prescriptions about which amount of alcohol it is best to not exceed. From all the bad exemples of excessive drinking I quote the episode of Noah making a fool of himself in Genesis 9:20-21. The exemple of Lot who got drunk and committed incest (Genesis 19:21). Adonai also commanded that certain men be consecrated to Him and never consume alcohol as Samson (Judges 7:13) for a reason obviously. The Natzirim vow (Numbers 6) of abstaining from any fruit of the vine and sort of alcohol in order to avoid any possible defilement of the being is also a good exemple. And we also have our own exemples that may be even more insightful on the matter... Everything that is permitted isn't profitable. I would not recommend you to get drunk. Feeling tipsy is kinda okay and normal when drinking a few glasses and I believe it is the rejoicing of the heart you talk of. Beyond that, imo loosing one's mind shouldn't be assimilitated to joy as it is definitely not. Joy isn't blabbering, laughing stupidly, or letting one's thoughts go wild. It's up to you to seek God's counsel on that matter concerning His will for you. We're all different in our experiences, physical abilities and limits. Adonai bless you and keep you, Adonai forgive you, and renew you. Shalom

So I watched all of the parts of this documentary. At the end of it all, it just goes to show that their world is crumbling down before their very eyes, and if they don't admit to their faults, they will not exist. The fact that they have to make countless offspring just to stay relevant shows that. They live in poverty when they don't have to. The men don't work. Women make babies. They live off of charity. The planet's resources are going scarce. They aren't doing much to provide for it. When shit gets real, charities will dwindle. And the last group of people to be fed and aided for survivial will be them because they don't provide anything even for themselves. Why help people that don't help themselves? Not to mention the hatred that they hold. Time to let go. If other oppressed people (especially your own people, the ones you look down on, the seculars) can let go, so can you. I love how they look down on everyone else, but are the lowest to begin with. How can you look down on something that isn't beneath you? Some twisted logic right there. They will slowly die off if they don't change. Education is key. What Bambi and that lady's school are doing is the best thing for these people. Only thing I would say is stop giving to them because we are give them more than they are producing. There should be an equal exchange, and none exists here. Teach them that there are ways to preserve your old ways without living in poverty or shamelessness. THe fact that they don't even speak to or awknowledge anyone outside of their communities means that they don't exist on the outside. Therefore, they should be self-sustaining themselves, but they aren't. Well, we shall see what the future holds for them.

I found it very interesting listening to the section in school where the young women were studying sociol work. It appears the issues have evolved post Holocaust when so many spiritual leaders died. The idea that those who study and refine themselves lift the world is a noble one and there have been others such as the Cathars/Perfecti in Southern France.......... I noticed though that this appears bad for the young women who are left with all the children and this affects the mental health of some. Poor parenting has a huge effect and perhaps some husbands do need to have paid work instead of spiritual work to help support their wives and families. The Elders need to sit down and discuss these very divisive and unfair issues and find a way through for their well being of present and future generations.

I am haredi and you can see the shades and variations within our world- but this is nothing new-- they say 2 jews, 3 opinions- the thing that unites us all is the utmost importance of torah study and following the commandments- even in Talmudic times there were conflicting opinions on all issues, but with the times, there forms a slow concensus and mainstream approach-- the hot issues today are computers/smartphones, army, etc-- in short, everyone chooses their community and specific rabbi for spiritual guidance- psychologically, it makes you feel a part of something, -- a feeling that you're going somewhere and accomplishing something in this world for yourself and for your people

I think it is good that they created a save internet. Internet is needed, so it cannot be ignored. Secondly it is good that bad things are blocked, because the soul is weak.But our soul cannot get rid of the sins by ourselves working for it. David asks God in psalm 51 to wash his sins from him and to give a new spirit and joy. It states that God has no joy in workings of humans, but in a broken mind, verse 19: a broken heart God will not reject. you can change your life but not your soul.

