Fellow med student here, so glad I saw this. But I kept on thinking, wow, he actually went there. Bravo for the confidence. I saw some of the professors at the back squirming with discomfort. But you gave everyone a reality check. Thank you for being our voice!
It's funny, this guy graduating from Harvard Medical School, having such a voice and platform just as an American citizen, talking about being oppressed because police officers decided to stop him and then let him go, which they have the right to for anyone, many of whom are wrong calls but understand the police officers are within their rights, and then you have Jonny Kim, someone humble who has been through literal Hell on Earth, with a father that tried to murder him, and has seen kids blown up or shot to death every few days, and Iraqi children and civilian raped and murdered, walk up, grateful for everything he is able to do in America to help others, despite being gravely misperceived far more harsh and misunderstanding individuals, but earned extreme respect by simply communicating and showing people the extraordinary person he really is, throughout his careers. How spoiled this kid is. If someone has a misperception of a person based on the color of their skin, then show them who you are and what people of your background and all backgrounds are capable of, instead of whining about it in a commencement speech.
