Harley-Davidson Evo Was The Original Milwaukee 8

Harley-Davidson Evolution engines had a 4 valve cylinder head long before the Milwaukee 8 engine was ever even thought of. Feuling actually designed and manufactured a bolt on set of 4 valve heads for the big twin Evo engine. These heads made incredible power on a stock engine, they were a direct bolt, you could even run dual carburetors. Now while these were reliable and made excellent power, they were expensive and not really cost effective to add to your engine build. Other aftermarket companies started to try and build their own 4 valve heads, but with changes made to the design and trying to build them cheaper led to predictable results. In the late 2000's it even looked promising we might of seen a 4 valve head for the Twin Cam engines!

Jim Feuling was an amazing engineer. He even designed a W triple version of the EVO. H-D first showed some interest in that, then kind of backed away from it. While I found it kind of cool in a way, it added more complexity, and I like simplicity. As for the 4 valve heads, I see no purpose for them. Yes, they may have improved performance, but the EVO Harley was not a performance motorcycle. It was all about looks, sound, and feel. It was a cruiser, and there was no reason for it to go fast. I've always considered Harleys to be more or less touring bikes, and I don't just mean the big baggers with fairings. The FXRs, Dynas, and Softails were the kind of bikes you could strap a bedroll to, and take off across the country, Then Came Bronson style. I always liked that customized Softail Standard on the TV series "Renegade" I could see myself riding that cross country with just the bare essentials strapped to it, Easy Rider style. Lots of power is not required for that kind of riding. It's all about kicking back and relaxing. I have put many happy miles on my 1989 FXRS Low Rider that way.

I heard there was a guy in Florida that was connected with Feuling and he bought the rights to the heads. You should do a video on clutches. Specifically Rivera Primo pro clutch. Now the same clutch is being made by the original designer through American Prime MFG. They are all in the same circles from the past. I found your channel a couple years ago and never miss a video. Hi from the U.K., I run these heads on my stock 89 Heritage Classic , it looks like the centre post has had to be altered to clear the rear exhaust as it comes out of the head straight back and not offset like a standard Harley engine. Looks great and so far no issues. I also have a built up 88” engine with these heads sitting on the bench that I’ve had for years, long before I bought the Heritage. The castings and engineering are superb.

I remember seeing bikes with 4 valve Fueling heads at Daytona Bike Week in the 90s. They weren't real common but they weren't exactly super rare either. The problem with making 100 plus hp on a stock Evolution Harley engine is the engine cases themselves. They would crack. Usually the bikes with Fueling 4 valve heads had aftermarket cases, generally S&S and STD. They were also always on FXR's.

@GixxerFoo My buddy worked at a dealer it wasn't a harley dealer they worked on everything. If I had a day off because of it being slow at work I would go there and help him and see what they were working on. What they did was they would buy wrecked or stolen bikes from the insurance company and they would rebuild them and sell them. They did complete repairs also it was all brands. The sporty was in there showroom and I seen it I asked my buddy about the heads as we are big chrysler fans. He said that was custom hemi heads made for the harleys. I asked if it was fast he said he never rode it. Nobody really cared about it, they mostly dealt with sport bikes. There was always odd and cool stuff there. My buddy would sell chrome and polished packages for people who wanted more bling on there sport bike The harleys had there own chrome stuff you can buy from there catalog but if there was something they did offer in chrome you would see my buddy. I want to say he started the polished and or chrome frame stuff at least around here. Now nobody wants that they want to black it all out. Sorry for rambling its just a flood of memories.

Back in the 70's early 80's Rivera Engineering made 4 valve heads for Shovelhead engines. They called them "Fuelie Heads". It required the builder to buy 4 extra rocker arms, cut them in half n also cut in half the original rocker arms and have them matched up n precisely welded up n machined to fit the fuelie heads. There were a coupla drag bikes built this way but the concept never took off because of the extra cutting n machining involved in the process and it was not cost effective for most of us, they cost and "arm" and a leg to start with then you had to do all this extra work on the rockers. The idea was good, but the cost was waay to high for most of us. The idea never died as we can see Grampa Harley brought the idea back in the M8's. Yes, they touted it as something new, but the idea behind it was decades old... What's old is new, What's new is old .. 😳

@@GixxerFoo Harley Davidson had 8 valve racing engines back in the teens. The 4 valve Sportster heads that I remember were not Fueling/Rivera, back in the 90's there was an aftermarket co. with the next big thing popping up every week. There is now a lot of energy being spent developing 3 valve heads for the M8.

Ultima I have seen a lot of at the drag strip with guys beating the hell out of them. I would choose Ultima over Revtech, most people either love them or hate them but they do have a good warranty. They've done a lot of R&D and creating their own cases and even crank pins to prevent fly wheel shift. Those motors put down serious power, the more streetable smaller inch engines I would say are very reliable. You get the big one with 140 horse that is what it is, I don't think they warranty that one for more than 30 days.

I put a set on my 1988 Tour Glide , they were stoopid money , I could be wrong , but I wanna say they were around $3500 , for the money I would have been better off building a bullet proof stroker .. Harley cases were not up to the task , Axtell or S&S would have been better .. I think after my trials with them , that if there was a flaw in the design , I believe the valves were too big for the motor ..

Twice as much valve face surface to burn or leak, twice as many springs to compress, I don't know, sounds a lot less reliable, especially on an EVO that's not even a balanced motor. Besides, adding a lot of compression and power requires changing to forged pistons, connecting rods, stronger pushrods, etc. Maybe it makes sense for racing... but not really, I mean who races a pushrod motor anymore. For a lot less money I can buy a used Softail with a 107 M8, stage-1 it, and call it a day. Don't get me wrong, I love my 1200 EVO but it is what it is and I'm just fine with that. Nothing wrong with an S&S kit and a tune, still reliable enough. Anything beyond that is getting a bit sketchy, sh!t's gonna break.

The heads and the valve train were very reliable, but like you mentioned you're playing with fire on the factory cases increasing compression and getting really wild.

Hardly Dependable's claim to fame is tractor like torque. Four valve heads increase flow for higher R.P.M. engines. 6 k rev's out of a long stroke turdly Ferguson is no reason to double the amount of parts thrashin around above that diesel like stroke. Ya can't polish a turd. And it will most likely increase price's to over 50 k.
@GixxerFoo

I agree the 4 valve head would really shine at wide open throttle, that's why the drag racers loved those heads. But a good port job on the two valve head would give you more than you wanted for the street.
