Featuring Tony Hart and Joanna Kirk.
Part 1: • Hartbeat - Light (1 of 3)
Part 2: • Hartbeat - Light (2 of 3)
Part 3: • Hartbeat - Light (3 of 3)
Tony looks at various transparent and translucent materials, including glass, cel, tissue paper, water-worn glass and a wine gum. He draws a snail on a small sheet of cel, using thin and thick marker pens. He then uses his transparent and translucent materials to create a picture on a light box.
Joanna looks at a photo of the Trifid Nebula for inspiration, and then makes a very large painting of the planets, using spray paint, water-based paint and pot scourers.
Tony plays some animated computer graphics, which were created using MacPaint on an Apple Macintosh 128K computer.
Tony makes a simple pencil drawing of a church on a hilltop. He then adds shadows, making the drawing appear much more solid.
Finally, Tony experiments lighting up Joanna's face from different angles with a torch, and then uses the torch to write the word "bye" in the air.

This is how I fell in love with “Art of Noise” and how I became an artist. Thank you Tony Hart and RIP.

Great show for it's time, this was stuff you could not do in school art lessons, Tony Hart was an amazing man.

I was lucky enough to have an art teacher somewhat like him. Eccentric and multi talented. He happened to be our class tutor too, so we saw him daily and had tutorial classes on top of the normal art lessons so we were lucky enough to spend more time with him than the other pupils. He was really creative, a little bonkers and very laid back. Used to let me hide in the kiln room instead of going to boring assemblies lol.

I sent one of my pictures into The Gallery. I was heartbroken when it wasn’t used.

I’d guess they just binned them all ? Imagine the hours just thrown away. Life was much simpler then. Patience was in abundance. Now it’s all at the flick of a thumb in a smartphone. This really was relaxing to watch. Hard luck on the gallery. What was your drawing of ? At least that way we’ll all know without ever seeing it.......

@@MrSmid888 it was a pencil drawing of Roman soldiers.

@@concerned1 Ah very good. I remember sending things into Blue Peter. I live in Scotland now but schooled in Doncaster. I remember doing history on the Romans and drawing them. My father was a metal detectorist, I’ve held many a Roman coin back in the 80’s. 🙂Cheers

At 0.03 a VHS video recorder, God I remember them I loved having my own video recorder. It felt great to be able to tape programmes off tv. We are all so used to Sky+ and Virgin Tivo that we forget the old vhs. I love nostalgia.

I guess in 2021 art programmes on CBBC they would not dare draw a church, in case of insulting other faiths.

I noticed tony made a point of not saying 'grave' stone, a little bit of early political correctness creeping in?...loved the show, never got to meet tony, he was a hero of mine, but did end up making a couple of animations for the show and getting invited to a christmas party!
