Taking in this performance here in 2022 has opened my eyes to the powerful artistry and humanity of Harry Belafonte. Previously I only knew the songs that made it into the pop charts, which I feel portrayed him as a novelty. But I see now he was a force of nature and a consummate artist. Great respect and admiration, and gratitude that he was on the world stage.
@@milenapaul6871 My parents saw Belafonte at the Cocoanut Grove Grove in Los Angeles -- oh it must have been in the 60s or 70s. When Belafonte finished his show, my Mom observed Belafonte walking toward the elevator, probably to go to his room in the Ambassador Hotel. What did Mom do? She chased him to the elevator! An energized performance by one of the most conscious men of this century. Harry Belafonte has been involved in humane causes most of his adult life and his music respects his people, their trials, many struggles and steel resolve never to give up such an essential fight. I have always admired and respected this gentleman for staying the course and being a classic performer,,,
Mr Belafonte is an Artist with a conscience and a if not many missions well accomplished. A great show man. At one of his concerts with my gorgeous Haitian fiancee, he stopped singing to welcome us and kindly asked the usher to seat us up front and resumed singing. In the early 90s, when I was in grad school in Eugene, Or, I had the opportunity to bid on tickets from my local NPR station to see Harry live. I won but none of my friends would go with me even though I won two tickets. I ended up going by myself but enjoying every second of it.

I heard Belafonte for the first time with his 1957 album An Evening with Belafonte when I was 7 years old. I loved it and bought many albums as they were released. I have been listening to him for 61 years. I watched TV specials and was lucky enough to see 2 live concerts in the smaller cities I lived in. I then devoured everything I could about his life. He was also an actor and producer and was committed to human and civil rights. He was a great humanitarian. The world has lost a very special person.
