Harvard Professor Roland Fryer’s Study on Fatal Police Shootings Yielded an Unpopular Conclusion

Roland Fryer’s study on lethal use of force shootings, found no evidence of racial bias whatsoever. While some argue that disproportionate representation of Black individuals around police shooting victims indicates discrimination, this oversimplification neglects fundamental statistical principles. Fryer’s findings challenge these assumptions, highlighting the complexity of racial dynamics in policing and emphasizing the importance of nuanced analysis over superficial conclusions.

It would be interesting for the non-lethal interactions with police if the behaviour of the suspects could be categorised (e.g. threatening or non-cooperative behaviour, insults, general rudeness etc), and if there would then still be the 50% difference in likelihood of force being used for blacks vs other ethnicities. I suspect there would be little difference found, but the stats would be interesting. None of this changes the fact that police behaviour is often unnecessarily heavy handed of course, and I personally am no fan of the police in general.

@@johnfranklin1367 well when you’re subject to a witch hunt bc of your politics even though you’ve been a NY lib your whole life…….I wouldn’t fault anyone for having a current dislike over certain law enforcement agencies. His issue is with the top brass, but this professor didn’t give a reason, so what’s his beef? I’ll assume bc he’s a Harvard professor and he knows better.

Politeness is a symptom of nervousness. It’s a defence mechanism to show you aren’t a threat. You shouldn’t be a threat, but you don’t talk like the cop’s a buddy, you act as if upsetting them matters which it shouldn’t, but officers have discretion and you being polite mimics remorse and obedience. Running, arguing, or resisting looks like confident defiance. Defying individuals is anti-cooperative. Cooperative means helping, and police’s job is (allegedly) keeping the streets safe. Help with that by being polite and they’ll let you on your merry way

The issues for me are: 1. Do police get punished when they murder someone? 2. Do police receive special treatment under the law versus someone who isn't a cop? The answers for those are: 1. No 2. Yes. They are held to a different standard. That's part of the reason why the answer to #1 is no. And the fact that black people's rights are more likely to have their rights violated is nothing to ignore.

@countysecession: Great post! Thanks for not avoiding the easy questions that most people never bother to ask and almost never answer honestly. @@FlyingSpaghettiMonsterZealot One or two people may have been jailed for the thousands of lynchings which were committed in the US if that. Does that prove that the justice system worked? The vast majority of cops are NOT held accountable for any extreme of behavior or criminality when black people are the target or the victims. In many cases the ONLY reason why anything was done at all has been due to unusual amounts of sustained agitation and public unrest which embarrassed those who claim to run a justice system. That hasn't changed one iota since the 1960s. It's just been normalized.

I'd have to dig deeper into the scenarios that his study reported on. At first listen, I have a hard time believing it. I've looked at other studies with similar claims and they had only accounted for very specific scenarios. Here's what we can see anecdotally with our own eyes that shows bias: we've witnessed white shooters get arrested unscathed in many instances. We've seen some cases where the perp actually begs/demands the the police shoot them but they walk away unharmed. Juxtapose that with the amount of unarmed black men (or possibly armed, but fleeing and not presenting an active threat) that are shot and killed. It seems totally one sided. Research I've looked at before may take into account that the suspect is armed, but doesn't take into account the behavior of the suspect. This is where I assume his study breaks down and this is where the disparity in treatment lies. There just isn't a way to capture that data, but anecdotally we all see it. There is no white George Floyd or Tamir Rice, etc.
@dennisconway1703

Out of your league here. Statistically a police officer is way more likely to be shot by a black person than an unarmed black person is to be killed by a police officer. Also statistically black subjects resist officers more often than white subjects. It’s culture, not race.

@S5King7
@S5King7 5 месяцев назад
@PlayafromtheHimalayas yes I agree. And like in your example, I think some of the bias with policing is due to the perception of a larger threat. Problem is sometimes they get it drastically wrong and kill someone that was no threat, sometimes they've even shot someone who is a victim or helping stop the perpetrator. These mistakes are more likely to happen to minorities.
