I was gonna do my bars next week. Great video, but I think I'm just gonna find a local shop to do it for me lol. Hopefully they'll be cheaper than a Harley dealership
Yeah, they are the OEM bolts. And yeah I believe I used the tip of the vise grip to get ahold of the smooth part of the bolt so I didn't mess the threads up. When you put them back into your riser set up you don't have to torque them, just a little past snug, the nuts should hold them in place. Hope this helped
Might be a stupid question but I have ape hangers that I want to adjust them forward a bit to extend my arm a bit do I need to just loosen up the four bolts on the clamps? To re tight them back do I need to put locktite?
No stupid questions here man, this page is all for help! Before I swapped my bars I did the same thing. You don't need to take the clamp bolts out just loosen enough to move the bars then re tighten. You'll be able to tell if the bolts back out because your bars will get loose. If they back out you can locktite but I wouldn't worry about it for a small adjustment like that 🤘
Nice video, thanks for the tutorial. I'm debating between the 9- and 11-inch HUD. I'm curious about the gauge display? Do you get a clear and perfect view of the gauge display while riding? Or is it hard to see the gauge display info? Thanks!
I'm 6'3 an I have a decent view of it. The only time I have trouble is with the glare of the sun, but I guess that's with anything glassy. Thanks for watching!
The only extension I had to buy was for the hud since it was at the top of the riser. All the cables and switches were long enough. If you do a different riser you can place the hud somewhere where you won't need a extension, but it all depends on your set up
Man is there anyway you can send me a pic of the tbw plug coming out of the frame? I’m doing internal wiring on my 16in apes and the guy before me just cut the plugs and soldered them together for some reason and I’ve ordered connectors to fix this but can’t find anything on which wire goes in what slot of the connector of the frame TBW connector
Geez man, that blows. Some people should not try to do stuff themselves. Send me a message on Instagram and when I get home I can send you some pictures. Insta is @kmvaders I'll look for a picture online too if I can find one.
Did you mention how tall you are? :) cause I will change my bar setup soon and wonder what riser and bar height i should go with.. how many inches is the bar wide and how much pullback roughly?
Thank you for your reply. I knew it was different and unusual. Have a streetbob myself. The gas cap caught my attention. We'll done to you. Best wishes from Ireland and keep up the good work.
Without looking at it I couldn't be for sure. Double check your battery connections, check the fuse box, make sure all the connections are secure and wires are in the plugs properly. I'd be leaning towards a fuse without knowing. And I hate to bring it up, but there is a chance the wires got pinched and are shorting out on the risers or bars. But double check the connection and make sure everything is in the right spot. Double check the battery has voltage too. Let me know if you do all that I can do some more digging and try to figure it out with you
I need help. On 13:06 there’s a black and white wire together coming from the throttle control. Idk wtf it connects to. I’m at a loss. Is this an optional connection wire?
Yeah there's one connection in there it's a long skinny pig tail and it's a accessory I believe it's for this cruise control but I'm not 100% there is one set of wires that doesn't plug into anything
Yeah that's the original hardware from the old bar mount. If you're using new bushings it's kinda difficult to get them started cuz the bushings are thick, but it'll work!
I’m doing my bars next week - I ordered 12 inch pull back risers with moto bars that have a 2.5 inch rise so about a total of 14 inch lift. I did order a full cable extension kit for the throttle wire, ABS brake cable, turn signals and HUD. I know I’ll definitely need to use the HUD wire extension, but do you think I could get away with the stock lengths on the rest of the wiring? Or should I just use all the extensions that I got? Just don’t know how confident I am at extending the brake line and throttle cable myself. Any tips?
I think you'll be fine not doing your brake line, and the throttle wire extension shouldn't be hard that's a easy system. My blinkers are maxed out with the 11inch rise and moto bars, so depending on your exact setup you will probably need the wire extension just by a little bit. Having too much wire is better than being short, but you can always run the old ones before you open the new packages to see how long it sticks out, I'd recommend the throttle side blinker as a test run. Best hint is be paitant and don't take short cuts. Taking the wire ends off is a pain but it's the only way with this style of riser.
