The Harmonic minor scale is a beautiful color that you can add to your solos. In this video, I am going to show you how you can apply the harmonic minor scale to some chords and get some great sounds. I sometimes see people comment that you don’t need the harmonic minor scale, I think this video will clearly show you why you don’t want to miss it.

Hey Jens! Thanks for the content :) I'm curious if you think the melodic minor or harmonic minor scale might be more useful in jazz. Both have their place but it is a lot more to memorise both and I seem to get by mainly with the melodic minor, especially with the altered scale. I'm guessing it's really just to have more colors in your vocabulary, but interested in hearing your thoughts
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
@@joenathanweber You need both. If you don't have harmonic minor then you don't have a tonal option for dim chords and b9 chords with a 5th in them.

6:33 Jens: you forgot the ninth scale degree on the C dominant chord. I've been working very hard on this video. It is easily one of your top ten videos you have ever made on RU-vid. I'm thinking about giving you a one time donation of about five dollars soon. I've been working on chords mostly the last year or so. Now that I've learned the chords and feel, I've started to turn my attention towards lines. It really helps that I worked on the swing and cadences first though.

I don't know it all. Lots of studying. I hope this helps. One of my favorite jazz songs is Autumn Leaves...I think this was written originally in G minor ..At the end of the song we play a Dominant D7.( D F# A C ) Most of the song is written G natural minor. ( G A Bb C D Eb F G).. at the end we do the G Harmonic minor. (G A Bb C D Eb F# G). The D7 notes are in this. Without the Harmonic minor we would have to put the Dmin7 (D F A C) In it's place. There is almost no tension notes in the vii7 (D min7). So it really makes a poor substitute for a D7 chord. About 10 years ago. I was introduced to modes. I play mostly by 👂. I seem to remember this a song that is Dorian. That of course is a way to think of it.
@PIANOSTYLE100
@PIANOSTYLE100 4 года назад
@@JensLarsen Jen's ..working on a version of Autumn leaves. It is in Amin 7. I harmonized the Harmonic scale. First I wrote about the A harmonic minor. Its just the natural minor with the b7 turned into the leading tone B. First I write the A min scale ..which comes from the scale a minor 3rd up. The ( C ) scale. Aolian mode or 6th mode. (A B C D E F G A). So if I am playing in A min. I would normally go the V7 of the Natural minor.. PROBLEM..There isn't one..Whaaat? The E min7 didn't even sound like the song. So I got the Dom.E7. That also means I am not playing natural minor. So I make a quick trip to the harmonic minor .It has all the notes of the E7. (A B C D E F G# A). Just looking at we see the E7 chord in it.

This is a bit of an outside analysis, but in your F major example, you could see that as a D harmonic minor with the C natural being a chromatic passing tone to Bb. (This would fit into your example of borrowing the harmonic minor and using it in a major II-V-I).
@bartsjazzman446
@bartsjazzman446 4 года назад
My first book was Leon White improvisation which gave the same scale a different name according to the root of the chord which I thought that was a better way of playing over unfamiliar chord changes I was handed on stage. However this concept of fitting the scale to the chord progression is easier to understand and hear.

Another great video; thank you, Jens! I really like the explanation about how the harmonic minor fits a particular use of the dim7 chord (beginning at 6:45). Diminished chords can indeed be tricky. A lot of theory books tell us that the diminished (whole-half) scale fits the dim7 chord perfectly. This is true if you play the dim7 in isolation, but it actual practice a lot depends on the context in which the dim7 chord is used. If you mechanically use a whole-half scale every time you see a dim7 chord, you can end up with some funny notes that sound unreasonably out of key. I have learnt from experience that the approach you take here is often what works best: it's best not to forget that we are still playing in a given key. So, it is OK if we leave the notes of the originals key (or the the scales suggested by surrounding chords) unchanged expect the notes that you MUST change to fit the chord tones of the dim7 chord. This way we sometimes end up with scales that do not even have standard names, but still the lines sound more natural. Maybe you could make a video on how you deal with dim7 chords (if you haven't yet done so). I'd be really interested!

Hey Jens, greetings to your danish kingdom....interesting and inspiring content...a big thanx for that...as you mentioned to play over that Maj7 #11 with a #9, I just wanted to share (I'm shure you already know it ;-) is to play over a maj7-chord with the maj-scale a whole step above (e.g. Dmaj-scale over Cmaj7-chord)... Great Lesson, Very organized, Bice thank you! One Hint: I miss a bit "shredding" your example on the 2 beats G#dim would have sounded more brilliant if you would have played 8 notes over it...I would advice scales with added chromatisism in a 16th musical landscape, makes it interesting to listen to, with your technique would sound great! i checked ot Chad a Great saxophone teacher and he came up with some great shredding on dim chords with addd chromatisim, Maybe you could also something like that. I think we guitarsit could still learn a great deal of our saxophone brothers...

Jens-- I've gotten a lot out of your videos on the various minor scales. Wish I could attach the output of an Excel spreadsheet I programmed for generating all the 15 arpeggios you've mentioned over the years for any desired melodic minor scale. My question: Haven't seen anything from you on the harmonic major, which I tend to naturally drift into during soloing over doms, guided only by my ear. I think I understand why I arrive there: it adds the b9 #9 and b13 to a dominant chord without taking on the #4. For my playing, I don't seem to want to take the lydian sound all the time. Is there a reason you've not discussed this scale? Could it be it as simple as your ears like lydian and mine don't? ...Ralph/Denver CO

Great video, Jens. I have an off-topic question i hoped you could help me out with: I rarely know which notes (and their function) I'm playing when improvising - I have major/minor/blues scale internalized and just shut my brain off when soloing, but recently, I started learning triads in all inversions across the fretboard in order to help visualizing chord tones. My question is, would you recommend thinking of/learning chord tones relative to the actual chord, or relative to the key? Take the IV chord for instance - would you think 4-6-1 (Root, third, fifth) relative to the key, or just 1-3-5? De bedste hilsener, Andreas :)
