The Poke Sallet festival was magical for my family. Just a perfect night. The moon, the people. The music. Everyone is so friendly in Harlan. So sad I missed out on the inside vendors.
My sister and I are bringing my elderly mother up to Harlan in July. She was born in Evarts, it’s going to be her last time home probably. Folks, we've had a couple of comments making the point that Me and Harlan county must be misspelling and mispronouncing our beloved festival. It was called Poke Sallet long before Tony Joe White, confused people by calling it Polk Salad in his famous song "Polk Salad Annie" Salad is a cold raw green while, Sallet is a cooked green. It's sad to me that if someone from Appalachia or the South says or spells something differently then someone else it's automatically assumed the person from Appalachia or the South is saying or spelling it wrong. Does anyone grow poke sallet in a garden? Or commercially? My grandmother picked and cooked it, but I remember it being sort if a wild plant, growing on fence rows...
I've heard of people growing it in their garden but I've never seen it done myself. A company named Allen in Arkansas used to sell it in cans I remember seeing it in Kroger and Food City I've not seen it lately so I don't know if they still sell it or not. You're right about the fence Rows we've got it growing along the privacy fence in our backyard.
Salad is any kind of green that is eat cold and raw, sallet is a green that is cooked. Raw spinach is a salad, cooked spinach is sallet.
