Because a lot of services the councils provide cannot be monetized by private companies. Also given the state of rivers and reservoirs in England, that are the responsibility of private firms, I'm not convinced private enterprise is the answer for everything.

The Glasgow clean air zone is one of the most ridiculous ideas ever. I'm all for clean air but trying to make a "clean air zone" quite literaly right next to the buisiest motorway in Scotland is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen.
Just for clarity TLA, the reason Glasgow district council has had to raise the council tax was due to the illegal equal pay awards that the previous Labour run council were responsible for, the then Labour run council denied equal pay to women & then had the audacity to fight it in court, which they lost & had run up a legal bill of over £2.5 million.

Indeed there are certain English categories of persons when they hear the fine glaswegian accent spoken to them in it's traditional form they will internalise even though you never touched them they can get a feeling you assaulted and attacked them just frim hearing the Scottish sound of your voice. I know this as a Scottish person having lived in England for some time 😮
Also to add, council tax hasn't went up in Scotland, it's frozen till 2025. The small rise on the council tax bill is to the water bill part of it. It's went up aprox 70p a week. Still FAR lower rates than anywhere in England for water, plus we dont dump raw sewage in the rivers.
That doesn't mean Council services will stay the same - if anything they will decline as Councils have to cut costs. I 11:45 t's not really a cause for celebration. I know what I'm talking about as I worked in a Scottish Council. It's actually a cheap stunt and cynical attempt by the failing SNP up here to try and retain and gain votes.