@@harleyhelphintsfxbb3684 thanks for the tips! I got a Dominator Industries 12 inch pull back risers, and moto bars. They did send the whole cable extension kit as well so I may as well just do all the extensions? It’s all plug and play anyways. The clutch cable doesn’t seem too bad
@@harleyhelphintsfxbb3684 also if you have any tips on hooking up the extended ABS brake line, that would be awesome. The kit has the extension for the upper clutch cable extension and ABS brake line extension. I’m mechanically inclined, but just can’t find too many tips on going about it
@@kjsarro1352 honestly man you're probably good without doin the brake. You can if you want for extra, but I didn't do the brake line and there's plenty of slack. If you wanna do it cuz you have it I've only done dirt bike brake lines and the biggest pain is bleeding them. I wish I could help ya more with that. I wouldn't think it'd be too hard, I'll try to find something for you right now.
Did you use the factory riser bolts or new bolts? Also did you have to depin? I have people telling me I’ll have to depin wires and others telling me I don’t have to. For reference, I went with Thrashin risers and bars. Maybe there’s something about Thrashin that allows people not to depin?
Yes I used factory bolts, it was hard with the new bushing to get them in there but over time the lucky Dave's bushings smashed down, you'll have to retighted over time. And yes you have to de pin and re pin. I reference a good video by someone else In this video. It's a pain
I think I got the 21". I'm not 100% though. The riser is 12+the distance from the riser to the control+ extra to tie into the connection at the bottom. I'm sure if you need to exchange, they will help you out. They were awesome when I felt with them
Yeah the only thing that I had to get an extension for was the HUD. If you go any taller than what I did in this video you'll need longer wiring and cables. I think the stock apes that come on the bike are 12 inches
Yeah Its a 12" riser and the bar has a few inch bend. That is basically max for the OEM cables. But it works perfectly with this set up. The wiring is also long enough. I had to get a HUD wire for the top mount display though
From my research I found that 11 inch risers were about max for all the cables. The HUD needed and extension because it's at the top of my risers. Depends on your set up. Sorry my response is so late. Hope this video helped.
When I reinstalled and plugged my wires in, I had a female left that is black and white. The others were all male. Can’t figure out where this one plugs into. Any advice?
Is it a longer black female plug, with black and white wires coming from it? If it is that's an auxiliary plug for add ons (I asked Harley and that's what they said). I was in the same boat haha, hope your happy with your bars and this video helped!
@@harleyhelphintsfxbb3684 Yep that's the one! Haha. Appreciate it. Definitely got me to install myself. I had to extend my wires with the risers I chose, but all in all, it worked out. Thanks for the reply!
I wanted to do 7/8 but the clamp and bar is 1". The fly bars are specifically made for this riser system. Be biggest reason 7/8 will not work is I couldn't find a throttle by wire system that worked. The fly bars have all the cut outs for the throttle by wire. No issues with stock equipment going back on. I think if you ran 7/8 it would be hard to fit all the wiring down them.
Check out about 6 comments down, another guy had the same issue. I explained it and attached a video to walk ya through it. Let me know if you can't find it I'll copy and paste it to your comment
one more question for ya boss. I just ordered 14' lucky daves san Diego t bars. their customer service said I should be able to stretch my stock cables but I'm skeptical. For this install I see you tagged guerilla cables. did you order the "2016-2020 Ultimate CAN-Bus w/ Throttle-by-Wire" and are these long enough to higher bars?
Oh man I'm sorry, I just saw this comment, the info I found is that the cables stretched except for the HUD. My HUD is at the top of the risers so it really depends on where that's installed and what your set up is. My risers were 11inch with about a 3 inch bar rise and the cables we're about maxed. HUD at the top of the risers was not gonna fit
Don't know if you'll respond but i was just wondering how comfortable those bars are, referring to their 32 inch width. I was also looking at a similar bar with a 32in width. Your arms aren't too wide?
