The Harrier is a family of jet-powered attack aircraft capable of vertical/short takeoff and landing operations (V/STOL).
The Harrier was made in several variants; the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II, the Sea Harrier and British Aerospace Harrier II).

I was w/VMA 231 in 76/77 when we deployed aboard the USS FDR "Rosey". We flew the A models and did a full Med cruise deployment that fall/winter. It wasn't long before we had an AV8A on alert & F4 on ready CAT at night. The Harrier had the advantage of not needing a APP to start as it had it's own starter. The AV8A held it's own in simulated dogfights and we even sent a small deployment to an LHA for a show of force through the Suez canal. We spent 11 months on the Rosey, 6 in the Med and the other 5 getting her ready for her final Med cruise. Last I heard VMA 231 is still flying the B models but wil ltransition to F35's eventually. Carry On.

Thanks for sharing! Love comments from the people that actually were working with the aircraft. Very valuable!

The sea harrier also had a different shaped wing to the original and after Britain recommitted to the harrier 2, the wing was found to be more effective than the early McDonald Douglas revised wing design, so the so the wing was redesigned again using experience gained from the sea harrier, and the shortcomings of both the original and early McDonald Douglas design, and further development of the sea harrier wing to create what became the wing of of the av8b and bae harrier 2.

Sounds like a reasonable computer generated narration. Just the odd weird timing issue in the speech

Amazing aircraft 👍 love it one of my favourite fighters since childhood 😀👌 Wish the British weren't lazy and built Stealth Harriers 😭

A stealth Harrier - now that would have been interesting.

A "Harrier III" iteration operating now would be one of the most versatile - and relatively cheap - CAS systems around. But they got rid of it and opted for the Fat Amy instead, so expensive you can't afford to lose it, and nowhere near as robust or versatile in a battlefield role. Totally baffling.

Question for Harrier/ Kestrel/ p.1127 laureates- Did the early Kestrels & prototypes have the 500 gallon (500?) water tank that dumps H2O on the Pegasus engine during hovers to keep it cool? At a Miramar airshow a few yrs ago I had a great chitchat with an AV8B Marine Harrier pilot after his demo where he gave me a little tour of the cockpit, explained the ridiculously huge array of controls & instruments, and walked me through what a vertical takeoff/ landing entails and the transition to and from horizontal flight. What I learned is that it is a complicated and potentially super dangerous procedure. The water cooling system's ability to function properly and NOT run out of water is... pretty essential to the plane and pilot's prognosis of remaining intact. A big turbofan operating at near max thrust to keep the plane aloft at zero airspeed apparently runs a wee bit hot. So, I am wondering if this was a later addition after some lessons learned the hard way or if there was another cooling system before it that proved unreliable. 🤔?

I think 500 gallons might be a little extreme. I worked on the Harrier from early '80 through early '87, if I recall correctly, we used about fifty/fifty five gallons of distilled/ de-mineralized water...just saying.

Those British and American Harriers that used to operate in Bagram AB, Kandahar AB and Camp Bastion where only conventional take offs and landings were used, since they were not based on carriers, did they have to carry water? If not needed, then I would imagine the additional weight saved would be used for extra fuel or munitions.

50 gallons of distilled water provides ~90 seconds of water injection.

02:20 ah yes the AV-8A. Unfortunately the AV-8A has a rather poor reputation with the USMC pilots.

No mention of the US taxpayer funding - 75% - in 1958 through the MWDP for the Pegasus that the British government refused to fund. Without that money it's highly likely that the aircraft would have never made it past the drafting table.
