For centuries, Eunuchs have been an important part of Indian society. But the elevated role they once held has now faded. Today they live in isolated communities, working as prostitutes and beggars. Life may be hard but inside the community, there's a real sense of warmth and camaraderie. 'Harsh Beauty' follows the lives of Jyothi, Usha and Hira Bai, three Eunuchs who struggle for acceptance in a culture splintered by religion, caste and politics. Filmed over four years and accompanied by a vibrant soundtrack, it's a warm and poignant look inside this usually hidden group.

My family lived in India for several years when I was a child. When one of my brothers was born a group of eunuchs came round to bless him (I think), in exchange for money. My parents wouldn't pay them. They threatened to say a curse on my baby brother if they were not paid. So my parents paid them to just go away. [it seemed safer to pay them than to take the chance - however small - that the curse might actually work].

I an from India and i recently read an article on how these operations are done in a magazine, i was shocked. I am not sure about the rest of the country, but from the state where i come, eunuchs have a separate welfare board and the government assists them with free medical support and sex change operation to those who r willing.

Being a female, I still thinks it's hard to live up to such a stereotype especially in cultures where such a gender is not only oppressed but shamed.

oh my God, who can be so brave and try something like that 'surgery', knowing his private part will be chopped? The feeling of these people must be so enormous, so difficult to cope with, that they really wish their body to match their feelings. They were born like that. They are innocent. I know some of them and they are all nice, creative and good friends.

Why haven't some of those whose voices are still high sought some classical training in voice. It would grant them a nice living. Interest is resurfacing in the soprano and alto male voice. Centuries ago, eunuchs called castrati were very highly prized and much music written for them which can't be sung properly anymore. The greatest of them was called Farinelli who went on to sing for a king to stave off depression.

That's the translation... The word doesn't really translate to mean simply eunuch nor does it mean gay. It refers to their particular role in the context of their society.

Awiesha - I do hear you about about the fact that the caste system is all over the world. However, not to the extreme it is used in India. Indians need to realise the value of having the majority of it's citizens being middle class, and the economic power it gives a country. While on the subjects of Eunuchs, Indians should ban this child abuse process. The rest of the world has transsexuals, who choose in adulthood to switch sex. This seems a barbaric and privative practice

how sad that their life is so hard and they feel compelled to do that which they probably would not do were things different. Once, long ago, a eunuch was quite revered for administrative duties and custodial stewardship duties as well as harem guards. In Ottoman Empire, a eunuch could be the power behind the throne, for instance.

I mean, misguided in their *actions*, as far as prostitution and things go. Sometimes, one cannot choose ones lot in life but it is better not to do those kinds of things, if you can help it. wow,,? i didnt know this kinda shit went down. I mean, i got no problem with these dudes wanting to do this, but damn, these dudes/eunuchs or girls or whatever they call themselves, are bigger men than i am. i cant imagine the pain they must go thru during this so called operation. just stand there and get ur twig and berries whacked off,, holy shit. even if i was a chick trapped in a dudes body, i wouldnt be man enough to do that. props to these people if thats what makes em happy.

Between 3:44 and 3:60 the english translation is wrong, she only mentions that she was not allowed to eat meat from male animals, not the thing about gurus and being naked at the altar...She is speaking Tamil, which I speak to...This video is obviously biased in some way.

It seems so barbaric to have to go through what they willingly allow happen to themselves , Yet for them it appears to be the most natural way.. I thin they are brave men to go through all that and still come out the other side smiling. To think that the job opportunities are so limited for them tho,.. prostitution.. here in the west we have men that change and can still have good carears , medical aid, respect of others.

Why do they call them Eunuchs? He is a transvestite. Eunuchs are neither male or female. He was born male but feels female. He would have to have born male/female organs on some level to be an Enuch. ~Raven

I don't think they remove the eurethra entirely, according to what I've read about them. They can still pee. Their bowels are released out the back end which sould not be affected by the removal of the genitals. Not all undergo castration though, only certain ones who, I understand, are revered as true eunuchs.

giingee - From what I have heard, it is not a transsexual operation. It is an operation with simply the full removal of the penis and the scrotum at a young age, done usually under non medical procedures, and usually by someone who is not medically trained. Do check out hijra on wikipedia. I find this abhorrent, as you do too. This age old tradition (also seen with eunuchs in the bible) is so wrong in a da an age of human rights. I find strange people who choose to have a transsexual operatio

Indeed, I do hope for the day Ghandi's wish of eradicating the whole caste system is finally gotten rid of. In a developed economy, when EVERYONE is able to afford to buy televisions and stuff and have buying power then it means that desperate actions such as the above do not have to be endured by the poorer segments of society. And you are right, they were treated as effective members of the community before.

I'm sorry but this is inaccurate. Paul said that men who lie with men will not inherit God's kingdom. He also made reference to people who do unnatural things with their bodies. Please do not sugarcoat what was not to be hair-split. This injunction covered pederasty, (men and boys), temple prostitues, and, consenting same sex relationships. I'm sorry if you find this harsh and unyielding but, I'm just saying what it says.

Did they choose to become eunuchs? I always thought that it was something their families choose for them & that they had the operation before reaching pubity. I doubt they do it so as to not have children. They do it (at least traditionally, they did it) for religious reasons. There is a special role (or there used to be) for eunuchs in religious ceremonies etc in Indian society. Eunuchs used to be well respected.

Thx, i wish such social ills disappear soon but not until the government give them proper protection (remember here we have everything well written in paper but not executed effectively). In ancient period eunuchs enjoyed a decent life and were considered sacred(I may b wrong again).

It is just that many of these hirjas do not make a choice to have this committed on them or are too young to be able to fully consider the consequences of such a change. These people may have had a place as sexless servants to rich monarchies in byegone days. But these days they just end up living under tremendously hard circumstances. India is an emerging economy, once there is a huge middle class population such social ills will be gotten rid of.

@sarahmonki any variation in thought that doesn't cause pain for others is a good way to EVOLVE as humans more caring and accepting. This care and acceptance facilitates growth, technology, medicine, new philosophies. Its much more efficient and easy to gain these new insights when we accept one anothers differences and not discriminate. The very fact that you say you don't think homosexuality is wrong but its unnatural is subjective and teeters on wrong, its here its natural, and God made it.

Well, a eunuch is any man who has his genitles removed. They were often used in harems to take care of the concubines or they were castrated for religious reasons. Sometimes the word eunuch refers to any man who abstains from sex or a homosexual, as it is used here. Some use the homosexual definition of eunuch as evidence of Jesus's approval of homosexuality when he refers to "eunuchs of the womb" in the Gospel of Matthew.

Because something is different to you doesnt make it wrong, but surely you knew that, i hope. So your points countered. You on the other hand have just called my observation of true evolution "emotional trickery", why? If in fact my point makes sense you fall outside of those who are accepting and therefore your not contributing to higher thought.

I don't doubt that it can be found in Leviticus. Paul quoted frequently from the Torah. The scripture I was refering to, though was 2nd Corinthians 5:9 or thereabouts. The purpose of my comment was to state what the Bible said. I am not going to get into the natural or unnatural argument here. I do, of course, have my own very strong opinion on the matter but I shall keep it to myself.

Opinions on the standards of evolution are subjective, even when they appear to be based on scientific fact consider the bias of your argument, i could say that a better evolved human for efficiency and learning's sake, is one who practices acceptance and compassion, therefore differences amongst us should be celebrated.