I noticed a big difference right away. The bars felt really good, and the handling was way better than oem. I'm 6'3 and I race motocross so the bars feel great. Im not near my bike right now so I can't confirm they're 32" wide, but if you looked up those exact bars (forbidden moto fly moto bars I think) they are probably whatever you've researched. Hope this helped. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@harleyhelphintsfxbb3684 ayyy lmao thanks for the reply! I never raced motocross but i did ride dirt bikes in the woods/trails. Yeah the bars i was looking at were made by ODI which are the same width as FM fly moto bars, might be pairing those bars with original garage moto 8.5" pullback risers. I'm only 5'6 so yeah lol just didn't know how 32" wide bars would feel, I guess being much shorter than you might come in to play. Was also looking at lucky daves riser bars which are 29" wide soo yeah
@@harleyhelphintsfxbb3684 oh yeah I bet lol getting real tired of these dad bike handle bars lmao the riser/bar setup I was looking at was for a women who is like 5'3 and I'm 5'6 so I'm guessing the bar width at that crazy
@@harleyhelphintsfxbb3684 I'm actually thinking about buying a digital gauge and risers from an FXBB to put on my FLHCS Heritage (I miss the digital speedo and the higher location). I used to have an FXBB before, and I know the offsets for the riser clamp bolts are non standard, but I don't know if there's anything else weird about the Street Bob risers.
@@kylebriones8498 okay then I would get an extended one. The oem hardly goes above the bar claps. I ordered one from gorilla cables out of southern California
Hey so I never detached my battery when I unplugged my bike. I had no idea I was supposed to do that. Now the bike won't fire back. Can you help me clear some codes?
Double check all your connections, especially the start button. It's easy to get them mixed up. Also here's the video link for clearing codes. There are other comments with the same problem if you scroll through. Hope this helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PZfnVim-BuY.html
Hey I got a question, so my bars and risers are torqued down and as little as getting on the bike and bringing the wheel straight tweaks the bars out of alignment, did I do something wrong?
Hmm I did the same, mine were loose at first and then I went back and wrenched em down a couple weeks later and they were good. They move very very little now, but not with normal riding. I didn't use a torque wrench I just cranked em down. I noticed too that this lucky Dave's squish ALOT, so maybe it just needs a little more
Hell ya man, here ya go! guerrillacables.com/2018-2021-softail-street-bob-breakout-fxdr-fxst-speedo-harness/ I think I did the 22", but I wouldn't hesitate to do 25". It's easier to have more than less!
Longer than I thought. About 4-5 hours, but I was figuring it out as I went. The hardest park is discounting the wire plugs and re attaching in the same order. Mark your wires and take reference photos. Also don't forget to disconnect your battery, otherwise you'll get codes. Easy to clear the code but it's better just to prevent it. If I had to do it again I'd be able to do it in 2 hours probably
Yeah that's an approximate height. The only reason I needed a gauge extension is because the HUD was integrated with the bar clamp at the top of the risers. Some mount below and you don't need an extension for that. My wires are pretty much at max right now so anything taller definitely need an extension kit. If you look at the stock mini apes they actually need alot of wire to run the 8inch ris and how far out the bars go.
@@harleyhelphintsfxbb3684 I went with dominator industries 12in risers with a 1inch pullback and I ended up going with the same bars as you but those bars have a 1 1/8 clamp area so they ended up not working with the risers I go so I have to get thrashin supply bars I think
@@lyleellis5432 yeah that's the draw back to the FM set up I went with they get a little bigger than 1". I bet it'll look good when you get it together though!
Hold the cycle button down turn the bike on and let it go through its cycle. Release and diag should display. Press the cycle button and it'll bring up the different sections for codes. If it has a N then there's no code. Press the cycle button to go to the next screen until you find a Y. Press and hold and it'll display to clear. I'll try to find a video for you. It's kind of hard to explain but once you do it it's pretty easy
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PZfnVim-BuY.html Check this hopefully it helps. Let me know if you need more help I'll look it up or post a video of my bike to help 🤘
I think I bought the 22 inch cable that's 6 inches over stock. Just cuz the HUD is at the top of the risers. Depends on your set up though. Sorry this comment is so late hope everything worked out
www.hdforums.com/forum/milwaukee-eight-m8/1231532-identifying-clearing-codes-on-2018-street-bob.html Check this. I would clear all the codes then if for whatever reason they come back you have two options. Take all the wires back out and check to see if you pinched one, or two take it to Harley. I cleared my codes at Harley and they never came back. So I could of saved time and cleared them myself. Don't stress, more than likely there's nothing wrong