I think your comment you're somewhat ignorant. I have a family, children and I had a wife but she was killed, and I work and study Torah. If you work if you want to study, you make time. I listen to tapes when I am working, or read in the evenings during my spare time, when my chronic pain keeps me up at night I study. My day is full, I make time anyway. It's important to me, because it's the way I should live my life, however, it is not all there is. We were put on this earth to learn and to do. We were not put on this earth to sit and learn all day long, which one could say is kind of lazy. There's a point where you become saturated with the material.
@neongirluk
@neongirluk 6 лет назад
Exactly if you can afford to do both then do both. If not do not have that many children. Also do not make the state pay for you to sit at home and study Torah. Just like you do not want to pay for men to sit at home reading the Qu'ran. Though oddly enough most fundamental Muslim men actually work. Now we need to help liberate the women.

And you don't need to learn until 40 to DO Torah. You need to learn till 40 to read the Zohar, but not to DO Torah in the world. Jews are called to be a light to the gentiles but how can the Gentiles see this light if it is locked away in a room studying?

From a Torah perspective this entire documentary is seen differently. I looked up Matan B'seser Bambi; 1667 54th St., Brooklyn, NY 11204. They will get a check from me for sure. With the focus of a Torah Microscope we can ascertain what are positive and negative qualities. If we gave only into our raw emotions we would miss the most important facets of living and growing in Yiddishkeit.

It is very good thank you. I remember my mother (Catholic) despairing of the story of Martha and Mary in the Bible - all right for all those men worshipping Jesus and Mary not lifting a finger whilst poor Martha had to get on with the chores. Man may not live by bread alone but he and his wife still need to provide the bread - not by donations from others. By all means live a simple religious life with few possessions (eg Gloriavale Christians in NZ) but support yourself in doing so.

That story can be upsetting. However, I find it interesting that Martha is a saint in the Catholic Church, while Mary, the one who "chose the better" is not in the calendar.

My impression ist that these people claim the physical land, but want it only for people like themselves. The state of Israel recognizes secular and non-orthodox Jews and has a set of laws that is different from the Torah -- that's why the Haredim reject it. But they still believe they are entitled to the soil.

My problem with the Haredim is that they want to tell everyone how to live. I believe they have the right to live the way they want to but they do NOT have the right to tell the rest of us how to live. This is where I push back against them. One thing that really bothers me about their beliefs is that they blame non-haredi Jews for causing the holocaust. They believe that Jews who are not haredi actually caused the holocaust. This is. hateful and disgusting point of view in my opinion. I have no sympathy for this point of view. I do not hate the Haredim, but I do hate some of their beliefs, such as the aforementioned. Still, I judge each individual on their merits, not based on their group identity.

I do respect people religious practices and customs! the shameful thing in their story of victimization is that they became savages while victimizing people who have given them escape from their genocide, now they are occupying their land illegally, killing people ruthlessly, bulldozing people homes arrogantly and taking their shelter away inhumanely. So, just because you became victim of holocaust, doesn't give you a right to go and cause genocide and holocaust to any body else in the world especially those people who ended up providing you shelter. Shameless morons! The disgraceful thing was studying Torah all day and having dozens of Kids while dependent on charities to feed them? where is the human dignity and man's self respect of taking care of his family? what kind of God would tell you not to have your priorities set straight and not to have balance between worshiping and practically providing for the family without been dependent on charities?

As far as I understand it is the Ultra Orthodox Jews who don't agree with Zionism and conscription of their youth into the military. As far as all men learning Torah 24/7 that was not a command at least not in my bible. Moses instructed by the command of G_D in Exodus 20:8 "Remember the sabbath day to hold it sacred, you are to render service and you must do all your work in six days But the seventh day is a sabbath to YHWH your Elohim. It is not my place to decide what other people should do but I feel it would be good if the men of the Orthodox Religion could work some pasture grounds and have their own produce and the women could have the means to make their own and families clothing within a secluded community lifestyle. I think they would feel a sense of accomplishment if they could do that. Even if they could work 5 days a week studying on the sabbath and one other day plus they have evenings after the little ones are in bed. It seems to me these Jews want to live the life of the Nazirite who did dedicate their lives to their Elohim as Levite priests did for a period of time. However it is very difficult for a community to have lots of children without the means to provide for them. I don't want to make any decisions for a persons way of life as long as they don't harm other people then I will not make any decision for them by objection. These Orthodox Jews appear to have a desire to be holy in the presence of YHWH. Although you might say they harm their own families. Their own families generally appear to uphold the decisions of their parents way of life up until now when the world is stepping up the One World Government agenda which means depopulation of most of the world's inhabitants which Orthodox Jews in this video appear to be against..

