Harry Edward Nilsson III (June 15, 1941 - January 15, 1994), known professionally as Nilsson, was an American singer-songwriter who achieved the peak of his commercial success in the early 1970s. His work is characterized by pioneering vocal overdub experiments, returns to the Great American Songbook, and fusions of Caribbean sounds. A tenor with a 3½ octave range, Nilsson was one of the few major pop-rock recording artists of his era to achieve significant commercial success without ever performing major public concerts or undertaking regular tours.[2] The craft of his songs and the defiant attitude he projected remains a touchstone for later generations of indie rock musicians.

My Dad loved Harry Nilsson, especially this song, he was a medic in the Vietnam war, born in 1948, he would have been 74 in 2 days. I lost him 11 years ago and I play this song and sing along as if he is right here with me. I won’t let him leave my love behind ❤️

Dear Lydia, your words touch me deeply. Your words are my own. And Soldier is correct... damn, it has been one hell of a ride. I'm going now to hear George Burns sing I Wish I Were Eighteen Again... and the tears that want to fall now... will flow. May I close with a saying from the old times... Peace. (No one uses that word that way anymore... not even me, and I use to use it all the time. We need it now... more than ever.)

Waiting for a departure date in 1970 for emigration to sunny Queensland Australia, this was the song that kept us going. Leaving dreary winter in England "going where the sun keeps shining" and where "the weather suits my clothes" was an anthem that we have never forgotten. Yes we "skipped over the ocean like a stone". After 51 years....still no regrets! Thank you Nilsson RIP

I was a teenager still trying to figure out life when this song came out. My idea of heaven will be when I can hear all the great songs like this and not have a care in the world. "I'm going where the sun keeps shining through the pouring rain." He didn't have a father around when he was growing up and he grew up poor. He became famous and then all his money got embezzled by a heartless person. I hope he's in heaven hearing us all rave about him and his songs.

In the early 70s, when my friends were buying "Tiger Beat" magazines and swooning over David Cassidy, my heart belonged to Harry. It still does! My first love (and only "true" one) reminded me a lot of Harry, and he also loved his music. "The Lottery Song" was OUR song; he was a plumber and we did save up and take that Summer trip to Vegas... and we were very happy for 8 years. Unfortunately, like Harry, Bert died way too soon. We were going to be married that year. 31 years ago, and I'm still not "over" him.

Midnight Cowboy! This song and Harry Nilsson Helped Make 'Midnight Cowboy' a Film Classic. won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, despite being controversial enough to earn an X-rating on its release May 25, 1969. It played an important role in music history, too. The only X rated movie to receive the Academy Award for best picture. Jon Voight is the iconic inexperienced, enthusiastic, country bumpkin character. This was back when his daughter, Angelina Jolie was just a sparkle in his eye, before she was born. It's really hot to see Harry Nilsson shaking it up and dancing while he's singing it here. Love this old song.

Michelle Stolz -your response got me snooping. Never heard of this day and I am a Leo. What a brilliant song. Its almost as if took on the persona of Glen Campbell when he wrote and performed this gem. It’s been way too long since I heard it and makes up for the trauma I suffered as a result of “Like A Rhinestone Cowboy.” It’s a long story but suffice to say, 8 track singles should have been banned by bus companies in the early 70’s. That’s all I have to say on that subject.

I met Harry at a Beatlefest convention. What a wonderful time it was to listen to him talk about his career and the times he spent with John. R.I.P. Harry

This is a Fred Neil song. His version, or rather the original, is even better!

Fred Neil wrote a nice song, and his voice was nothing special. It took Nilsson to make the song a classic, with his very individual timing and perfect vocals. He have it great emotional feeling, which I never felt in Fred Neil's rendering.

The difference is back then society had values. Today values are something to be torn down and trashed. What does science call this process; entropy.

It is a wonderful performance but this song was written by a folk artist named Fred Neil. He was even more of a character than Harry.