Jane Smith I do hope you are right.My guess is that some portion of Hassidim would behave like that. Israeli police cracked a conspiracy by young Hassids to blow up a Muslim elementary school not so many years ago. Then you have the Kahane - like groups of today.But I think this is a small minority and rare. Also you are correct,USA Hassids do not hide the fact that many men just fill their days with Torah study and rely on state support for their large families.Between the two,the Amish seem more upstanding and responsible.The Amish also appear much more low-key and relaxed in both their demeanor and talk. Just my opinion.

Yeshua in the Brit HaGadasha is a Jew. He came to bring us back to the Torah. When Yeshua (Jesus) walked the earth there was no New Testament. Every single book in the New Testament refers us back to the Tanak. The land of Yisra'el is not to be devided or sold. It is the dowry of the bride. It is YHVH"s Land. We have to keep Torah to stay in the land and because we love YHVH. Yisra'el and Yehudah got dispersed because they did not keep Torah. I am a South African woman and I keep Torah and have the ya'ad (Witness) that Yeshua is HaMassiach and He will return to Zion. Amein,Amein

Anyway the Torah is a law about how to live in the world, and you won't understand the Torah until you have fully understood the world, and seen and known what really goes on in it. Exile was God's idea and he equipped the Jews to live in exile, indeed all the time in the Bible they were being exiled, so it is today that Israel is still in exile, so no wonder they can't get on in Israel. the frum communities in the diaspora, there is a logic there, that makes them real in their hasidut in the world. but put hasidut in the context of medinat yisrael and there is trouble, because the whole of hasidut is about protest and separation, but how can you separate from the holy land and the holy people? That is separating from the separate, and it doesn't work.

I only have questions. What if a woman doesn't want to have children? What if a woman or a man would like to study? What if someone is ill, but modern technology could save their lives? What if I only want to have 2 children? For me as a woman, who speaks three languages and has 2 degrees, really hard to understand, what it means, that aather and husband don't allow to study? Not to mention, if God forbid someone is gay or lesbian in that community? I can accept religions. But I can't understand why do you need to live a life like in the stoneage?
@boliussa
@boliussa 12 лет назад
They also don't fight in the army if studying all day. And most people even in that community, don't have the capacity to really study all day, so they waste much of the day. There should only be a few elite that are allowed to do it, and the rest not. Also they have so many children,and so it's a ridiculous burden on the woman and means they all live very poor.If you actually watch the video, you see some religious women themselves want change.Even Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's religious daughter.
@boliussa
@boliussa 12 лет назад
the woman at 6:06 passionately argues one side, then the other. "are you saying the husband is wrong to study torah?" vs "the woman dropping down dead". The solution to her would have to be a compromise.. so the husband doesn't study so much that the woman drops dead.

Also there are other theories, for Ashkenazi IQ, like maybe being restricted to finance meant the smarter Jews got married and had more children Or the marrying off of daughters of business men to rabbinical scholars Also, many find the Talmud not very impressive. Another answer, is maybe back then, Torah study made literate. In those days most gentiles couldn't read. But nowadays with academia, the mind can operate at a high level outside of Torah, and accomplish great and greater things.

The girl who is speaking at 8:08, there is wisdom in her words. I don't know much about the nation of Israel much less of Haredi but it seems that they are not the same as the Zionists. I am glad to hear that the Ultra Orthodox Society in Israel seems to care for the Torah. I can see that one of the ideas to have men study the Torah is so that they search for the Most High God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I see these videos and it is unavoidable to feel sadness due to the poverty that these people are going to and the little children specially. It is a joy to my heart to know that at least this society still cares and repenting from their doings and looking to come to terms with God. The following I embrace as truth: there is no better enterprise for men than to honor the Lord God almighty all the days of of his life with all his mind with all his heart. But also taking care of the family wife and children and parents is a way to honor God. the weight of the law is too heavy bear; this is for all men Jewish or gentile. Also remember that by the law nobody can have peace nor true life. But God so loved us that he send his only begotten Son Jesus Christ/Yeshua Hamashiach so that whoever beliefs in him will not perish but have everlasting life. From the bottom of my heart I pray that the only one God, the God of Abraham and Isaac and Israel may forgive our transgressions open yourt eyes and help you see that the only way to Him is thorugh His Son Jesus Christ. For He is a good God and he is forever merciful so Thanks be to Him for the sacrifice of his only begotten Son because if it wasn't because of him I would have never come to learn of the God of truth and love a faithful loving God. Praises be to Him forever and ever. Amen. So people Open your heart to Him, it is just Him you are missing. With much love

I think the protest was not to vote wasn't it? Maybe to stop people in his charedi community from doing something unjewish like voting. Some vote to get more money for their yeshivas, even though they don't accept the govt system, so voting may not mean accepting the system, but they still oppose voting. It doesn't mean those in their community that vote become not jewish . And if it does mean that ot him, then he doesn't want that to happen.

People believe what they want to believe, and people take to themselves-or try-the exact amount of power or control they feel they need to be safe. And there are men who need so much control for themselves to feel OK, without caring that other people have rights, and that the men’s rights are not one jot more important to anyone else’s. But power hungry men, control hungry men, will go to great lengths to take power from other people....these Haredim call the police Nazis, but this is simply a projection of their own insensate need for control. They have become what they’re most afraid of.

And one problem with these groups with 12 children each family (and many religions groups including Christians and Muslims have similar large families if they are fundamentalists) is you end up with 50% of the population under 25. The problem with that is hot headed people lacking wisdom are often that age so it gets harder for the wise elders to control the young.

I do not hate the Jews, I love them. The One whom I follow instructed me to pray for them and the peace of Jerusalem. This is the truth revealed thousand of years ago: The Mosaic Law was given specifically to the nation of Israel (Exodus 19; Leviticus 26:46; Romans 9:4). It was made up of three parts: the Ten Commandments, the ordinances, and the worship system, which included the priesthood, the tabernacle, the offerings, and the festivals (Exodus 20-40; Leviticus 1-7; 23). The purpose of the Mosaic Law was to accomplish the following: (1) Reveal the holy character of the eternal God to the nation of Israel (Leviticus 19:2; 20:7-8). (2) Set apart the nation of Israel as distinct from all the other nations (Exodus 19:5). (3) Reveal the sinfulness of man (cf. Galatians 3:19). Although the Law was good and holy (Romans 7:12), it did not provide salvation for the nation of Israel. “No one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin” (Romans 3:20; cf. Acts 13:38-39). (4) Provide forgiveness through the sacrifice/offerings (Leviticus 1-7) for the people who had faith in the Lord in the nation of Israel. (5) Provide a way of worship for the community of faith through the yearly feasts (Leviticus 23). (6) Provide God’s direction for the physical and spiritual health of the nation (Exodus 21-23; Deuteronomy 6:4-19; Psalm 119:97-104). (7) Cause people, after Christ came, to see that they couldn’t keep the Law but needed to accept Christ as personal Savior, for He had fulfilled the Law in His life and paid the penalty for our breaking it in His death, burial, and bodily resurrection (Galatians 3:24; Romans 10:4). The believer in Christ has the very righteousness of the Law fulfilled in him as he obeys the Holy Spirit who lives within him (Romans 8:4). The purpose of the Mosaic Law raises these questions: “Are you trusting in yourself to keep all the Ten Commandments all the time (which you can’t do)?” OR “Have you made the choice to accept Jesus as your Savior, realizing that He has fulfilled all the commandments all the time for you, even paying your penalty for breaking them?” The choice is yours.

I don't see what you mean at all. When you say education, you seem to mean Jewish education. You talk of Jewish contribution to the world, but when people refer to that, what they usually mean are people like the 30% of nobel prize winners that are of Jewish background. Perhaps you think that's caused by their Torah study. I find it hard to see what you mean.
